Checkered flag.

As a NASCAR fan (and someone who would most likely vote for Obama without a viable 3rd party)... I'm rather surprised.  Many fans of NASCAR are not uneducated hicks from the south... but its still a large portion of the fanbase unfortunately (judging by how many confederate flags I see during tailgating.)

What!?

Some of Romney's best friends own NASCAR teams, he is certainly better able to empathize with the NASCAR fan base.

Nothing NASCAR fans enjoy more than a spectacular wreck.

Obama should seize the opportunity and make a surprise visit to Dover this weekend. The track's not too far from Dover AFB, so the logistics should be pretty easy.

I gotta say, if this isn't at least nominated for HOTY, then there's no point to the contest.

romney did go out of his way to mock nascar fans on several occasions so it shouldn't be that shocking they didn't take kindly to it

2012-09-24 02:04:50 PM
NASCAR fans, though, have been known to boo politicians.

Things they've also been known to boo:

Reading
Hygiene
Exercise
...

Soooo....NASCAR fans are a new demographic for judging how an election will sway? Jeebus, this is the end, isn't it.

The crowd initially booed Mr. Romney, who occasionally struck a discordant note, as when he approached a group of fans wearing plastic ponchos. "I like those fancy raincoats you bought," he said. "Really sprung for the big bucks."

If Romney weren't Mormon he would greet people with "hey, f*cko".

Yeah, yeah, the novelty of NASCAR fans preferring Obama and the hilarious Romney quote are nice. But the only thing I took away from the article is that NASCAR fans sure like to boo politicians.

Yeah, I know politicians aren't exactly the popular group of people in the world, but most sports crowds (emphasis on "most," Philly fans) are content to give polite applause or sit on their hands. The fact that NASCAR people love to boo politicians of all stripes--and the wives of said politicians--tells me they're the kind of people who blame their miserable lives on the mean ol' government despite not having the foggiest idea how the government works nor the introspection to think that maybe something they did cause it to all go wrong.

They're the type of people who spit invective toward the government in one breath and then demand it help them find a job and make beer cheaper in the next. It's one of the worst parts of election year culture. Not looking forward to seeing it come town hall time.

I might have to sit this one out. The only thing I dislike more than Romney is NASCAR, and I feel it would create a great disturbance in The Force to associate, even if ever so tenuously, with those cousin-banging hicks.

Wow, yes, the tried and true Philly fans meme. As long as Sportscenter reports it, you don't have to think about it.

But we already know they're predominantly republicans...

Maybe NASCAR is attracting more new fans who are Democrats, rather than Obama attracting more new supporters who like NASCAR.

Not all rednecks are as Obama hating as you might be led to believe by the extremely vocal nature of the more racist elements of that crowd. At the end of the day, redneck culture is pretty relaxed, and many really do just want someone who they don't feel like will screw them over, race be damned.

Obama has a head start of 14 points among independents (46 to 32 percent)

Christ... I've seen this stated exactly the opposite recently.

Too many polls.

2012-09-24 02:11:59 PM
among those sympathetic to the tea party, Romney holds a 75 to 17 percent edge

So even the republican base has 17 percent going for Obama...

WTF? If this guy only has 3/4 of the tea party vote, he's totally farked. That's like Netanyahu having 17% of the Iranian vote.

Well, to be fair.... it's not like that 1/4 are out voting for Obama. You and I both know they write in for RON PAUL and cry themselves to sleep on their end the fed bed set.

Oh god. The delusion among Republicans that are forced to carry water for Romney is scary.

2012-09-24 02:16:30 PM
I'm sure some idiot will start an unfounded rumor to try and fix this. "Obama wants to ban our racing cars cuz pollution and the viroment"

2012-09-24 02:17:04 PM
From TFA, it looks like someone found the difference between a random sample (assuming the Zogby poll was actually random) and a self-selected sample (those who attend NASCAR events).

If you don't live within an hour of a NASCAR track, you're not likely to get to a race (and even if you do live close, maybe one or two a year?). NASCAR fans live all over the country (we assume). So the next step to determining how good NASCAR fans' support is at predicting general support of Obama would be overlaying the nationwide maps of Obama/NASCAR supporters.

Statistics is hard, brah. Let's just dash off a writeup comparing apples to oranges instead and go get a beer.

It's kind of ironic, NASCAR events in Northern California are held at Sear's Point raceway which is SMACK DAB in the middle of wine country surrounded by some of the most posh snobs on the planet. Now THERE'S a demographic cross-over I'd love to see.

The next group of people that should consider getting insulted by Romney in a daily basis are all government employees.
And I hear there are quite a few of them.
