I've watched Modern Family and it's certainly funny at times, the writing and acting is pretty good, but something annoys me about the show. I don't know what. It's kind of bland.

Why does it seem like all the comedies that have (thankfully) abandoned the laugh track also adopted the shaky cam?

The no laugh track is a byproduct of the current trend of moving sitcoms from multi-camera to single-camera. No reason they can't stick it on a Steadicam though. I think they're trying to be a pseudo mockocumentary (fake-fake-documentary?).

Probably. But it doesn't make it any more "real" to me.

Homeland winning all those awards is the most sense the Emmys have made in a long, long time. I hope they can maintain into a second season without the bounds of credulity being too strained.

This. That's been so played out though. The Office did it. Arrested Development did it. And the latter to me is darker, edgier, and funnier. I dunno, Modern Family feels like a bunch of TV execs sitting down and using focus group and statistical findings to create the "perfect" contemporary comedy. It's funny, but like a robot wrote it.

The only thing that's not so credible to me on that show is

*SPOILER ALERT*

that that government would feel the need to cover up a drone attack on civilians. That already happens and most Americans applaud it.

Eh, I tried watching Modern Family a few times but it isn't for me. Actually I think Seinfeld was the last sitcom I actually watched unless you count 30 Rock and I've grown weary of that too. But the crappy sitcoms and relentless reality TV is balanced with some really good hour long dramas, mostly on cable. Mostly.

Lumpmoose: I think they're trying to be a pseudo mockocumentary (fake-fake-documentary?).

Hence the interviews. You're meant to feel you're peeking in on their real lives as opposed to three-camera(Big Bang, HIMYMother) which is shot like a stage play. The last funny three-camera show I remember was Frasier.

I agree - I've watched Modern Family a couple of times, and I always think that I should love it, because it seems to have been designed for me, but it never keeps my attention for a full episode. Louie and Archer are the only shows that are really making me laugh lately.

I'm in the same boat. It has solid writing but I could never quite pinpoint why I never got into the show. But I would agree with this. On the bright side, it probably keeps Big Bang Theory from getting all the awards.

Modern Family reminds me of Frasier, except Frasier was more star driven while Modern Family is ensemble driven. Frasier was more ghey though.

I've never thought about it from that angle, but you're exactly right. I always thought it was annoying because the girl who plays Lily aged five years in one season, and the baby was actually a much better actress. The other child actors are all above average. She's awful. They should just animate the character if they can't find someone to play it. It would be less distracting.

I am a huge fan of Mitchell & Webb in all their incarnations... except Peep Show. I've watched a couple eps in hopes that it would grow on me, but it just didn't. Maybe it's because they don't write it. Should I give it another chance?

Oh, and kudos for Timothy van Patten for getting Best Director in a Drama. Apparently he's overcome his mushmouthed jibberish that he displayed so formidably in MST3K's "Master Ninja I" and "Master Ninja II", and now his cast and crew can understand him enough to take direction. If they say it sucks from the beginning, sure. You've been around alot longer then me so you know that the way things go on fark follows a pattern.

1. New thing loved to death by a few. No negative comments.
2. Still pretty new thing gets loved to death by many. Still no negative comments.
3. Not as new thing that has lost none of its quality suddenly has people who magically appear to mention they never liked it anyway.
4. Not new, has lost some quality thing is now hated on a 50/50 basis in all threads.
5. Thing goes 1 season too long and even defenders are ready to see it go. Haters act like they have said this from the beginning.

Ditto. 10 episodes in. Moves very slowly and the plot is very linear. Clare Danes is an excellent actress, and while the show is decent, it is not living up to its hype for me. It is two leagues away from a show like Game of Thrones and The Wire.

As the father of a girl that just turned 15 I can safely say you need to get your eyes recalibrated for age discrimination. 14 year olds look like that. 15 year girls are fully grown, physically. Hell, I took my son to a middle school orientation in August and saw some 13 year olds that looked like that. Casting directors in Hollywood must have some rule that says that teens need to be short so we can't confuse them with adults. But teenage girls in reality are generally as tall or taller than their mothers, from my experience. Not 6 inches shorter like the two on Modern Family.

The Banana Thug: imgod2u: I watched the first 2 episodes of Homeland. Perhaps I need to watch more but it did not seem to be in the same league as Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad.

Ditto. 10 episodes in. Moves very slowly and the plot is very linear. Clare Danes is an excellent actress, and while the show is decent, it is not living up to its hype for me. It is two leagues away from a show like Game of Thrones and The Wire.

I feel the same way. It's Good, but not Great. I think both Breaking Bad and Mad Men were better shows this year.

Funniest show on TV. Finally coming back this fall.

I am a huge fan of Mitchell & Webb in all their incarnations... except Peep Show. I've watched a couple eps in hopes that it would grow on me, but it just didn't. Maybe it's because they don't write it. Should I give it another chance?

I love Peep Show; I think you should give it another chance. Some of the episodes are better than others, so you have to wade through some "meh" shows to get to the really good ones. My favorites are "University Challenge" from Series 2 and "Seasonal Beatings" from Series 7. Dobby (Mark's sometimes love interest) is one of my favorite characters on television.

coco ebert: I've watched Modern Family and it's certainly funny at times, the writing and acting is pretty good, but something annoys me about the show. I don't know what. It's kind of bland.

Is it the Colombian woman's loud mouth and grating voice? She makes Fran Dresher sound soothing. It's the reason I can't watch that show. It's hilarious but she makes me stabby.

A top 5 of all time for me! I didn't know they were still making episodes. Awesome!

Fair enough; another chance I shall give it. Thanks for the advice.

She's got the whole "ayyy look at me I'm such a spicy, sexy, spitfire Latina woman!!" Charo thing going on. It's farking annoying and terribly stereotypical.

After the Late Show episodes, I am convinced Louie is the best show on television.

Nick Spiceyweiner: demonfaerie: Why is it when something wins an award, people on Fark has to hate it? People are hating on Modern Family, and Louis CK for winning Emmys. I didn't know Fark is where internet Hipsters go to judge.

Are you new here? If its not Breaking Bad, which is not very good in my opinion, the Fark hive mind will strike it down.

Yes, we're all quite bitter that Breaking Bad wasn't able to win the Best Comedy Emmy.

Your attempt at snark was bad and you should feel bad.

It didn't prove anything except that the ones responsible for awarding the Emmys don't know what the frak they're doing. It ruined the prestige with Mad Men and Breaking Bad both getting screwed over.

Here's how it goes in terms of "award accuracy," as in, the award actually goes to the best candidate. Note that no awards show gets it right more than 60% of the time or so.

1: Baseball awards (MVP, Cy Young, etc)
2: Basketball awards
3: Hockey awards
4: Football awards
5: Oscars
6: Drama Emmy
19: Comedy Emmy
1,392: Grammy

1. Notice I didn't say best comedy, but rather best show. The best moments of Louie depend on his view of the world, his sensibility, not his humor.

2. Boring? OK, that's a subjective call. Same crap over and over? You're nuts. Where have you seen crap like this before?

It's a show where the kids are kids and parents are parents, unlike the usual TV dads who are idiots and kids who are a cross between Oscar Wilde and Groucho Marx (like Modern Family).

How many shows on television have characters who are actually affected by the choices they make?

You don't like the show, that's just like your opinion, man. But if you claim it's the same crap you've seen before, I'd like to know where.

I'm still not over macy Gray winning Best New Artist over Susan Tedeschi, and that was 15 years ago

Jim from Saint Paul: Sorry Subby, Modern Family has been on for more then 2 years and that is how long it can last before Fark beings to post tons of "Wait it's popular now? Screw this. The show is now bland and stupid" posts.

Why yes, Fark has our version of hipsters. Ours are fatter and uglier then your typical hipster of course.

/show is god damned hilarious (IMHO of course)

How old were you when Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley were the biggest sitcoms on TV? I was a teen and I thought those shows were the worst formulaic crap ever. Maybe they were, and maybe I was just going through my own hipster phase.

As long as Breaking Bad eventually wins, I will be happy. I actually watched every show nominated this year and they are all excellent. I have no problem with Homeland winning. I do feel bad for Jon Hamm, but damn that field is loaded.

There was no need to nominate so many Modern Family supporting actors.

Hey man, there's no way to tell based on that pic that she's 14. *You just don't do anything about it*. But thinking that's hot, no jury can convict you of that.
