What's television?

I'm pretty sure Homeland is.

I've watched Modern Family and it's certainly funny at times, the writing and acting is pretty good, but something annoys me about the show. I don't know what. It's kind of bland.

It strikes me as one of those shows that thinks it's edgy but is really very safe.

Why does it seem like all the comedies that have (thankfully) abandoned the laugh track also adopted the shaky cam?

The no laugh track is a byproduct of the current trend of moving sitcoms from multi-camera to single-camera. No reason they can't stick it on a Steadicam though. I think they're trying to be a pseudo mockocumentary (fake-fake-documentary?).

Probably. But it doesn't make it any more "real" to me.

Homeland winning all those awards is the most sense the Emmys have made in a long, long time. I hope they can maintain into a second season without the bounds of credulity being too strained.

This. That's been so played out though. The Office did it. Arrested Development did it. And the latter to me is darker, edgier, and funnier. I dunno, Modern Family feels like a bunch of TV execs sitting down and using focus group and statistical findings to create the "perfect" contemporary comedy. It's funny, but like a robot wrote it.

The only thing that's not so credible to me on that show is

*SPOILER ALERT*

that that government would feel the need to cover up a drone attack on civilians. That already happens and most Americans applaud it.

Eh, I tried watching Modern Family a few times but it isn't for me. Actually I think Seinfeld was the last sitcom I actually watched unless you count 30 Rock and I've grown weary of that too. But the crappy sitcoms and relentless reality TV is balanced with some really good hour long dramas, mostly on cable. Mostly.

Lumpmoose: I think they're trying to be a pseudo mockocumentary (fake-fake-documentary?).

Hence the interviews. You're meant to feel you're peeking in on their real lives as opposed to three-camera(Big Bang, HIMYMother) which is shot like a stage play. The last funny three-camera show I remember was Frasier.

I agree - I've watched Modern Family a couple of times, and I always think that I should love it, because it seems to have been designed for me, but it never keeps my attention for a full episode. Louie and Archer are the only shows that are really making me laugh lately.

Me: [Andrew "Dice" Clay] Grammys. Emmys. What's the f*ckin' difference? [/Andrew "Dice" Clay]

The thing I can't figure out is how the Daily Show, which is getting weaker by the year in terms of writing and the increasingly awful correspondents, keeps winning over Colbert Report.

I don't know enough about 14 year olds on television to dispute this claim, but given the photographic evidence you have provided I'm going to put myself in the category of 'highly skeptical' as to the validity of your statement.

Also, would you mind taking a seat over there...

I'm in the same boat. It has solid writing but I could never quite pinpoint why I never got into the show. But I would agree with this. On the bright side, it probably keeps Big Bang Theory from getting all the awards.

If Sarah Hyland could play a guitar, she'd be a good candidate for another Joan Jett biopic.

Ha! I was about to write more in my comment that Big Bang Theory is like that for me as well, except a three-camera set up with an laughtrack. It's like robots wrote the quintessential sitcom for nerds.

No, really, I completely agree with everything you said. It seems to me like they try too hard to be edgy and cute or something.  Whatever it is, I get no kicks out of that show. And the shaky-cam sucks too.

Good to see that Breaking Bad was almost shut out - it is a horrible show with over acting and beyond belief plots that make it seem more like a parody.

The guy who played the whiny Jesse didn't deserve to win but it was probably a sympathy vote.

I liked the first season of "Louie", but the second season kind of sucks. It's turned into a pretentious half-hour drama.

And Louis C.K.'s stand-up sucks. The bits on the show are good, but I can't make it through even 10 minutes of his stand-up specials.

Sorry Subby, Modern Family has been on for more then 2 years and that is how long it can last before Fark beings to post tons of "Wait it's popular now? Screw this. The show is now bland and stupid" posts.

/show is god damned hilarious (IMHO of course)

Modern Family reminds me of Frasier, except Frasier was more star driven while Modern Family is ensemble driven. Put a bunch of wealthy, attractive people in a nice setting, throw in some wacky "Three's Company" misunderstandings, and watch the family go to wacky hijinks in order to fix/avoid/deceive the mark.

Frasier was more ghey though.
