I'll just repost what I wrote previously on this:

"There is the legacy of slavery and Jim Crow laws. We don't owe the homeless. We don't owe feminists. We don't owe women who are desirous of having abortions or gays who want to get married to one another. That's what civil rights has become for much of the left."

"Immigrant rights are not civil rights?" Stephanopoulos asked.

"No," Coulter responded, "No. I think civil rights are for blacks.

I think, I hope, what she was trying to say is that the only time the term 'civil rights' applies is to black people; for immigrants rights it's a different term, feminist rights another different term, and so on. It's incredibly stupid, pointless, idiotic, dividing and just plain retarded, but I think that's the point she was trying for, which isn't quite as bad. Why that matters, I have absolutely no idea. Why a right can only be civil when applied to black people, I have no idea. The only thing I can think of is to say something that stupid so the press all focuses on her and not on Romney so he can catch his breath.

To reach that conclusion, however, you have to be utterly tone deaf to a point that even I know she isn't. She's either being honest that immigrants don't deserve rights, or she's being intentionally inflammatory to draw fire to her instead of to Romney.

Civil rights refer to rights of citizens, so immigration, arguably, technically, is a separate issue from civil rights. Whether she knowingly made that distinction or not is not going to stop her from getting pilloried.

So if you never owned them, you don't owe them. Gotcha, Ann.

The best response to Ann Coulter was by George Carlin when they were booked together on (I think) the Tonight Show. It was an obvious attempt to create fireworks between the too, but after making a joke about his seating position ("This is the first time I've ever been to the right of Ann Coulter") he ignored her for the rest of the segment. She was so unnerved that every time she made an inflammatory remark she would instinctively look at Carlin waiting for the snarky reply that never came.

...which could give the pro-business and "conservative" folks time to establish a new political party and let the right-wing nuts go their own way.

"Immigrants haven't even been in this country."

That's kind of why they're immigrants. Now that they're here, do they have rights? I kinda always thought that our conception of rights also served as a blueprint for how we ought to treat other human beings. Maybe I just didn't throw enough salt on my book during civics class.

But who am I to disagree with the transexual troll?

You guys don't understand what she's saying.
She's saying that ONLY black people get civil rights. So, like, black people can get gay married. Black people can vote. Black women can have equal pay with men for equal work.

The right to not be treated like a criminal just for being Hispanic, for one.

The right to travel freely within the country without being accosted and asked for papers by government officials, for another (excluding being asked for a driver's license while driving, but INCLUDING being asked for a driver's license while riding in a car as a passenger, while walking, or at any other time while doing anything at all other than operating a motor vehicle on a public road).

I hear the term "civil rights" applied to gay rights and women's rights all the time. I think this is a shallow and ultimately futile semantic point that can easily be remedied by starting to frame things like the Dream Act as civil rights.

To say otherwise smacks of apologism, and I'm surprised to hear it from you GAT.

Civil and political rights are a class of rights based upon birthright into a polity or designation otherwise of human rights.

Civil and political rights need not be codified to be protected, although most democracies worldwide do have formal written guarantees of civil and political rights. Civil rights are often considered to be natural rights. Thomas Jefferson wrote in his 1774 A Summary View of the Rights of British America that "a free people [claim] their rights as derived from the laws of nature, and not as the gift of their chief magistrate."

Hmm. So, why most would probably agree that civil rights are natural human rights (inborn, universal), I guess you COULD argue that if you aren't born in to a state, you shouldn't be granted rights.

If you're a huge douchetard, I mean.

But either way, the idea that civil rights are some kind of payback for past abuses is farking moronic.

We didn't "give" blacks their civil rights as some kind of reparation for denying them before. We just stopped denying them.

Really, the underlying premise of hers argument is that white people grant rights to non-whites. Farking sickening.

Ann Coulter is a Fox Spinner as all the so called experts or reporters are that work for the main feeder. Ted Koppel is correct in that the management of Fox News has turned News into a business of making money by creating polarization through propaganda and has Fox has forgotten what "real" news reporting is like.

The only issue I have with civil rights is not the concept itself but the way groups that aren't particularly oppressed grab the label to try to achieve legitimacy in the public forum. They're contorting the original noble concept into something self-centered.
For example, if I hear anyone else from the Chik-fil-A crowd whine about their right to patronize whatever fast food company they want and how the lib'rul media is criticizing that, I will barf up my Ben & Jerry's gay flavor of the month ice cream.

I think the point she's trying to make is that the political pandering is shifting and she's using an outlandish point that will cause headlines to make the previous point get mentioned in articles.

Unfortunately, as per usual, she's overboard in her sensationalism, so you're left focusing solely on the idiotic comment rather than the spotlight she is placing on political pandering.

And just think, we're the real problem by paying attention to, and trying to reduce the influence of, unchecked and unwarranted voices of hate speech. If we just let people like this talk as much as they wanted and express themselves constantly to the people out there that agree with her and will feed her with attention, she'd just go away and never have any influence at all on global politics at all.
