So I have a family plan with 5 phones, 2 are eligible for an upgrade through Sprint. The lines are for my mother and grandmother who just have basic phones and do nothing more than make calls on it. Looks like I'm going down to the Sprint store tomorrow and upgrade both lines to iPhone 5's, pay the upgrade price, change the lines back to the old phones and sell the iPhones for a nice profit.

Apparently you live in some bizarro fantasy world where everybody gets offered exactly the perfect job for them and they live happily ever after. Remember the "horrible Obama economy" you conservative types keep ranting about? You can't just pass up on, or quit, your job because you're not happy. Even when unemployment is only "kinda bad" there's plenty of job seekers such that they don't have to settle for someone who won't shut up and do what they're told.

You also apparently missed the part of the article where a previous disturbance was caused by the factory promising raises and then backing out.

Anyway, I thought we covered this point before: Mitt is not going to be your BFF, so you don't have to defend him and those like him.

Because for the most part phones are designed and built around a slightly-longer-than-2-years obsollescence plan, and battery life and some critical function on most phones goes to shiat (buttons wear out, break, can't replace, etc.) before/after this point, depending on usage, and the vast, vast, majority of the world does not do pay as you go phone service, which means they're going to be bound in contract anyway, so might as well be using the upgrade when it's available.

Especially since he's overtly mentioned that he's on a family plan, those are complicated.

I'm sure you either 'don't use a cell phone because people can get ahold of me X, Y, Z way' or use a '1834 brick phone that has 3 colors and doubles as a trenching tool in case of nazi invasion'.

Doubleposting myself I think.

I've been debating getting an iphone 5 (I have an over 2 years old 4 that is showing its age in battery life, and I suspect the cellular data antenna/connection is dieing).

Is the jump from 4 to 4s worth mentioning?

Since it's, I think, 100$ for the upgrade to a 4s, and the iphone 5 is 200$, wasn't sure which one would be a better deal. I'm renewing my contract either way, and would like to get a new phone because, well, mine's starting to show its age poorly. Had the speaker bit (that transmits MY voice out, so speaker or transciever or reciever however you prefer) bug out for a few hours one day while I was troubleshooting stuff on the phone. I was not happy.

Whatever you do, gamestop will pay $100+ cash for your iPhone 4. Ta Da, price difference between 4s and 5 doesn't matter.

Why upgrade? Are your phones broken? Or do you just need to have that shiny new gadget?

He's not upgrading.

BullBearMS: We should all use Samsung products instead!

"Serious legal violations and labor abuses" have been found at Samsung factories, according to a U.S.-based labor group.

Among the abuses found by China Labor Watch (CLW) at the factories were staff being "forced" to work 100 hours of overtime a month, unpaid hours and unsafe conditions.

The report says that workers at the eight factories also have to endure "standing for 11 to 12 hours while working, underage workers, severe age and gender discrimination, abuse of student and labor dispatch workers, a lack of worker safety, and verbal and physical abuse."

Apple should try beating the workers until morale improves like Samsung does!

Chinese workers are demanding the working conditions, wages, and unions that American workers gave up to help the Job Creator save their jobs only to have them shipped overseas anyway. There was an story ran on this a few weeks ago on Chinese college students being forced to work at Foxconn to help them meet quota for the I-phone5.

This

The fastest version of NFC sends data at less than one eleventh of the speed of the slowest version of WiFi.

Free apps like Bump have been around and allowing you to transfer photos, music, etc. for years now without NFC's ridiculously slow speeds.

I understand the field of pedantic twatery is a good career to get into, but you seem to be really bad at it. Have a look at the largest technology companies in the world and compare the short list of names from above. So when all of those names come up, realize more are probably on there as well because it's a short list and not a complete list.

Foxconn is a monolithic manufacturer that, until a couple years ago, nobody heard of. They run the gamut from assembling computers and phones down to manufacturing piddly cables and connectors. If you have something in your home with a semi-conductor, odds are Foxconn had some part in its construction.

digistil:

Because 4G and WIFI don't require you to smack their phone with yours and don't open the doors for someone with a virus-infected phone to easily transfer that same security risk to yours. Looking at that Samsung ad, they take their phones and tap them together. Given the S3's proclivity to crack this seems like a bad idea.

Also note that all this talk about NFC (e.g. iPhone doesn't even have NFC, what losers!) seldom brings up the security flaws inherent to Android's distribution model. All the Samsung, HTC and Moto rebadgers of the Android system add their bloatware and, for many, this is done poorly with loads of security holes. People willing to give Google Wallet access to their bank or credit accounts are taking a massive risk as most users aren't aware of these flaws, much like the "Macs won't get viruses" people, they are unaware that the classic computer virus is not the preferred mode for gaining access and or control of your computer any more. Malicious code, executed on a web page is far more effective as is using malicious code buried in the little app you downloaded from the "open" Android market.

Apple should take some of their spare billions that are just sitting there and set up a second assembly line in the US, pay the workers a good wage, and charge more for those phones. Actually corporate security is pretty tight at secure facilities like Texas instruments. They just have millions in RFID tech and CC and other non-human methods of keeping an even tighter lockdown on employees, while china has too many people and not enough for them to do, ergo guard towers and human guards.

The problem is, the iPhone isn't made using one factory in China. All of the components are made in China, then they are shipped to the Foxconn factory to be assembled. Now, it's likely that Foxconn also manufactures alot of those parts as well. But each one has a specific department with tooling to manufacture that one piece, over and over. It would cost billions, and likely take years to get setup. I'm pretty sure at this point, Apple's stance on this and on the shortage is "lol, whatever, you'll still buy them even if we made horrid child labor part of our advertising campaign FOR the new iPhones. Why spend the money on a new factory to increase cost-of-goods, when we can just keep doing what we're doing and you'll buy it anyway?"

Not sure if you're trolling, but I actually would. While there are cases where it's nearly impossible to buy conscientiously, I do so as much as I can.

I will cheerfully pay for the better gear. Just make it possible.

No, I'm not trying to troll, at least I don't mean to, I actually think that it is a good idea. I personally make an effort to buy made in USA products when I can, even if they cost more, although there is often no choice or the choice is not very clear cut due to mixed content. Very few things are made these days without some international content. I think that Apple could generate a lot of good will by bringing some aspects of production back to the US. Maybe they don't feel that is necessary given the incredible demand.

2012-09-24 11:10:33 AM
Since when do manufacturing plants require guard towers? A security station for preventing theft is one thing, but I'm guessing people aren't passing through metal detectors or anything like that in the tower, so other than shooting people, what is it there for?

It's actually far less than that. It's been shown that it would raise the price by about $65 (nearly all wage related) to have it built in the U.S. Apple could still sell the phone for the same price it does now but it would get less profit. Which is the whole reason every company eventually offshores to China. It's all about maximizing profit and there comes a point in production when the only way to squeeze more money is moving manufacturing.

Enuratique: sure haven't: Phaeon: bingethinker: sure haven't: I gotta say that Samsung's new commercial is deliciously awesome.

It's awesome to make Samsung owners look like smug douchebags?

It tries to make iPhone people look like dumbasses, but ends up making SIII people look like jackasses. They just had to trade playlists, videos/pics right in front of the line. These kind of phone commercials are part of a terrible cycle of fanboyish bullshiat circle jerking that is unnecessary and childish.

/Galaxy Note owner
//end rant

Well they still have to advertise (what they think are) the sellable aspects of their product. I think it was a well-done spot.
It outlined the ridiculousness that iPhone fans believe they are getting cutting edge tech, and that there is nothing better out there.

I think the best part of the commercial is the subtle digs at iPhone users at the end with the guy holding a spot in line for his parents. So cool even grandma and grandpa are getting in the action!

^^That^^. Yeah, the ad is obnoxious, but it does a fantastic job at parodying iFans and the sorts of comments they're known to make. Best line:
"I heard the new connector is all digital..." [Big, wonderous, excited smile] "...what does that even MEAN?"

And yeah, the part where he's holding a spot for his parents I found particularly amusing, as one of my parents just bought an iPhone (because it's "nothing too fancy").

The iPhone has become the "Jitterbug" of the smartphone world...

swaxhog: KarmicDisaster: Apple should take some of their spare billions that are just sitting there and set up a second assembly line in the US, pay the workers a good wage, and charge more for those phones. You can have a made in USA phone for $1000 or a ChiCom slave labor phone for $600. Your choice. I bet that a lot of people would buy the made locally phone if they could, especially now considering the shortage.

The problem isn't just cost; in fact cost is barely a consideration in the equation. According to Jobs, Apple stayed in China to have access to labor that was " flexible" in the sense that they could have these last-second product line turnarounds and launches. The big sell for Chinese manufacturing is the absence of pesky labor laws and general protections.

It's been working for Apple.

Sword and Shield: That's the core, at least for me. My Red Wings? Last pair lasted six years, cost $200. I'm a year in on the new set, and aside from some sole wear, they should last as long. The "cheaper" Wolverines or Caterpillars they replaced? Fifty bucks and lasted at best a year.

That actually sounds exactly like cost-based reasoning. In any case, I would never believe a word Jobs said about anything. He was a self deluded snake. Second off boo-hoo, plan better. It comes down to if you can shave $65 off an item and you're selling 50 million of them, it's too compelling to not go that way.

Huh. Never knew it had a name.

It holds, though. Unless whatever you're making is able to be overbuilt and still maintain a low price point, it benefits the buyer in the long game to pay for the good materials. A $6 no-name relay for my car burned out in a month, while the $16 Bosch German one still works after three years.

Economy is good, but it can be a false economy.

According to popular tech blog engadget, the disturbance kicked off after Foxconn security guards allegedly hit a worker around 10 p.m. on Sunday.

China is a horrible country to live in. If you actually have a job, the company beats you.

Mitch Taylor's Bro: wholedamnshow: xsarien: sure haven't: I gotta say that Samsung's new commercial is deliciously awesome.

If you think good advertising is illustrating your target customer as "A prick who has nothing better to do with his/her time than troll the people on line at an Apple store."

/ Call me when upgrading the OS on anything but a Nexus is as easy as pushing the "update" button in my phone's settings.
// Happy with the iPhone 4S.
/// Probably buy the 5S/6, though.

On my 1.5 year old HTC Evo 3D, I was prompted to install 4.0. Guess what happened? I pressed update and 30 minutes later.....I had Android 4.0.

Crazy right?

I was prompted to upgrade to iOS 6 within 48 hours of its release. 4.1 was released a while ago. How come you're not on the latest Android OS?

Because much like an iPhone, an Android phone is only given so many major software updates in it's lifetime. 4.0 was the last one for the Evo 3D.

Although, if I wanted to, I could easily root my phone and install Jellybean.

Much like an iPhone? Your phone is 1.5 years old. Mine (iPhone 4) is two years old. Essentially, they're the same vintage, but I get the latest OS. Do you at least get security updates in a timely manner?

Also, if you have to root your phone to get the latest software, is it really as easy as pushing a button?

I was just talking about this thread with a co-worker who loves his Android phone and we both agreed that the only way to get close to the Apple experience with Android is to buy whatever the latest Google Nexus phone is. Hardware Mfr and phone carrier just get in the way.
