(The Big Story)   Billie Joe Armstrong enters rehab for substance abuse. Well, sure, eyeliner technically *is* a substance. In totally unrelated news, Green Day's new album comes out Tuesday   (bigstory.ap.org) divider line 99

I am looking forward to that album. Is that wrong?

What the f*cking f*ck. Billie Joe doesn't have a 'substance abuse' problem, he's got a PR problem. The problem being thinking that he should own up to anything. There was NOTHING wrong with his tirade.

(yes, I believe it was not manufactured)

Been a huge fan since Dookie. When I was in bands in my youth we covered all their stuff. I'm not as big a fan now as I prefer their old stuff, but they're still rocking out. In a world filled with Taio Cruz's and Flo Rida's, you don't see hardly any actual musicians in Top 40. Good to see they're still around, even if they are like 40.

Joan Jett must have had a hell of a birthday to go straight to rehab afterwards

Does anyone else long for the days that Rock Stars went into Rehab because they had REAL problems?

Trent Reznors lifeless body was was carted through the laundry room of a London hotel after an overdose of heroin and he woke up a day later with a tube down is throat.

....that's a Rock Star. Go to Rehab.

Al Jourgensen had pawned all but one guitar and was sleeping on his dealers couch when a spider bit him, it became gangrenous, and the Doc wanted to amputate his arm due to all the complications from him being a heroin user.

....that's a Rock Star. Go to Rehab.

You have a hissy-fit about getting your set cut short and respond with a series of profanities, take the name of Justin Beiber and smash a guitar?

You're not a Rock Star. At best you're someone who takes your "art" more seriously than the rest of the world ever will and need to realize that the checks will keep coming no matter how little real effort you put into writing the next great pop-punk anthem.

2012-09-23 09:59:06 PM
Oooh. Rebellious punker backtracking and making excuses to appease his corporate sponsor overlords. "Clear Channel had nothing to do with our set being cut short. They are a charitable and noble company."

Alright, I admit it: I really liked Green Day when I was in high school. I still think Dookie was a pretty good album. I also think he had every right to be pissed off, and I'm just disappointed that he's apologizing now.

2012-09-23 10:14:27 PM
This band's 15 minutes was up around 1994.

2012-09-23 10:17:34 PM
That's too bad, his little red/black suit ensemble was so cute he could have been Barbie's punk rock neighbour. I can see the packaging now, "Billie-Joe" with little stars for each i and a little plastic guitar and make up kit. Comes with glittery anarchy stickers. Fully posable doll with styleable hair.

Mattel, you can still make this happen!

eddievercetti: Wow, he's so Jaded. That basket case should part of the minority of whiny rock stars. Good Riddance.

Hold on. Clearly the guy was in misery. Now he's seen the light and is just hitchin' a ride to rehab. It's not like he is in the minority with this act when it comes to rock star reject behavior. He's not even a real burnout since Green Day still puts out albums. Besides, it's like pulling teeth to get some people to go rehab and he goes voluntary? Like that happens all the time. (I'm looking at you Lohan.) In the end, good for him. I'm sure he's not having a blast there.

In other news - he also has a bruised prostate.

It's still a thing and it's still hilarious. So let's party like it's 1981 all up in here.

I don't think Fugazi is touring any time soon but I know Brendan Canty has a solo project and Ian McKaye has a project where he plays baritone guitar in between yelling at people for enjoying his music.

Joe Lally had the solo project, Brendan Canty does other stuff but hasn't released an album as a solo artist.

He's not apologizing to us, I think the rest of the band finally had enough of his bullshiat. They're all 40 years old, but he's the only one acting like he's 20.

And yeah, to address devilskware's point, he was farking up their sponsorship, and the money train. If you're a punk band that was last truly popular in the 90's, you can't do that.

Its not punk to kowtow to a sponsor, but only 14 year olds and crank- addled tweakers think green day is punk.

What the bleeding fark? They have a 'straight edge' Taxi driver shirt? The movie where he popped so much meth and liquor he kills 3 men, attempts to assassinate a presidential candidate, and 'saves' a preteen whore? Because he's having a mental/psychotic/schitzophrenic break due to being a veteran with untreated PTSD and raging meth issues?

Green Day is (not even close to) one of rock's top acts and had huge success with its 2004 politically charged album "American Idiot," which went on to become a (completely incomprehensible) Broadway musical. Armstrong performed for a stretch in the musical. (in a desperate attempt to save the show after extraordinarily poor ticket sales)

I just remember being in high school when these idiots came out. A bunch of the cool little alternakids would rag on me for listening to the Ramones when they had "real punk music" playing with Greenday. God I'm glad I moved out of that town.

2012-09-23 11:46:51 PM
I said this in the last thread, but pretty far down so I will repeat.

I can't be the only one who wants to see the three guys from Motorhead get in a bar fight with the three guys from Green Day.

Just think about it. You'll smile.

2012-09-23 11:55:56 PM
Which substance(s)? That's always my first question.

I'm guessing it's the booze, which would be supported by his previous DUI years back. Also, the outburst seemed booze-fueled.

These days, though, going to rehab for celebs seems to be employed more as a way to win back public favor than to permanently address a particular addiction. When it is substance-specific, it's usually something boring/legal like oxy or xanax. Ones on the illegal shiat usually blame it on exhaustion/emotional problems it seems.

/either way, fark this clown
//'being an asshole' is not often effectively corrected in traditional rehabilitation clinics.

Fark Punk Rockers™ don't think the Ramones were punk either. According to them, there were exactly eight "real punk" bands. And if you disagree with them, you're a poseur. Because nothing says "punk rock" like rote conformity.

He was a Marine. As was the guy at the taxi company who hires him. It's the first scene of the movie.

It's okay if you like Green Day and are looking forward to the new albums, but this is obviously a publicity stunt. They're not a new band, they know their set times.

2012-09-24 12:30:51 AM
Warning and American Idiot are probably my favorite Green Day albums. 21st Century Breakdown had some good tracks but was ultimately underwhelming. Sounds like that'll be my opinion with this upcoming trilogy. I sympathize wholeheartedly with Kill the DJ, but the otjher tracks I've heard are just meh.

And yes, I fully acknowledge that they're not punk. They're pop rock / arena rock now.

As for the tirade, there should be no apologies. They got shafted so that no-talent hack Usher could get more stage time. Fark that; I'd be pissed too if I had to surrender the stage early to bring on the shiatty dance music. At least Green Day play actual farking instruments instead of prefab looped beats.

Also, the eight bands were not allowed to have a commercially successful album or make any money whatsoever from their profession, at risk of being labeled sell-outs.

I guess that's a funny joke, if we're into stealing 25-year-old SNL "Weekend Update" punchlines.

I really hated them wehn they came out mainly due to this guy at work constantly talkign about how great they were. Over the years I warmed to them a bit, so I was interested to see them play the iHR show Saturady night. However, after the first few minutes where Billie Joe was doing nothing but cursing and acting like an idiot I stopped watching. The crowd didn't seem to into watching them either.

Given that this isn't his first time at the rehab rodeo, unlikely.

I'm still waiting for him to come out of the closet, which seems to be a more important issue.

'Cute Angry" from a rev'd up pop band. Some good tunes on Dookie, but they drank their own kool-aid. The Ramones make them look like school children raising their hands to make a punk rock pee pee.

No direct proof, but this is second trip to rehab in a very short time period, and he should -by rights- be pretty satisfied with his life at this point. Something is obviously bothering him on a deep level.
