Arthur Jumbles: TheDumbBlonde: WTF is a "bronie"?

I know someone downstream posted a link to what a bronie is but I'm too scared to click or Google it. Does it somehow involve cartoon ponies?

Brony is name given to people who are participating in embracing the fandom of My Little Pony-Friendship Is Magic and it's community of artists and enthusiasts.

That's it. End. Anything else is something someone else is trying to add to it, which us not present at its core.

(You may also find the term Pegasister used to describe female fans, although most of them also go by "bronies". The reason for that is because the etymology of brony uses the masculine "bro" in the portmanteau of bro's and pony)

Bullseye. "My sexual preference of dressing up like a cartoon wombat and anal fisting a person of indeterminate gender dressed as a cartoon cat crossed with a falcon while they give a blow job to someone dressed as a cartoon dog is normal, and beautiful and should be respected or at least left alone.

"But those My Little Pony guys... wow, man, that's just wrong."

Furries are a very well developed subculture that's been around for decades. They have tried very hard to be respected, and more importantly, they just want to be left alone to do their thing without bothering anyone.

Bronies have been around just a year or two now, they have lots of /b/tards, they spew their image memes everywhere, are very high profile, and you can get damn near any of them to admit to wanting to fark ponies. Furries might want to have sex with animals but at least they won't come out and SAY it to a complete stranger. In general, bronies are even creepier then furries. Bordering on rapist territory in terms of their social deficits and creepiness. I don't think bronies are rapists btw, just the ones who are 'out' are just as creepy as rapists.

That's called a plushie as far as I know. I always felt they were pretty harmless.

Beluga Heights: And let's be honest. Even the most "normal" among us has probably wanted to things they'd never publicly admit to.

I thought the issue here was that people are too willing to publicly admit to wanting to do stuff that makes other people uncomfortable.

abb3w: So, the existence gender norms are more instinctively fundamental than the existence of Gods?
That does make some sense.

I'd break it down a bit more than that. The mistake our culture makes is in conflating masculinity with maleness. They are very objectively not the same thing. A six-year-old boy is not masculine, because no child that age really can be. But he's just as male as Hulk Hogan, and no one would deny that. It's that conflation, more than anything else, I think, that leads to all the social stress and idiotic bullshiat we habitually characterise as gender fear. As if a drag queen literally loses her penis while performing, instead of merely concealing it. That's a moranic conflation, I think anyone would agree. But it's that same kind of thinking, perhaps on a less conscious level, that makes some men freak out over other men enjoying a cartoon about anthromorphic ponies.

Don't really know why people hate furries so much; did the school mascot rape you? Non-furries get up to far more bizarre stuff in the bedroom than a bit of yiffing in a squirrel suit. As long as everyone's having fun and everyone's consenting I've not the slightest interest in what people do with their tingly bits.

I have to say, I'm really skeptical of views about gender norms and masculinity from someone who has a vested interest in changing them. Doesn't really strike me as very objective, for the most part.

God doesn't exist. People do. It makes perfect sense.

Although I would say lack of religion is a good reason to throw away defined gender roles. Once you take away the whole 'greater purpose' and all that rubbish there really isn't a whole lot of a reason to make other live the way you want them to anymore.

Foxxinnia: The thing with bronies is how they're constantly shoving their shiat into other people's shiat. I mean, that's what nerds of all stripes do, but today I couldn't go 20 posts in the football thread with some pony pictures. I mean, farking shiat, why do people do that? I'd be just as annoyed as some dullards posting Doctor Who shiat or something but fark, guys, piss off. I like shiat too, but I'm not constantly posting images of those things in contexts where they don't make sense. "Oh look a hockey thread! I'm going to post pictures of Columbo because I love Columbo and I have a bunch of images of Columbo with text on them!" That's what I'd be doing if I had tenth degree autism like bronies do.

You're taking your internet thread about a child's game played by overgrown men on performance enhancing drugs who pat each other on the ass a lot a bit too seriously.

Some of you might not know, but on 4chan, there's a group of 100 bronies or so, who have kept up an active thread on the /b/ board for almost 2 years straight now. They don't even discuss the show, it's just a big circle jerk, small talk, and mutual admiration. They have their own dedicated board, but refuse to use it. Mods delete their threads and ban them frequently, but they simply reset their router or use a new proxy to continue posting.

Why they would persist in doing this in a hostile environment, I don't know. I suspect some kind of narcissistic personality disorder is at work.

No fooling. I've been to BDSM cons, Furry cons, Anime cons, Watching the freakshows there is always a hilariously uncomfortable time.

/Howard Sterns news team has been banned from bronycon because they were able to find 10 bronies who admitted to having sexual feelings for (real live) horses, and or farking stuffed animals, and were willing to say it on tape to be broadcast to an audience of millions.
//Ask any furry about Yiff and its "oh god, you saw that CSI episode. It's not like that."

The thing is... I've been in the fet community for quite some time.

Pretty much every outgoing person you would meet at a con, regardless of what kind of con it is, likes sex.

Because sex.

I'm a brony. Proud of it. Don't give a damn if anyone else likes it or not.

I'm also a kinkster. Proud of it. Don't give a damn if anyone else likes it or not.

I'm also a Rennie, SCAdian, LARPer, gamer, trekkie, petrolhead, sewing nut, corseter, techie, farker, bNer, slashdotter, etc etc etc..

I know some people in each group that like sex. Go figure. Some of them are freaking weird. Go figure. Doesn't mean that every activity I engage in is sexualized for me.

Why does everything a person identifies with have anything to do with what gets them off?

You know. I think it's fine to be a furry -- if everyone is consenting and on board and old enough I mean I guess most things are okay, even if I find them personally something I'm not interested in. The backlash against people who like to dress up like a dog/horse/cat and get farked doesn't make a ton of sense to me. To each his own I suppose. And let's be honest. Even the most "normal" among us has probably wanted to things they'd never publicly admit to.

Interesting.

The 23.5% of furries also identifying as bronies did not significantly differ from other furries in most respects; they reported greater experience of bullying, slightly worse physical health, and appeared to have a slightly less-formed sense of identity

Furries did not differ significantly to American non-furs with regard to psychological or relationship health, or self-esteem, but had a more-developed sense of self and identity

Still trying to wrap my head around this part.

Yeh, I'd say if you dress like a Disney chipmunk to socialize and have "sex", I'd say you have a pretty well-developed sense of self and idenity. I'd say you have self-realized and accepted your own farked up identity. You probably know some good dry-cleaners, too.

But it seems to indicate that furries who are also bronies have a LESS developed sense of identity. Why would that be?
