But being reductive, vague, obstructionists has worked so WELL for the last four years. Whattya mean we actually need to start talking about WHAT we'd do differently and not just cast blame???

Don't be absurd! Romney is running on his record as a pro-choice, Northeastern moderate who supports gun control, stem-cell research, raising the minimum wage, regulation of greenhouse gas emissions and gay marriage. Oh, and I think he did something nice involving health care as governor, but I can't remember all the details. There's no way he can lose with a record like that to run on, which is why the Republican base is so fired up!

Nope, because the Recession has been over since summer of '09. The recovery will be his, and the fact that you are willing to admit that there IS a recovery is all that matters.

Cletus C.: If Obama wins a second term will it finally be his?

NO. Do you realize that a "recession" is a mathematically defined term? Do you understand that it began in 2007 and ended in June of 2009? That's not a matter of opinion -- it's based on how the term "recession" is defined. Do you get that something that happened on someone else's watch and was over, BY DEFINITION, just a few months after Obama took office is not, and never will be, "Obama's Recession"?

We are not in a recession now. We haven't been in one for most of Obama's term. You don't even know what a recession is, so stop typing, and go read a farking book.

Hi, I'd like to introduce you to the Great Depression.

I'm reading about the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Panic of 1873 was still severely limiting business in 1879 because there was no way to control rampant speculation and dirty dealings in railroad stocks. They bounced the economy around like a pingpong ball into the 1880s.

2012-09-23 07:28:13 PM
The Republican challenge was: are you better off than four years ago?

Our IRA was down 40% during the final 18 months of the Bush administration. It began to recover immediately after the election and within six months of Obama taking office had largely regained its full value.

It is up 10% this year -- except for the international stocks which are up only about 2%. And the dollar is stronger (one reason international stocks have lagged for two years).

They'd probably be stronger but John Boehner now says he wasn't serious about previous deficit reduction agreements.

Doesn't matter. They all know how Obama really feels about guns in his heart of hearts, and that matters much more than any petty actions the candidates might of might not have taken.

I've had this discussion my with family's tea partier. When I bring up the fact that only Romney has restricted gun use, I'm told it's a liberal media lie. Even if I use specific facts like the AWB, it doesn't matter.

People that exist in the Fox News echo chamber simply attribute any contradiction in facts to liberal lies. Either the facts agree with their views, or they're not really facts.

I have an aunt like this. She drinks up the Fox News milkshake and chases it with a a shot of Breitbart Kool Aid. Anything negative about Obama is automatically true, and anything that contradicts it are "lies coked up by the Socialist Atheist Gay Muslim conspiracy".

If Sean Hannity said that Obama was really a transsexual alien dwarf, I bet she'd believe that too.

I suspect she was dropped on her head several times as a baby and ate paint chips as a toddler.

St_Francis_P: The Romney campaign has premised much of its message on Obama's economic record and has repeatedly refused to flesh out detailed policy proposals on issues from tax reform to immigration reform. The Romney campaign recently promised to reveal more specifics about what Romney would do in office, but has been slow to provide them.

Aren't the details supposed to be secret, but he'll reveal them once he's President?

No, no, the GOP do have a record to run on - it's just happens to be awful.

Anyone who says that Obama, being a Democrat, is destroying the economy, let me point out that there have been three recessions in the past 30 years - 1982, 1990, and 2007, and all three occurred under Republican presidents. The only real period of massive economic growth in there happened in the mid-late 1990s, under ... who? A Democrat. The Republicans have no credibility - none - when it comes to the economy, and their supporters may kindly STFU now.

As opposed to the freefall that he was presented with...

The same freefall conditions that Romney favors. You know, because if companies go under, and there aren't American firms to absorb their competitors, it's good when foreign or multinats come in to scoop up properties and assets, because the cash that exports does Americans so much good when it's socked away in foreign banks. It's science. Especially when those same banks don't really invest much here, save in the derivatives and less than actual financial devices...

Thanks in no small part to the GOP in Congress who have done everything they can to stop any sort of legislation to help improve the economy. The latest one? I truly don't know what the tipping point was. I have been avoiding conversations with him lately because he is such a nut. But he's been off for a week or so, and when he came in tonight he just said without provocation that he's given up on supporting this ticket. He said he still plans on going postal after the election (his exact words), but he now knows that Obama is going to have a second term. It was very strange. But he is a pretty good example of the anyone but Obama crowd, and for him to give up now is a pretty good indication that Romney doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell.
