(Yahoo)   The bad news for for dairy cattle is that corn feed is scarcer and costlier than ever. The good news is they are being fed cookies, gummy worms, marshmallows, and fruit loops. The best news is it's a great time to be a bovine dentist   (news.yahoo.com) divider line 16

Just wanted to point out that Mad cow is caused by species eating their own species. Not just cows eating meat or something. Humans eating other humans has the chance to contract this same disease. Learn how to disease works if you are curious.

This is the same reason why human milk will never be for sale. If you are going to be drinking milk from the same species it needs to be genetically the same, such as your mothers, or you will run the very low risk of this prion disease.

Human breast milk market will not go far. Who wants to drink that milk? Maybe if the woman were on organic diets but that just WONT happen. Or at least STRICT diets. You can be sure that breast milk will be loaded with mcdonalds and taco bell.

THIS!
What a bunch of idiots. Letting your cows graze on grass makes for healthy cows and tastier healthier meat. Go back to nature you fools. Stop feeding corn to your cows, and you'll avoid tons of problems and costs. You won't have to waste money to pump them with medicine just to keep them alive.

Maybe they don't have grass to feed them... you know, because of the drought?

That's what you get for turning so much corn into fuel for cars.

It's more likely that they don't own pasture. And the cattle are on a feed lot, this permits a faster turn around. This is done by using corn and soybeans for a major part of the food source, its mixed with antibiotics and other crap like animal protein. This effectively turns the herbivore into an omnivore and is one of the reason behind bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

Alphakronik: Actually, that's the best news, considering that cows stomachs cannot process corn.

They can't process fruit loops either.

Cattle eat grass, which their gut bacteria eat. The cattle digest the bacteria for their energy and growth. Eating grain or junk food causes their guts to become too acidic for the bacteria. So while the cattle can put on pounds while eating garbage, they will become increasingly unhealthy. This is why most beef cattle are only finished on grain, and why pastured dairy cattle produce superior milk.

You get what you pay for.

My uncle, who owned a bakery and a hobby farm, used to feed his cows with a kind of slop made from cookies.

He used to bellow "COOOOOKIES!" out over the field and the cows would come GALLOPING in.

Was quite funny.

Do you know how much room it takes to grow enough grass to satisfy the 95 million cattle in the U.S.? I don't

We're constantly finding new places to raise cattle under those pesky rainforests.

And with less rainforests we have more CO2 in the atmosphere causing more droughts destroying more corn crops. It's the circle of life.

Corn is a grass. Big juicy grass.

Yes, I know but I assumed he meant he wanted the cows to free range graze. And I just don't think that's physically possible unless our cattle population was significantly smaller. Plus the fact that the drought killed all grasses not just corn.

Good grief. Where do you live? Seriously. There was a serious drought this year. Some Cattle are just dropping dead in the pastures from eating drought stressed grass....if there is anything to even graze in the first place.

So what if farmers are pumping their stupid obese cattle full of starchy crap barely fit for human consumption and then pumping them full of antibiotics until every microbe on Earth is immune to them all ... wait , that sounds familiar, where have I heard that business plan before?

Oh, well. it makes a change from their usual herbivorous diet of fish meal, fallen comrades, soya byproduct and roadkill.

I don't know whether Soylent Green would be worse than this system of industrialized agriculture--it would cut out the middle man (so to speak), and there would be no danger of the movie Black Sheep becoming a mockumentary. Also, it would reverse the relationship between the size limits of the population and the food supply.

Corn here in mid-west Indiana was looking like crap in July. It looks fine now. I don't know if the bad start will affect the yeilds but it looks like a normal year from the road.
