"It's unfortunate because Imelda may have worn some of these clothes in major official events and as such have an important place in our history," he said.

I get that they have some historical significance, but surely they can just choose a few pairs as representative of her reign and lose the rest. They weren't even displaying them.

I mean, it would be cool to have a pair of George Washington's shoes on display somewhere, but do we really need every pair he ever wore?

Does anyone there really give a sh*t? I mean honestly, the whole reason for the shoes' significance is that they were a symbol of the kind of irresponsible decadence that pervaded the Marcos' regime while many of their citizens lived in desperate poverty. I'm kind of amazed that they weren't burned/shredded.

It would be like French peasants crying because Marie Antoinette's powdered wigs were found moth-eaten in a closet.

My grandfather was somehow good friends with her husband during World War II. I think they worked together when he was stationed in Australia, or something. I don't remember all the details, but my grandmother kind of hung out with her a few times or something to that affect. Anyways when she kind of lost her wealth or status in the Philippines, she wrote a letter to my grandmother asking her to send her female American products like panty hoses, and other things. My grandmother said she was a high class biatched, and she literally burned the letter. She said she wished she kept the letter to show off how much of a biatch she was.

After having been stricken with the Marcos' in the first place, I don't see why the people of the Philippines would be obligated to curate all of their leftover shiat. They should have handed all of those shoes out to people who needed them.

Imelda Marcos, now a member of the House of Representatives...

Why does this not surprise me? She and her husband looted that country and were driven into exile, so of course they should elect her right back into government.

Thing is, Marcos had the idea of democracy in the back of his mind.
But he wasn't able to do anything about it because his palaces were ransacked by a bunch of commie peasants looking for a free pair of shoes.

I visited the palace in the early 90's while my parents were stationed at one of the US bases. The entire basement of the palace was shoes. That may not seem like much until you figure that the basement was larger than most US middle-class houses.

Sic semper tyrannis!

How's the Filipino economy doing post-departure of the Marcosiosi? Might this not be a fitting symbol of a country long infested by kleptocrats as well as termites and mold?

I was stationed on Guam when the US evacuated her and their plan landed on Anderson AFB. Several of us lined the landing strip and waved them hello with the one finger salute.

To be fair, with the rain, humidity, brownouts, insects, and heat, it's pretty hard to keep anything you own in good condition for very long here. The university I'm at has a world class anthropology museum. It and the library are the only building on campus that's climate controlled 24/7.
