But was it good?

2012-09-23 01:43:09 PM
End Of Watch was entertaining. The amount of slow motion shots in the trailers for Dredd 3D were too Snyder-esque for my taste,so I skipped it. Seems I made the right decision.

I'm interested in seeing Dredd, I just didn't get a chance to go see it this weekend. I think its biggest problem is that the only knowledge most American's have of Judge Dredd is the god-awful Stallone version.

2012-09-23 02:15:30 PM
"House at the End of the Street" could also be called "Jennifer Lawrence's cleavage, with a side of Elisabeth Shue, and boy that guy from 'Ally McBeal' got old".

Not bad at all, but no Hitchcock.

Saw Dredd. Decent. A legitimately fun movie. It uses every single action movie cliche possibly ever, but it works. Some of the best/worst one-liners since Commando. The whole thing felt like a mix between Die Hard (taking place in the plaza) and a videogame.

2012-09-23 02:30:01 PM
Dredd was awesome. It's such an improvement over the prior, and despite Dredd being something of an anti-hero... it's just a damn good film.

2012-09-23 02:34:18 PM
All of the reviews that I've read (from trusted sources) agree that Dredd is a fun action film with little in the way of cheese and mostly faithful to the 2000 AD character. Just because it flopped, firstie, doesn't mean it isn't good. You must also love Nickelback.

MadSkillz: But was it good?

Apparently, its sitting at a not too shabby 77% on rotten tomatoes right now. I was surprised, I was more expecting it to be one of those movies that are so bad that they are good.

2012-09-23 02:37:09 PM
I saw it just yesterday, and it's actually not awful. Visually, it's the mostimpressive movieI've seen in 3D. They actually use it to good effect, and there's no major "jump out at you" scenes.

The story and acting are pretty meh. It's just a normal action flick in those regards.

2012-09-23 02:37:13 PM
I didn't see the Dredd movie. I didn't want to see it. Is it based off of a comic book character? Just curious. My husband and I are actually waiting to see Hotel Transylvania. Did I mention that I am in my 40's and my husband is in his 50's? I want to be able to laugh and Dredd didn't seem to make me want to laugh. I could be wrong. Still ain't gonna see it.

Didn't the original bomb too?

It was the first in a string of bombs that turned Stallone into the HGH-sodden punch line he is today.

Dredd is a great movie, Urban kicks ass, the 3D is great. And yes, he says "I AM THE LAW!"

fark it, let's all go see Looper.

I liked Dredd 3d. Too bad it didn't do better.

2012-09-23 03:24:51 PM
Olivia Thirlby was great as Judge Anderson.

Plus I think the body count in the movie must be over 300, putting it within the top 10.

2012-09-23 03:39:21 PM
Dredd vindicated my Man-Crush on Karl Urban. Very kick ass awesome action flick. I'm not sure how true it is to the comics, but enjoyable as hell.

2012-09-23 03:56:28 PM
Dredd was fantastic. I'd recommend it to anyone who knows the character, and anyone who likes stylish action movies. I think the stink of the original is still hurting Dredd. Farking Stallone.

2012-09-23 04:06:45 PM
Dredd was good. Not one of the greatest action movies but it was basically a "guns and explosions" movie with a brain. So yeah it was good.

I bet Nickleback would be a great cover band.

Doesn't the plot of Dredd revolve around a drug called Slo-Mo? In this case, it seems like gratuitous use of slow motion is warranted.

Am I the only one that hated the #HATES tag for "The House at the End of the Street".

Acronyms, how do they farking work?

2012-09-23 04:42:54 PM
I thought about going to see Dredd on Friday night, ended up going for End of Watch instead. Don't feel particularly cheated by that decision - EoW was quite good as far as "movies you go see for the sake of having something to do on your night off" go. Might go see Dredd on Tuesday, when I can get in for half-price.

Apparently. It's reviewing remarkably well. And I'm a big fan of the comics, so I'm pretty stoked on seeing it.

Finished 6th behind Resident Evil and Nemo... Attention Hollywood - THis is not, I repete, NOT a story that translates well into a movie. Please quit making shiat ile this.

Thank you, your movie seeing public

If anything, the vision of Megacity 1 is even more dystopian in the film than it is in the comic, which is very cool.

/ Saw this yesterday, thoroughly enjoyed it

....which is a damn clever pretext to overuse it,so I'll give them that.

I swear the film makers saved money by just flying over LA a few times in a helicopter and the filming inside a Detriot tenement building.

This will be a cult classic once it hits cable.

i saw end of watch this weekend. aside from the ridiculous amount of shaky cam, damn good flick--especially if you're into the whole LA Cop Movie genre like Training Day, etc.

2012-09-23 06:01:19 PM
I'm determined to see Dredd tonight. I've been looking forward to it ever since they announced it. At some point this week I'll be going to House at the End of the Street. It looks okay at best, but I've developed quite a huge thing for Jennifer Lawrence.

2012-09-23 06:14:27 PM
Dredd was much better than expected. Definitely makes up for the Stalone version.

2012-09-23 06:27:36 PM
Saw The Master...still don't really know what to say about it, but Joaquin Phoenix gave one of the best performances inthe history of film, and even outdid P.S. Hoffman. Which I didn't think was possible, especially considering that he too knocked it out of the park.

2012-09-23 06:44:18 PM
Saw Dredd today and it was great - everything I was expecting it to be.
It's basically "The Raid: Redemption" plus "Robocop". I think word-of-mouth after its theatrical run will redeem it.

2012-09-23 07:08:21 PM
The success of a film should be measured over the course of generations, not its first weekend of inflation-unadjusted ticket sales. Many movies we now consider classics flopped in their initial releases.

Yeah, The Master is one of those movies where I'll have to watch it again months from now. It's like PT Anderson's Terrence Malick homage and I mean that in a good way. Joaquin Phoenix just owned the movie, well maybe not owned but he was just a force of nature that the rest of the movie reacted to. I would not be surprised if he's nominated.

Judge Dredd looks like a Syffy Saturday special, glad it bombed, so there will be no more sequels.

The Master was amazing. Phoenix, wow. Hoffman WOW.

Gaambit

You're right. If there's any way, I think word-of-mouth may play a factor.

I ended up seeing House at the End of the Street. Wasn't great by any means, but the acting was decent enough to make it more than tolerable. It plays a lot like Orphan I found.

Liked 'End of Watch' - in many respects (imho) better than 'Training Day' - better representative of cops I've known. Denzel W's brilliance carried the latter, but in a way similar to some Jack Nicholson movies - it becomes a medium about Jack. Whereas I'd pay what I consider high praise for Jake G & Michael Ps' performances - they were cops, right down to the goofy HS/military pranks/humor.

Was disappointed w/ latest Resident Evil flick - first of the line that I thought wasn't worth the price of the popcorn. (BTW AMC: six bucks for a freaking small? Last one I'm buying from you...)

Dredd was... solid. If I were to rate similar movies I'd say 'Priest' > Dredd > Jonah Hex, (but what recent movie isn't > Jonah Hex... )

/want to see 'The Master' - guess I'll have to wait a few months until it makes it to the arthouse theater.... :>/
//critics weren't kind to Jennifer L's new movie... Shooting for matinee Tuesday.

And the movies with the rotten tomato ratings are competing for top spot at the box office.

Lowest common denominator, indeed...

Biggest mistake I made this week was seeing that in IMAX. I should have just burned $17.50 instead...

The wife and I loved it. Haven't had a good dumb action movie in a long time. Perfect pacing, Die Hardesque, wasn't offensive to the intellect in that it knew exactly what movie it was supposed to be. Perfect.

2012-09-23 09:30:17 PM
If you need a dose of the old ultraviolence, then Dreed is perfect for you. Unapologetic and in your face. Not enough good quotable lines to make it a cult classic unfortunatly.

IMHO, whoever wrote the script for "Robocop" HAD to have been influenced by the Judge Dredd comic back in the day.

Yup, there's Citizen Kane, for example. You can also say the same thing for TV Shows. Didn't the original Star Trek show only last one season?
