Funny, most of those are words that English stole and filed off the serial numbers. They're probably "popular" because they don't quite fit the usual sound mosaic used in more boring words that came straight through from Old Saxon or Old Norse, but they're familiar enough not to be "furrin".

It bugs me when people say a foreign word "had no English translation." If that's the case then we steal the word. It's really simple. "Saudade is a unique Galician-Portuguese word that has no immediate translation in English." Yeah whatever Wikipedia. You know what the English word for "Saudade" is? It's "Saudade." That's English now. Piss off you Galician-Portuguese ethno-lingual farks. We'll steal anything we want.

In all honesty, no, but it did remind me. I was a big fan of Edgar Allan Poe in my youth and first ran across the word in relation to "The Cask of Amontillado" which still gives me the occasional nightmare.

I've always been partial to lugubrious and its verbal form lugubricate.

English is the language of the conquered.

It has bits and pieces of languages of people who conquered England since those people had to talk to their conquerors.

So it is the other way around, other languages pursued English down alleyways, conquered them, and stuffed their vocabulary into the English languages pocket.


English of the past though is not the English of today and the English of today is not going to be the same as the English of tomorrow.

There is an English that isn't English spoken by those who have never met a real speaker of the language. It uses English words and bastardized versions of English words, but uses foreign structures and locally popular non-English words. I wonder if that is the future of the English "language".
