Tropical fish don't like irony.

It appears a large fish tank inside the home may have caught on fire.
...crews think the fire started in the aquarium.

I want to party with those fish.

No kidding. Mine are boring as sin. They just go back and forth, back and forth, and so on. Like a boring tennis game.

/ back and forth....

"This is why Fark invented the Ironic tag" - I thought it was so people could whine about the true meaning of irony and quote Alanis Morissette.

That would be ironic.

There were scorch marks up the walls and ash throughout the entire house, Payne said. He was surprised no one called to report the fire while the couple were away; the fire would have been noticeable from outside, he said.

Eh, the neighbors probably thought it was a Thomas Kinkade painting.

In before the irony-nazis pointing out why this isn't really ironic, don't you think?

Just out of curiosity, what wonderfully entertaining thing would you be doing while trapped in a glass box? Other than pacing back and forth and looking for a way out?

Sadly, this situation was merely coincidental. Ironic would have been if, after catching fire, the water somehow made the fire worse.

Nezu Chiza: Sadly, this situation was merely coincidental. Ironic would have been if, after catching fire, the water somehow made the fire worse.

Now, now. Subby is correct. This is why they invented the irony tag. Not for ironic situations but for hypocrisy and coincidence. There are also times when the juxtaposition of two qualities, such as fire and water, can also elucidate an ironic tag.

Kids! Let me tell you something!

Let's just suppose you walk into a room and someone accidently fills the fish tank with gasoline...

I was surprised to find out that fridges often catch fire. We had a canteen burn out after an old fridge caught fire...

A "convenient" tag would probably be more apropos here.

It's close but it's not close enough. Aside from Nezu Chiza's example, the water does not appear to be the cause of the fire.

I think I saw that episode of My Goldfish is Evil (CBC, 2006)

What the hey! It was cheap, it was second hand (never opened), and it came with a cool My Goldfish is Evil notebook you can take to school and show your friends or use as a secret diary.

So let me get this straight subby, one wouldn't think that water would put out a fire, hence the ironic tag?

Came here to biatch about the lack of irony, but I really like your point and this has calmed me down.

/Am I the only one who thinks that Alanis Morrissette song is actually cleverly ironic on the basis that it gets EVERY SINGLE example of supposed irony completely wrong? If it was just mostly wrong it would be stupid, but a 100% record of irony failure for a bunch of different reasons actually makes a good point by omission.

I agree that the Alanis Morrissette song is clever that way, but it would have been better if she had actually intended that. It wasn't until someone pointed out that she had used irony incorrectly that she scrambled for a defense. One that fits WELL, yes, but after the fact.

Uh, yes.

They would not, however, be the Spanish Inquisition.
