CSB:

When my son was 4, he had a Spiderman-themed Leap Pad narrated by Mister Excelsior himself. When Stan Lee showed up on a TV show flogging some Marvel property, my kid said "Hey, that's Stan Lee".

I don't know about the rest of you, but when your 80 year old voice gets name-checked by a four-year-old, that's fame.

Let's hope that he knew what he was talking about with radiation.

After all the radioactive origins, I always thought it funny that mutants were invented when he just threw his hands up and said he didn't feel like explaining.

When I was a young lad in the mid-70's, I got to meet Jack Kirby when they used to hold the San Diego Comic Con on the top floor of the El Cortez Hotel. Hell of a nice guy. He signed a Fantastic Four comic drawn by him that I had just bought. If they ever invent a time machine I will cock punch the young adult me who sold that issue when he sold his entire collection.

Really? Stan's comment about the writer being the sole creator is what made me say Stan's a dick. Steve is crazy but his stance on being an equal creator of Spider-Man is valid I think.

Towards the end he says he relented and said Steve was the co-creator as well. Wasn't good enough for Ditko. Then he actually writes Ditko a note saying as much for Ditko to even show people if he chooses and it still wasn't good enough for him. He even insisted that Ditko's name be alongside his in the movies. It just seems to me that Ditko is holding on to a grudge from private argument these two had long ago, that Stan has long conceded to.

I mean he IS 89-years-old...So if he did pass it's not like it wouldn't be unexpected.

I'd still be sad though...the man is an icon...a legend. A mastermind like that behind most of the comic books most of us read, the cartoons a lot of us watched as children- it truly would be sad. =(

You can never beat the Kirby fanboys. They're always waiting to pounce on anything with the name "Stan Lee" in it.

Poor bastards... they just don't realize that without guys like Lee or Joe Simon, Kirby's work was laughably horrible, and Kirby would have been nothing.

I love Stan Lee, but I can see how this would piss off Ditko. For a person with a lot of pride (which most artistic individuals are), it can feel pretty condescending. It would feel as if Ditko needed Lee's permission to be the co-creator. He didn't want a gold star to put on his fridge that said "congrats, you made Spiderman!" He wanted the world at large to recognize his involvement. No amount of apology could fix that..

Stan used weasel words in his letter to Ditko, in my opinion, and in the interview he sticks to his guns that as the writer he deserves all the credit.

I guess this is like a Beatles thing, you're either a John fan or a Paul fan. With Marvel, you either side with Kirby and Ditko or you side with Stan. And never the twain shall meet.

And I'll even throw in I think Roy Thomas deserves a lot of credit for shaping the tone of Marvel's Silver age when it comes to writing. Artwise, Kirby, Ditko, Heck, Wood, Steranko, Romita, Buscema, those guys all deserve some sort of compensation for what's been done with their creations. SHIELD is really Jim Steranko's baby, he added more to the Nick Fury mythos than almost any other creator in the bullpen.

I've had him in my dead pool since he screwed his co creators out of their rights and money.

Whats with the damned Sad tag.

Maybe he won the lottery?

Maybe Hugh Heffner invited him to spend a couple months at the mansion?

I was supposed to go to the Ohio con, but not enough $ ..

/Yes, I know... odds are, things are not great in his universe right now, but I refuse to think its *really* bad until he says something. At his age... he may have just lost a close friend or another business partner..(yes, that WOULD be sad tag) or maybe he is just fatigued from his demanding schedule again.

You think Stan Lee was the one that did that?

assets.diylol.com

See, Stan Lee was just an editor at Marvel until around 1970. The man who ran Marvel was Martin Goodman.

Also, the creators knew that they would be handing over rights to whatever they created to Timely/Atlas/Marvel, yet they still created for them anyway! What a shock! Hell, Lee had to hand over rights to what he co-created to the company, as well. So why, if Lee was so responsible for "stealing" rights and money, would he have handed over rights to what he created to the company and not have kept everything for himself?

Oh, right, because he was as much an employee as everyone else who got "screwed".
