I should have specified I honestly enjoy MLP:FiM, though stuff like Cupcakes cracks me up. Of course, being a furry artist, I've seen things that would give Cthulhu nightmares.

I like how Rainbow Dash Presents can take a steaming pile fanfiction, like Rainbow Factory, and make it actually compelling.

I also like how, because the show's done in Flash, most of the fanimation is on par with or better than the actual studio animations.

Picture Perfect Pony blew me away. How many hours of people vectorizing ponies and generating original characters did that take? I'm not sure I want to know. Same for the Double Rainboom project to create an entirely fan-made episode.

Right? Seriously though, it took 24 days over 3 months. Says it right in the info. You only have to vector each bit once, then you have a puppet and you can work with the angles and bits seperately after that. A day to make a puppet and an hour to cobble together some walking or something.

Even still, the voices, the music, the editing: it's easily as good as the real show. Possibly a little tighter. Then of course the fan comics. Veggie retired, but his stuff was rock solid comic material. I really can't wait to see what he does next, pony or no. You can't stop an artist that good.

I wish I "got" the brony thing. I really do. I mean, yeah, it's got stuff in it that is definitely there to appeal to the adults, but most popular kids' shows do. I about fell off my couch on one when Applejack said, "Oh, horse apples!" Couldn't explain that one to my kids. And yeah, Discord being voiced by John DeLancie made me perk up a bit. But...um...again, the stuff for the adults is for the parents/guardians/daycare people stuck watching it. And, God help me, this is coming from someone who has watched cartoons alone.

I could totally see watching Adventure Time without kids being around, though.

Hence, ridicule is due to men who have passionate interests in little girl's toys.

theMightyRegeya: I wish I "got" the brony thing. I really do.

My Little Pony is, from an animation stand point, kind of like Tombstone was to western movies: a perfect blend of old and new talent with a good story to work with.

It was pitched by Lauren Faust (wife of craig mccracken) and has voices like Tara Strong and Kathleen Barr on board. Tabitha St Germain came with the Pony franchise, and while I was unaware she's damn good. Then on the animation you've got some really good people who've done other stuff, like Sibsy, who did a lot of Disney stuff, as well as the inspirations draw straight from Looney Tunes and other classic animation with the anime inspired gloss to make the ponies look less like hideous hippos of the previous generations and more like real cartoon characters and some really talented guys on music and sound.

Then take all that and give the characters decent personalities and an interesting wold. Previously, the ponies would sit around and highlight of the day was Pinkie having a pretend tea party with her dolls. In this incarnation, dragons attack, battles are fought, and every few days one of the main characters goes completely farking insane.

It's not for everyone, but if you like cartoons there's nothing better on the air in the past five years, including Adventure Time. Adventure Time is aimed squarely at the same audience that composes bronies, and has almost the same formula, but it's just not quite as good despite being solid gold.

But yeah, the brony thing is a bit obsessive and creepy. At the same time, I've been in Japan for years and watched my friend get a PhDs in anthropology to study Otaku for most of this last decade. I'd bet that beyond the last century - back through the ages adult males would reject their peers who had a propensity to indulge in children's activities.

I know there are some modern psychologists who champion the inner child expression/ageless happiness stuff but frankly most adult males find it repulsive.

But, as much as I dislike this man-child business, in the end, we all have one life on earth so...whatever makes you happy. Our society can exist today on an infinitely more diverse structure within the gender roles than we are/were programmed for.

Many of us are saddened by the loss of traditional masculinity in today's world, with a general sense of disgust that comes from a deeper place in our psyche and understanding of our gender and social roles.

Pinkie IS Pepe le Pew. I'm not even joking.

In Party of One, there's a scene where Pinkie chases Rainbow Dash around Ponyville. Most of the chase is, shot for freakin' shot, copied right out of a 1950's episode of Looney Tunes where Pepe le Pew is in the Alps. If I had editing software, I'd do a split screen to demonstrate.

If you like Looney Tunes, you like FiM. You just don't know it yet.

PBS tried to answer that this summer, but they were also kinda trolling.

But you've already answered it - the same reason you (and I) enjoy Adventure Time. Or before that, Freakazoid, Animaniacs, and the original Warner Bros. cartoons.

As I remember the history, the original essay The End of the Creator-Driven Era brought it to /co/. The Wired Article from 2011 took it from /co/ and the chans to the nerd manestream. Watch a few pony-related videos, wonder WTF everybody's talking about, conclude that whateverTF they're talking about, this is obviously not the same MLP that you flipped past while looking for a new episode of GI Joe or G-Force back in the 80s, and decide to watch a few episodes just to see what all the fuss was about.

And that's how Equestria was made.

I get that, yet...I don't know. I'm a grown man who can still appreciate Star Wars, goes to every new Pixar release whether my kids want to see it or not, I've sat down and watched old Rocky and Bullwinkles when the kids aren't around, and...nah.

Kinda funny that they'd go after My Little Pony:

www.wgbh.org

Same studio, some of the same people, Martha is voiced by Tabitha St. Germain (Rarity) and Helen is voiced by Madeleine Peters (Scootaloo). Alice is voiced by Michelle Creber (Apple Blossom). What? I have kids, have seen a lot of both, saw the same studio logo on both, and on one episode of Martha Speaks, Martha does some weird thing where she sounds a little like Rarity. I'm an IMDB junkie.
