It's pretty awesome that they had so many people sign the bulkheads. I'm assuming they're mostly the technicians, engineers, mission control, support staff, and so on. Must be pretty cool to know that you've literally left your mark on such an amazing program.

What's more astonishing is that not one of them drew a spurting weiner.

Been there, done that. Adult Space academy has 1:1 simulators with all switches working. Pilot has to flip something like 190 switches, in order, in two minutes during the last part of countdown and first part of liftoff.

Beerguy: SOOO.....MANY......SWITCHES.....

Oh, cut the bleeding heart crap, will ya? We've all got our switches, lights, and knobs to deal with, Beerguy. I mean, down here there are literally hundreds and thousands of blinking, beeping, and flashing lights, blinking and beeping and flashing - they're *flashing* and they're *beeping*. I can't stand it anymore! They're *blinking* and *beeping* and *flashing*! Why doesn't somebody pull the plug!

Pictures from inside Space Shuttle Enterprise. The flight deck was stripped of avionics after the Approach and Landing Tests, and the cargo bay is just a skeleton.

Anyone who looks at that and isn't in awe either has no soul or sold theirs beforehand to an immortal atom cult.

CSB. When I was there in 1989 the crew cabin mockup had switches, buttons, and sticks that didn't move. Probably because it had been converted from the donated movie set of the film SpaceCamp (1986). It did look like being inside the shuttle though.

Is it any more amazing than a 747? How many people have flown to useful destinations in a 747? Ah, the commonplace we ignore, eh?

Dave, that's a lot of scripts.

How can you tell if a shuttle has been to L.A.? It's covered in graffiti.

2012-09-23 06:54:17 PM
I've always been disturbed by the amount of buttons on the shuttle. It seems like we should have been able to automate some things so there wasn't oh... an entire freakin ceiling of buttons and switches !?
