"I'm not mad at him," the driver, Manuel Velasco, said of the his chance passenger. "He was always respectful. He didn't even change the radio."

WTF ?

Yeah, you'd think that would have been his first clue something was not right.

Even Mickey from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure told Pee-Wee to turn off the radio. Of course, they were talking about him on the radio. Speaking of which ...

What, is it common practice to change the station in someone else's car? I can't imagine anything ruder.

/when I'm in the driver's seat, I'm the farking captain -- you touch the radio, you walk the plank

Well to be fair, it is hard to change the radio with a hook for a hand.

surprised no one has mentioned the radio.

I guess people on the run develop manners.
This guy's wife will never let him forget this.

"Now I know you can't trust everyone," he said.

I think the clue bat just found a hit.

Wonder what the guy they left behind was running from.

From what I can tell, the driver just wanted to help somebody in need. Either that or he wanted some road head.

This kinda chilled me:

(FTFA) "Authorities in Jefferson County, Tenn., said the passenger had been indicted on murder charges in the death of Johnny Arwood, a 47-year-old acquaintance who used to let Kelley sleep on his couch at his mobile home. Arwood was killed in White Pine, Tenn., in May, but officials wouldn't say how.

Seems it's not safe to help this guy out. Truck driver may have dodged a bullet as well as the tollbooth...

When ever I give someone a ride, someone who doesn't already know my rules about the stereo, there's at least a 75% chance that before the ride is over they will have attempted to change the music.

So I can see how he'd be impressed at a passenger who is well mannered enough to not fiddle with it.

I've heard it said, after I tell them "NO!", that rules of the road are that whoever rides shotgun has control of the radio. Fark that noise.

I have the habit of asking if I can fix clocks that are way off in cars. It bothers me.

But I always ask first.

Hitchhiking thread? Ok, well.

This guy I knew recently hitchhiked from San Diego all the way to Seattle. I have a friend who lives up there, and he had coffee with said hitchhiker. 'twas pretty crazy.

A trucker picked up a murderer. Was the "ironic" tag chopped up in little pieces in the sleeper cab?

Well, we don't have a "stereotype" tag.

Although god knows we need one sometimes.

I've picked up only two hitch-hikers in the last 25 years: The first one, I later found out was an escaped convict who I read about in the paper and realized I was the one who drove him 90 miles to safety! The police caught him about 700 miles from the prison but couldn't figure out how he made it the first 90.

The second appeared to be a girl in distress and ended up to be a male hooker high on drugs - I never knew the definition of skank until he got in my truck. I wanted to wash the truck out with a fire hose!

Not buying the truckers story.

The real story is he probably had hot and heavy anal pounding with the hitchhiker. This is all a cover.

CSB:
Used to pick up hitchhikers as a youngling (i.e., before there were cell phones)- figured I might need a ride sometime so it would be good to have that on the 'good' side of the karma ledger.

Was driving somewhere with my mom one time when the car ran out of gas (broken gas gauge and I hadn't correctly estimated the amount of gas in the tank with the 'bump car and listen to the slosh' method).
Mom was all "OK genius, now what do we do?" since OF COURSE I didn't have AAA at the time.

I wasn't upset; there was a gas can in the truck and I had two thumbs so...
"Don't worry, Mom, we just hitch a ride."
Mom was not completely on board with this idea (read: "Are you out of your MIND?"). I tried to reassure her:
"Don't worry, Mom. My road-karma's good. I pick up hitchhikers all the time!"
For some reason, this did not make my mom feel any better.

Still...about 5 minutes after displaying the thumbs, we got a ride both to and from a gas station from a very nice gentleman.
Seemed he had similar ideas about 'road karma' as he'd had to stick out the thumb a time or three...

/CSB

Kids...probably not a good idea to try this at home anymore.
