FTFA: Facebook's ongoing war on pseudonyms is well-documented. The company wants everyone to use their real name on the social network, and ideally this would be their only identity on the Internet.

This will NEVER happen. Ever. Anyone working at Facebook who thinks it will, deserves to be fired.

bubo_sibiricus: TsukasaK: Jesus, poison the well much?

Then let's go with what just happened in Syria.

The government was using FB and Twitter to find out who was circulating information, getting their real names, going to their houses, and shooting them.

Anonymity is a right. It is an *important* right.

a government can just go to the ISP for use history. there is no hiding unless one puts effort into it.

TsukasaK: Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: You could NOT use the product. That's an option.

Absolutely not! It's my god given farking RIGHT to use whatever name I want on a private website, nevermind what I promised I would do.

/agreed though
//don't like the rules of the party, don't join
///personal responsibility, what a novel concept!

Yup. I left in January 2009 when Facebook updated their privacy and security policies (did the full removal - deleting pics, untagging things, removing comments and uploads, then doing the complete account removal and sent a letter requesting the database be updated to reflect my leaving). So, I don't agree to their terms of use and don't use Facebook. I was not cool with Facebook before it was cool.

TsukasaK: 12349876: It's only "fallacious" when you don't know the difference between bad and illegal.

Bad? One could make an argument that signing up with a website that basically says "Yeah, you have to use your real name here, is that a problem?" and you respond to that with "No problem, I'll make sure to do that!" would be "Bad". It makes you a farking liar if nothing else.

There's a difference between saying "I think Facebook is bad because you can't be anonymous" and "I think Facebook should be forced to let you use it anonymously" or "I think Facebook should be shut down because you can't use it anonymously" and you were not distinguishing between the two when you made your comment...

TsukasaK: Because the USA is exactly like a tinpot dictatorship, and because you have the *right* of anonymity on a private service.

Ah k - I wasn't being clear then, my bad.

What I mean is, if Facebook bothers you that bad, spare the calling them evil and whatnot, either leave or stop whining. This sanctimonious pearl clutching every time they try to enforce the existing rules is just silly.

stonicus: RoyBatty: Apos: And I want a three way with Bar Refaeli and Erin Heatherton.

Both scenarios have the same chances of resounding success.

Well, one of the answers is "I don't want to tell you", which sounds to me like Facebook will certainly interpret several of those answers regarding your facebook alt as a "no".

This is why my facebook alts have no friends. (Not an explanation for why my real alt has no friends :( )

And yes, I got some facebook alts at the same time they started allowing facebook to be used as a general web commenting system.

How soon before they send you a message "you've made no friends in several months. We're deleting your account."

I'm almost positive something like that already exists.

I note that on some sites when I comment with facebook using an alt with no friends (lonely forever) the comments are never published. I've wondered if the commenting api allows the site to take that into account.

2012-09-22 06:15:35 PM
wouldn't this whole scheme backfire ? I mean, most of FB's valuation is based on it's hugely inflated user count, which is from all the derelict fake accounts and people having 5 or more accounts on there. If they want to drop to "one account per real non-anonymous user" then they are really asking to have 800 million turn back into 40 million.

you think their valuation has dropped already..... just you wait.

I'm guessing new social media sites are already being created.

My facebook alt is the name of a really cranky asshole from the twilight zone who got what he deserved by late afternoon. I thought I was being oh so clever and then found it's actually a somewhat common facebook alt as facebook alts go. And I've been wondering for months now if I'm growing into that guy.

hmm, now, I'm never quite sure when a company has paid posters.....

there is a difference between when the state asks you to turn in your fellow citizens hiding something, and when a company asks its users to turn in their friends that are hiding something.

Would you like to coin a different term for this type of behavior ? We are talking about something more than just users violating the terms of service. Do you understand what is different here ? Would you like a map ?

I used to have a facebook acct under my real name. Then I was "discovered" by an old friend from way back. I was initially happy to connect with her again, then swiftly discovered she is now a total nutbag who disapproves of and belittles everything I believe in and value. I unfriended her. THEN I had a run-in with a family member, and in disgust, unfriended everyone... then looking at my blank friend list, walked away and let my"real" self die. Now I am on under an assumed name, which my VERY small list of friends and SOME family know, and I am able to keep up with my chosen far-flung family, some in the military on deployment, where facebook remains one of the most popular ways to connect with home and family. If any of you are reading this, I will cut you to pieces if you out me!!
Damn facebook--- useful sometimes, disgusting waste of time, provides an easy way to keep up with family doings, exposes everyone to stalkers. Zuckenberg deserves whatever awaits him.

The standards for evil sure have fallen. It used to be you had to be a mass murderer, or a serial rapist, or something like that. Nowadays? Build a website and enforce rules on it people don't like. Boom, evil. Right up there along with the big H himself. Don't even have to get up from your couch if you do it right.

accounts? I dunno, 4 to 8

with my name or any information about me or any pictures ? 0

It has been about 2 years since I logged into FB. I used to care enough about comment boards and stuff that I'd create a FB account with fake info to comment, then forget the account. Then I stopped caring about comment areas that required FB. If it was FB I'd just leave.

Then Mark Z sold this counting to suckers.

So why bother with fake FB profiles anyway? I can only think of a few reasons:

1) You're screwing around on a spouse/significant other.

2) You're playing Farmville or its equivalent and want nothing else to do with FB.

3) It's a throwaway login like a one use email address for media that have FB functionality.

4) You're using social media for pranks, stalking, or taunting the police anonymously (probably not the smartest choice you could make).

Have I left anything out?

2012-09-22 09:52:04 PM
Hmmm. I wonder if any of my friends report me (no effing way I'm using my real name on any 'social media'). The day that happens is the day I ditch FB.

Only use it to keep in touch with family.
