Do you ever get the feeling that if Sarah Silverman had been born a male the apex of her (well, his) comedy career would have been "funniest guy in the fraternity house"?

If the state ID is free, that would pass constitutional muster. If you have to pay out to get an acceptable ID, it is an unconstitutional poll tax. That's why some states have workable voter ID laws and some get tossed by the courts.

It's informative while still being irreverent. I still don't find her all that funny. She's a lot like Daniel Tosh - she makes me laugh in the same way getting hit in the head with a hammer would make me bleed. When you overwhelm the audience with outlandishness, something will make you laugh but it doesn't mean you're funny.

But make no mistake, if Mrs. Z allowed it, I'd tap dat ass with fury.

here's what I don't like about them.

1. the timing. they made these laws in some of the states with very little time for those people who need to get them to do so. or even be notified that they would need them.

2. they made them hard to obtain because they want several pieces of identification to get them. I've been driving in Ga for 40 yrs and I had to go get a raised seal copy of my birth certificate (I had lost my original and all I had was a photocopy of the hospital birth record) and I had to have 2 utility bills with my name and address on them (I went paperless and do all my stuff online years ago) so I had to change that and then wait on the bills and my social security card. some people don't have their utilities in their name but in another family member's name and that would make it even tougher on them. and some states even try to charge for the i.d.s even going as far as firing employees at the DMV who voluntarily tell the citizens that they're free if they're just for voting.

3. there's no voter fraud going on that these measures would stop. it's a lie. it's a solution to nothing because it's not a problem.

if they had allowed enough time and made the state make sure that everyone had one before implementing the statute then I'd have no real problem with it. but no they implemented it and didn't even aloow time for the courts to review it much less allow everyone to get the new i.d. Our statute just went into affect in July. only those who needed to renew their license between july and elections day would have run into the new laws. the state itself never sent out any notification to me that I might not be able to vote using my old license,.

Interesting how voting machine irregularities (hardware/software failures, voting officials' errors, database issues, other general malfunctions and hinkyness) have affected far more voters and caused far more election time fraud/miscounts than any supposed voter fraud from IDless voters over the past few elections, and yet 21 states have mustered up these voter ID laws. Are there even that many that require paper trails from their voting machines and independently verified certification of the hardware and software of the machines?

In some places, the only office to obtain the ID is located in some out-of-the-way place that can only be accessed by car (i.e., no public transportation) and is opened from noon to 3PM every other Wednesday and 1PM to 2:30PM every third Thursday of the month. And there's one person manning the whole thing who walks like Tim Conway's character. Basically, the GOP is trying to set up an extra step to enable one to vote and then make it virtually impossible to complete that extra step.

1. It takes all day. Combining the DMV long-line experience with the necessary paperwork (they've made it harder) GETTING to the nearest DMV (DMVs in democrat districts keep getting closed down) and probably having to go more than once when you turn out to not have the necessary documentation? It's at least a day wasted, that gets some people fired.

2. It's expensive. Traveling to another county plus missing a day's work plus having to pay for the license and paperwork to GET the license (It's only "free" if you know the game) plus day-care is going to run around the cost of a week worth of food.

3. It doesn't matter. This legislation has been proven beyond reasonable doubt to be aimed at suppressing votes to manipulate elections. The law was invented as a form of election fraud, that is reason enough to call it a bad law.

I know of at least one liquor store that rejects state ID cards, saying that they have to see a driver's license and nothing else will do. Presumably some of the blue-haired senile ladies working the polling places might say the same thing; I have had one of them tell me that registering to vote at the DMV wasn't really registering.

Then their was that poor lady who couldn't get a state-issued ID because, even though she had her original birth certificate, she couldn't find all three of her marriage certificates spanning seventy-some years.

A lot of older people aren't well documented. My own grandmother was born at home and never had a social security number. She was already married when the government started issuing them, and only working men needed to get them back then.

- "Oh yes, well as soon as I heard I went straight round to see them, yesterday afternoon. You hadn't exactly gone out of your way to call attention to them, had you? I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything."
- "But the laws were on display ..."
- "On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them."
- "That's the display department."
- "With a flashlight."
- "Ah, well the lights had probably gone."
- "So had the stairs."
- "But look, you found the notice didn't you?"
- "Yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'."

Oh and I bet she'll steal your phone and send scat porn to your parents.

/seriously...I'm asking.
//agree with 90% of what she said.

here's what I don't like about them.

1. the timing. they made these laws in some of the states with very little time for those people who need to get them to do so. or even be notified that they would need them.

2. they made them hard to obtain because they want several pieces of identification to get them.

#2 was my problem... no birth certificate (lost years ago, never needed it since), paperless bills, expired driver's license. After my divorce, I discovered that the bus was a hell of a lot cheaper than maintenance/fuel/insurance/taxes on a car, so I never bothered to renew my license.

I needed an ID to fill a prescription, and ended up having to ask a friend to pick it up for me. Strangely, they didn't care that his name wasn't on the prescription, just that he had a valid ID.

I have a state ID now. In the end, I got three copies of my birth certificate. The first was faxed (denied, no raised seal). I requested another, and received a simple photocopy in the mail despite stating that it needed a raised seal. The third was finally correct, received more than a month after I made the initial request. It took more than 2 months to get physical copies of my bills... The first change in billing method for my electric bill "didn't go through", and then in the next month my neighbor's drunken party guests once again ran over my mailbox (happens 2 or 3 times a year).

/and I don't even need an ID to vote.

It's more than a little alarming that lots of old folks still believe in the GOP, even after they touched the "third rail." OTOH, since they're already old and any changes won't affect them, the old "got mine, fark you" mentality comes into play. This allows them to vote the way FOX and am radio tells them while still retaining the idea that it's in their best interests.

Oh no, what I meant is that the proposals we've seen from the right don't affect current seniors - a majority of whom depend on that income to make ends meet. That those proposals impact only those under 55 (IIRC) means they can vote for the flag pin and Jesus without guilt.

Something they haven't paid much attention to - Medicaid - does screw over current elderly folks.

It's the major way we Americans finance long-term (nursing home) care. Medicare doesn't cover that. Usually what happens is if an old person needs to live in a nursing home, they go live there until they've spent all their money and assets, then they qualify for Medicaid, which does cover it.

Ryan's plan to block-grant Medicaid is also a 1/3 cut to it, and end Federal requirements on who must be eligible. That would certainly result in a bunch of elderly folks getting kicked out of nursing homes.

2012-09-22 09:10:08 PM
My mandatory contributions to voter ID threads:

1) If there's a requirement the address on the ID match the voting address, the purpose is to disenfranchise people who move a lot (renters) and college students. It doesn't add any security - the address you give DMV isn't any more secure or verified than the address you give the Board of Elections.

I run a polling place in NC, where we don't require ID (yet - I'm sure we will next year when both the governor and legislature are Republican). But my experience is that most of the people who show up who've moved and not updated their voter registration haven't updated their licenses either.

2) Someone will always "hurr durr how do we know there's no impersonation if they don't require ID?" The answer: we track who has voted, and that's public record (HOW they voted is not, of course - it's not even possible to tell how they voted if they voted on Election Day). This also prevents the same voter (registration) from voting twice in the same election.

If there was some epidemic of people impersonating registered voters, there'd be an equal and opposite epidemic of people getting busted appearing to vote twice, and/or a bunch of people showing up on the list of "who voted" who didn't.

I am absolutely surprised that every one of these Voter ID laws have not been tossed. All a judge really should be asking is "What is the legislative intent?" The intent is unambiguously voter suppression for one party.

Then how exactly are you going to just get in your car and drive to the closest polling place which is hours away?

Would it really take that much time to get to a polling place? Aren't they supposed to be close to where the voters live?

tenpoundsofcheese: what a racist fark she is.

Voter ID laws are targeting black people...ohhh, the race card.

How about 0bama's economic policies are targeting black people since they have a much higher unemployment rate than average?

The pdf in this article (the blue "reported" link at the bottom) shows blacks have a disproportionately lower percentage of IDs, along with poorer/older people.

When you overwhelm the audience with outlandishness, something will make you laugh but it doesn't mean you're funny.

But make no mistake, if Mrs. Z allowed it, I'd tap dat ass with fury.

Paul Baumer: They do if they are Negroes, apparently, or so I've been told. And they are all on welfare but have flat screens and 22" spinners too./

The thing is, pretty much all tvs are flatscreen now, and buying a tv is less than a car. Also, there's a lot of renting going on, both for tvs and spinners. There are three car accessory rental places within a mile of my house, and places like that and USA Rental ect. are all out there screwing these people left and right, since the interest and high rental fees wind up costing the poors who rent or rent-to-own way more than just saving and buying outright would have, But most of those places don't do credit checks because they are trying to trap these people into a bad agreement, and they have a lot of repo men at their disposal.

It's hard to manage when your credit sucks ass and your choices are so limited. Me and my husband are crawling tooth and nail out of the poorer end of things ourselves, but we've got a lot of credit issues to fix as we go. It's going to be a long slog out of the mud. Though the only welfare either one of us has ever used is food stamps, both around the same time when we first met. I was in a household, and we had gotten them together to help us pay for food, and he was on his own getting a $50 EBT card a month, which doesn't really help all that much. After a year, when we all moved out of county, we didn't bother to go apply again. But it did help a lot when we were all trying to get better employment, and we could eat a bit healthier and not be so worried that we wouldn't have money to buy food after rent and bills sucked everything away.
