I bet they would find a lot of turtle takers around some Chinese restarants.

2012-09-22 03:04:45 PM
Is there a reason they can't let everything but the parrot loose near a pond?

2012-09-22 03:04:47 PM
There's this place you could take them where a lot of turtles live.

It's called "outside".

I'm leaving in 26 minutes (not kidding) to go deliver three rescued turtles to their new home, so I'm getting a kick, etc.

Or Cajun restaurants. Turtle soup is quite popular, at least in Louisiana.

Good work and I'm glad it worked out, but I have to ask: couldn't they just have been dropped off to a few ponds or lakes?

Seriously?*facepalm*

Why not turn any animal loose in the wild, without regard of where it came from, pretty sure throwing a hamster or pirahna out into the wilderness is pretty obvious as to why not, use the same logic.

not all turtles are water turtles, not all turtles are from the same climate/geographical region, and introducing invasive(non-native) species is usually illegal, not to mention any diseases the "pet" turtle may have/be an asymptomatic carrier of could destroy native populations. It may not be able to find food(especially non native species).

I once released a mouse into the wild. Just a plain old ordinary mouse. Let it go out by an old stone wall on our property. The next day it was still running back and forth along the wall, unable to find any place to hide. It had no idea where to go or how to find food that wasn't in a dish. The cat got it later that day, alas. Which is why I generally believe in killing any exotic animal you can't care for any longer. And by "exotic" I mean any animal that wasn't wild before you thought letting it go would be a good idea.

Ah. I missed the part where it said they were "exotic". I thought they were just turtles this guy caught/bred. You know ordinary, local, non-invasive turtles. But thanks for the facepalm, dick.

Yeah, they're obviously just plain old box turtles. Can you even buy those things as pets? Those suckers are all over the road back home at certain parts of the year, often flat. We used to catch them all the time. We got a mind to keep one once, and he would have been such a pain in the rear to keep. You have to provide a hibernation spot for them, and stop feeding them beforehand so their food doesn't rot in their digestive tract, and then you basically don't have a pet for a few months. We let him go.

If the info that we got back then was accurate, those guys will stand a much better chance in wild than in a new home. Not in a pond, though. They don't really do ponds.

Its ridiculous they're trying to find these things homes.
