There is something not right with this story. He wasn't in it for the money and he obviously wanted to get caught. If I were the cops I'd be really picky about where I send him from here.

So when a citizen turns in the $1000 they got from the robber, the police will bring the $500 to the precinct where the $100 will be secured in the evidence room.

Can someone explain to me the laws around someone obtaining stolen money?

If someone steals the specific $10 bill in my left pocket; then later that day they go to a store and spend my $10 bill to buy a hot dog - what claim, if any, can I make for that specific $10 bill sitting in the store's register?
