James F. Campbell: Who gives a shiat about high school? What is this fascination with the early years? There's so much to do, learn, and experience as an adult -- is your life really so empty and petty that you're forever trying to recapture your high school years? Jesus Christ.

Adult life can be and is wonderful. When you are a teenager, a year feels like it lasts forever. You are innocent, you don't think about finances, careers, death, etc. It is only about superficial things that can be great and also horrible. Dwelling on a lingering look from a crush, lasting for weeks, can mean memories for the rest of your life. The infinite similar situations that define that feeling resonates with most for the rest of their lives. This is because we were young and stupid, and it was great.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High was 100 times the movie The Breakfast Club was. Just the teachers were better characters than the Breakfast Club kids. Mr. Vargas and Mr. Hand were legendary. Sean Penn was actually likeable, Jennifer Jason Leigh was cute and awesome, and Pheobe Cates was at her best. All of the characters were real feeling.

Except for the part where the Breakfast Club in zero ways represents real high school life, yeah, it's totally the pinnacle of high school experience.

The Breakfast Club is to real high school as Animal House is to real college.

Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: Does Boyz n the Hood not count because it's not about upper-middle class white people?

I don't remember Boyz n the Hood being about high school so much about live in the ghetto in general.

I enjoyed summer school with Mark Harmon.

Ages 21 - 25 trump high school years, at least in my experience.

Where is "The Lost Boys" or "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure"?

Three of "The Goonies" were in high school, so does that count?

Mugato: I never got the love for The Breakfast Club. The cool goth girl redeems herself by transforming into the obedient prom queen and everyone else is just a collection of douchebags. Dazed and Confused and American Graffiti though, that was a good call.

I kind of saw it the other way. The whole wearing black, being silent and covering her face with her hair was her way of hiding and trying not to be noticed. I do think the makeover was a bit much, but the idea was to get her out of her shell instead of hiding by looking like Robert Smith.

Other than that, I agree that they were huge douchebags, especially Bender. I knew a few guys like that in middle and high school. They acted like they were tough as sh*t, but pussied out when you pushed back.

downstairs: I'm pretty OK with this list, but Hoop Dreams should have been much higher.

When I think of a "high school movie", I think of films of generally less quality and certainly of less importance than Hoop Dreams. If anything, I wished they never included it.

Hoop Dreams is one of the finest documentaries ever made, and to throw it in with a collection of amusing but ultimately disposable films that prey on everyone's tendency to romanticize a certain era in our lives seems like disservice to it.

To Sir with Love should be higher, way higher. To remind you young ones, in 1967 when this film came out, interracial marriage was still illegal in 27 states and the civil rights act just beginning to be enforced. So to see a movie depicting an African Brit portrayed as succeeding where white predecessors had failed was awesomely inspiring.

The collection of douchebags thing is spot-on. The goth girl becoming the obedient prom queen is more like wish fulfillment for the goth girls, though.

Dazed and Confused is my favorite. In the early 80s I hung out with every one of those characters in small town Indiana. Still, that's a pretty good list that goes through a few genres. Glad to see Carrie and Heathers on there. Also, a high five to whoever said "Three O'Clock High".

Ah, Breakfast Club. That film solidified what all tortured youth have been saying for eons--If you are a burnout with an abusive father, you can redeem yourself by impregnating empty headed high society types with bright boring futures and abusing the resulting children, adding to the vicious cycle of child abuse and alcoholic despair. If you are a closeted homosexual jock with anger issues, you might be able to become president, as long as you can shatter plate glass with your voice. Feeling out of place? Handling the awkward twists and turns of adolescence by acting out and not bathing? You can marry a closeted homo with anger issues, and if you're lucky, he will turn you into a Callista Gingrich and there will be no regrets. Put on lipstick now. And as for the well-intentioned yet put upon and depressed brainiac who doesn't know his own potential and wishes his parents would stop harping on it--You get nothing. Sit your ass down and do our homework.

Truly, the film of a generation.
