rickycal78: Bashar and Asma's Infinite Playlist: Does Boyz n the Hood not count because it's not about upper-middle class white people?

I don't remember Boyz n the Hood being about high school so much about live life in the ghetto in general.

FTFM

/goddamn preview, how the hell does it work?

Well it did show the "high school experience" pretty well for that part of the country. The one kid that stayed in school and tried to make it into college on scholarship ended up dead, and everybody else pissed away their teenage years as gang members with no prospects for the future.

Absent from the list:

Superbad

thamike: I Like Bread: I can't say I've ever related to a high school movie.

Not even Basketball Diaries or Kids?

no directed to me, but Kids seemed like a movie made by an adult who read horrible things about what 90s-ish kids were doing and made a movie based off those stories. As a teen in the 90s, it kind of felt like the equivalent of an email forward about Obama being a socialist, albeit with a grain of truth in the subject matter. But yeah, mostly a bullshiat movie.

FuryOfFirestorm: Wonderful was basically a gender-swapped Pretty In Pink.

Except they got the ending right.

1. Degrassi High (not the recent stuff)
2. Freaks and Geeks
3. The Wonder Years
4. The Inbetweeners (the tv show, not their movie)

IIRC, Hughes originally shot an ending where Andie chooses Ducky over Blaine, but test audiences didn't like it, mostly because they felt that Ducky was more like a brother to her ( and because Ducky was gay, of course). So Hughes later filmed the ending it has now - after Andrew McCarthy shaved his head for another role, requiring him to wear a wig (which is why his hair looks so bad at the end).

I'd add Reckless from the 80s, and agree Pump Up the Volume should be on there somewhere.

PacManDreaming: Dazed and Confused should've been first place. It totally reminds me of the years I spent in high school in the small, rural Texas town I grew up in. For your humor, here are some photos from the Homecoming Parade, sometime in the early '80s:

Go a few towns further west, today, and you'd think you were in Dazed and Confused.

That Mott's looks very familiar.

Go Hornets?

Rincewind53: Except for the part where the Breakfast Club in zero ways represents real high school life, yeah, it's totally the pinnacle of high school experience.

The Breakfast Club is to real high school as Animal House is to real college.

Yes, the characters were exaggerated for dramatic effect, and the ending was stupid, but it did portray the high school cliques of the early 80's very well. At least the kids acted like kids and weren't precocious.

Mugato: I never got the love for The Breakfast Club. The cool goth girl redeems herself by transforming into the obedient prom queen and everyone else is just a collection of douchebags. Dazed and Confused and American Graffiti though, that was a good call.

We see up Molly Ringwald's skirt!

James F. Campbell: Who gives a shiat about high school? What is this fascination with the early years? There's so much to do, learn, and experience as an adult -- is your life really so empty and petty that you're forever trying to recapture your high school years? Jesus Christ.

Adult life can be and is wonderful. When you are a teenager, a year feels like it lasts forever. You are innocent, you don't think about finances, careers, death, etc. It is only about superficial things that can be great and also horrible. Dwelling on a lingering look from a crush, lasting for weeks, can mean memories for the rest of your life. The infinite similar situations that define that feeling resonates with most for the rest of their lives. This is because we were young and stupid, and it was great.

Porous Horace: Class of 1984.

How this was left off of the list is beyond me. It's one of the first movies that I thought of!

You must have been in some weird little school in the middle of nowhere, or not in school in the 80s, because it almost perfectly represented high school life in my neck of the woods.

Or maybe you were one of the preps and just didn't see how clique-ified you were.

"You didn't touch him, did you Jer?"

Even though it was a spoof of old westerns, that film was more accurate than most about the trials and tribulations of high school.

List fails without Over The Edge. Amazing film that captured the gritiness, drinking, drug abuse, sex, and violence of high school far better than Dazed and Confused.

Big influence on Kurt Contain.

BTW - "Not Another Teen Movie" belongs on the list.

He is a director now, and he was told about a band that sang a song about the Karate Kid movie, and he offered to be in and direct a video about it. Called Sweep the Leg.

It has the entire Kobra Kai crew in it old re watching the fight scene reminiscing in the video, and even macchio is in the video. Great stuff, and he is still in great shape.

Yep. Pretty much how high school was for me -- other than the movie took place 180 miles south of here.

I graduated in 1998 and I have to say that Can't Hardly Wait totally nailed that era. My high school years were basically Can't Hardly Wait, Dazed and Confused, and Breakfast Club all rolled into one.

It was cool to see Mr. Belding at the beginning of that video. Zabka with a mustache resembles Larry Bird and Ralph looks like he hasn't aged a day.
