Jamdug!: I can barely remember RadioShack.
maxheck: redsquid:Around this point Radio Shack went to hell. I grew up tinkering and Rat Shack was the only place to get parts and electrical gizmos. They also hired the kind of people who could answer questions and help you find solutions. Thet stedily turned their back on their core customer base and became a cel phone store with sales people who didn't know a resistor from a transistor. Now that hacking and DIY making has become popular they are trying to get that crowd back but they no longer have the selection to meet our needs. I still go there to buy things if I'm in a hurry but I do most of my purchasing online. Radio Shack can EABOD.Yeah, but at least for me that was also around the time I discovered you could get stuff out of catalogs from Jameco, Digikey, Mouser, Hamilton Avnet etc. for about 1/10th what Radio Shack charged.
Close2TheEdge: //Went to a garage sale today and picked up a sweet Pioneer LaserDisc player for $10 along with a copy of the Animated Star Trek on LD.
LeroyB: Don't laugh. Before 1989 you couldn't carry a phone around with you. If you could afford to have a phone in your car, the part you talk into was in front while the rest of the phone took up lots of trunk space.I'm sure in twenty years we will all find today's awesome phones stupid and clumsy. "Ha! Back in 2012 people actually used to send text messages to each other by typing on a virtual keyboard!"
Micanope: If I-phones had batteries that size, maybe they would last more than 15 minutes. If they had a strap and a handset, maye they could survive a drop of more than 2 feet.
Close2TheEdge: Oh ha, ha. Old technology is so funny!fark YOU SUBBY. Without this goofy ginormous cellphone, you would never have your IPhone 5 today.//Went to a garage sale today and picked up a sweet Pioneer LaserDisc player for $10 along with a copy of the Animated Star Trek on LD.
