I'm not entirely fluent with LGBT vocabulary but isn't it offensive to refer to him as a "transgender woman"? Isn't it more polite to refer to them by the gender they refer to themselves as?

Since this person lives as a man during the day, and is dressing mostly for sexual gratification, "transvestite" would be the word. In general though, amongst the transgendered, there's quite a bit of understanding when people interchange the terms "transsexual", "transgendered", etc. provided it's in good faith. When people start using words like "trap" and "she-male", that's when it starts to seem pretty derogatory.

well I guess it depends a little on the context, but anytime I've ever seen/heard someone refer to someone as a "trap", it's invariably seemed dehumanizing.

It would be like saying. "What's derogatory about calling a Japanese person a 'Jap' ?" -perhaps there's no specific insult attached to it, but it does kinda give off a bit of a douche vibe, wouldn't you agree?

If anything it's complimentary. Trap is used to indicate that you'd swear it had a vagina.

bhcompy: If anything it's complimentary. Trap is used to indicate that you'd swear it had a vagina.

Generally I associate it with that hilLARious (groan) meme where Admiral Ackbar is saying "It's a trap" and the image is applied to threads related to a trans person -mainly because it reduces the person's pronoun to the non-human status of an "it" or a thing, to be mocked rather than a human.

Second, it implies that anyone who is interested in such a person sexually is being "trapped" into it -as if no one could possibly have an honest interest in such a person. which is not the case -plenty of dudes are interested in TG's not despite, but in fact because of their gender-bending thing (even if they'd never admit it.)

But like I said, context matters, as long as you're not deliberately being a dick, it's cool. I'm just sayin': 9 times out of 10, when I see the word "trap" being used, there's a certain amount of deliberate doucheyness goin' on.

So yeah, sometimes it's cool.

To be fair, it goes the other way too.. you know, like in Croc Dundee. Girl comes on to him, he doesn't know that it's a dude until he's told. Trapped in the sense of being deceived. That doesn't imply that there aren't people that like chicks with dicks, it's indicating dishonesty on the bait and switch, as it were

I don't know the scene.
And yeah, there's a point where if a transgendered person doesn't disclose then they're being dishonest, but at the point of just meeting and flirting a bit at a bar? no. I don't see any reason why somebody should have go around with flashing lights and a sign around their neck saying "I was born with a dick."

Barney Stinson: I can't stop thinking about you. Please give me another chance.
Professor Lewis: Barney, I teach all day. It's the last thing I wanna do when I get home.
Barney Stinson: But you don't understand. See, I've been going easy on you. Holding back 'cause I was afraid you'd break a hip or something. This time, no mercy. I don't care how long it takes, days, weeks, half a year.
Professor Lewis: Fine, come in. You can start while I finish grading some papers.

He starts getting hit on, and his friend tells him it's a dude. So Mick reaches out and grabs the girl/guy's crotch and figures out it's a man. "That was a guy. A guy dressed up like a Sheila. Hey, you all knew, you pack of bastards."

In that scenario, yeah Mick was being deceived. But in just a general conversation with someone at a bar, yeah, I agree with you, no advertisement of your likes or desires or fetishes are needed.

Movie trivia, the two characters that Mick gave the sheila test to, were both played by real women.
