IIRC, they sold CBS the show back in '57 or '58 to finance buying the old RKO Studios lot, so they could have a place to produce all their shows... which would eventually include The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Star Trek.

Of course, by the time of Star Trek, Desi was gone, Desilu was a shadow of its former self, and Lucy sold out to Paramount... which would eventually become partnered with CBS though Viacom, so in the end, CBS wound up owning everything Desilu

It's amazing how this show just keeps on going. I would say it's (arguably) the most successful TV show of all time, all things considered.

Actually, subby, if an ILL reboot was done these days, it would be Emma Stone and Colin Farrell playing Lucy and Ricky, with Alfre Woodard and Michael Chiklis playing Ethel and Fred. Little Ricky would be played by the baby who does the E-Trade commercials.

I dunno, $4 million was worth a lot more back then, and afterwards they didn't have to pay an army of lawyers and accountants to ensure the studio wasn't screwing them out of royalties.

The studio is probably still charging the production 24% APR for the original financing, so no chance....

One of the big differences between the US and the UK, in the UK there are lots of indie producers making TV shows. Indies who own the rights and get the royalties for decades to come. In the US all TV is made by the big studios, with purely vanity tags like Bad Robot or Mutant Enemy that don't actually own the shows. Even hit BBC shows like Merlin, Spooks, Life On Mars and Sherlock are made by indie production companies. The BBC don't own them.

I remember the first time I watched "I love Lucy". I must've been 5 years old (circa 1974 or so). After about 30 seconds of watching it, I asked my dad "Why is there so much laughing? It's not funny." I still don't understand why people go so gaga over the show. It was poorly written and the jokes were trite and the laugh tracks are FAR overdone. About the only explanation anyone has told me was when it was made, there wasn't much to laugh at, so the standards were really low.
