Quadruple Entendre:

Or maybe we find out 0webama is actually steering this God-blessed ship of a country in shark-infested waters, with farkin' oil slicks lit on fire on the surface, while being torpedoed by his own goddamned torpedomen, and still keeping it afloat.

You know what? You are correct, sir. Let us vote for the guy with oodles of "business" and "executive" experience and yet refuses to elaborate on his positions once elected, most likely because they will be identical to Obama's (center-right), yet, at the same time, won't be handing out any foodstamps for votes, that is, unless you happen to be a hungry Wall Street "entrepreneur".

You are the wizard. SHA-ZAM!

Gosling: Quadruple Entendre: So then, you've properly educated yourself on the issues of all the races on the ballot, and no possible event could occur between now and November to make you change your mind, or even withhold a vote, in any race?

I'm pretty damn sure the GOP is not suddenly going to make up for twelve years of stupid and four years of crazy in the next six weeks, and I've seen what happens to any sane-looking Republican that actually tries to be sane. I saw what happened to Joe Cao.

So... yes I have, and no it couldn't.

And we wonder why our country is torn in half.

There's your answer, folks. People who pick a team, vote for it blindly, and actively refuse to even process any information that contradicts their preconceptions.

Like, say, maybe we find out Sheriff Joe is right and 0bummer is really a ferner or maybe that Romney is actually NOT severely conservative?

Or maybe you find out that someone you favor in any of the races has a serious skeleton in their closet that comes out between now and election day.

It's not just the presidential race that's at stake. Your vote means something. Reserve it until you're fully educated. There is a LOT more to be learned between now and November about all the candidates.

Yeah, I know, that's boring, and would require taking an active interest in something of more substance than OMG RMONEY WILL STEEL YOUR MEDICAREZ! or OMG 0BAMA IS A MUSLIN!!11! There's more to the responsibility of voting than just picking a team. It's not a fkin football game.

FFS people, human beings died for your right to vote.

Meh, but something could come out about either of them after the election is over as well.

OK. Yeah, ballots arrive about three weeks before election day. You can mail in your completed ballot or return it to a ballot drop box.

Wow, Hope it gets counted.

At what point did I even suggest voting for Romney? Or for or against any candidate? Your reading skills are woefully lacking.

I suggested, foolishly apparently, that people wait a few more weeks before they turn their ballots in, because there is more at stake in an election than just the presidential race.

You think I'm casting my vote goddamned blindly? You think I can look at a plutocrat who's verbally shiat on 47% of the country (Romney), a healthcare lobbyist who as Secretary of Health and Human Services straight-up told terrorists that they could poison our food and we wouldn't find out until it was too late (Tommy Thompson), the author of the Patriot Act who voted against aid for victims of Hurricane Katrina (Jim Sensenbrenner), and the two chief architects of the Scott Walker fiasco (Joel Kleefisch and Scott Fitzgerald), and be voting BLINDLY?!

I know EXACTLY what I'm voting against all the way down the ballot, buddy boy.

I don't really have a choice but to vote early. As a resident of IN with an out of state driver's license (permanent student), I'm afraid that the voter ID laws would keep me from voting at a polling place. Fortunately, you don't have to show any ID to vote absentee!

What information are you expecting that would change the mind of any decided voter in this election?
Do you think my conservative, anti-choice, single-issue voting father is gonna change his vote over Stericycle?
Are the young radical socialists, who are to the left of both the center-right President and Schrodinger's Candidate, going to learn something that would sway them from voting for the least right-wing candidate?
The moonies are up on the mountain,
the lunatics have taken over the asylum

Here's some amazing news. Most "independents" are anything but. They like to believe they are conscious arbiters of the truth, and vote based on their logical analysis of the candidates. Reality is, they already lean one way or the other, and call themselves independent because it sounds smart and trendy.

That's not my job! I'm not a friggin politician, or a media source. I haven't decided who I am voting for in several races yet. I'm just saying, if you have the option of waiting until election day to learn all you can, take advantage of it.

That's it, not pushing you in any direction on any candidate. It's a general suggestion to everyone, on both sides, to open their minds a little bit more, and remember that there are lots of races they have to decide on in each election.

Seriously, I think you guys are assuming that I am shilling for Romney or something. I don't really think it matters much who we vote in for President, we're in deep shiat either way, and Congress is going to be deadlocked for 4 more years in any event. I don't like either option, for various reasons. But there are judges, local politicians, all kinds of different races that should matter to you, and if you look closely, you might find that a particular candidate will better reflect your positions than the one you would most readily associate with your "team".

That's all I'm sayin'.

I've lived in Oregon for 20 years and we've had vote by mail almost as long. In that time, I don't recall any serious problems with the system.

If you're concerned with the reliability of the USPS, drop your ballot off instead. I usually do (mostly because I'm too cheap to pay for postage and the drop-off location is near my house).

serial_crusher: I still don't get why they call it "early voting", and why they close it for a week before "election day". Just have "voting" open for that entire time span.

Exactly. The fact that we have a 12 hour window on a single day -- a work day no less -- to vote is completely antiquated and ridiculous.

Polls should be open for multiple days, including weekends. To help municipalities pay for the costs, let's slash some or a lot of the funding that goes to paying for political conventions and reallocating it to the costs of associated with multi-day voting. Another option is just to have mail in voting -- the federal government could provide funding to states that adopt it.

A smidge less than two-thirds are that sort. (One-third Democratic, one-third Republican.) Another 25% are pretty much "low information voters" -- although they're the least likely to even be registered to vote. They tend not to lean one way or another to even care to show up.

The last share (about one-in-eight) of "independents" are the ones the others all like to think of themselves as -- those who carefully think about the candidates and issues, and vote sometimes one way and sometimes another. But that leaves them a rare beast indeed.

I'd like to vote again but got a postcard from the Washington Secretary of State saying that I "don't appear to be registered". It was confirmed by the state voter's database.

Having lived here 20 years (at the same address), this comes as a bit of a shock -- particularly since I haven't missed voting in any previous elections. We'll have to sort this out but my guess is that my last name has a typo in it in the registration files.

Given the months and months of primaries, commercials, and the fact that the life story of every candidate from every side is covered extensively on the internet from the moment they enter the race, you're either a retard or willfully ignorant of politics if you don't know exactly who you're voting for this close from the race. They should allow instant voting the moment the candidate for both sides is known.

I was wondering when my balloy would come. Thanks! Im loving the election here in california, both candidates only make token visits once or twice, and for the most part people gotta run on the issues. Unfortunately where I live the choice will be the progressive or the uber more-progressive-than-thou. Gotta love "top-two" primaries...

I kinda like the "top two" primary for one reason: My congressman has run unopposed since I've been out here (and he's a Republican). He finally has some competition this year, from an independent candidate (who I am totally voting for).

Serious question here...what's to keep me from collecting ballots from people that don't feel like voting and mailing them all in filled out the way I want them, or worse yet following the mailman when they're being delivered and taking the ballots from an entire neighborhood and mailing those in?

I'm sure there's some sort of safeguard, I'm just curious as to how all of that works.

Have you been to Chuck's Hop Shop? If not, run - don't walk! - to the corner of 85th and 8th immediately.

Hey man, if they are handing out free beer, let me know! But if it's just a place I need to patronize, I'll get there eventually. Mrs. 404 has me working on the honey-do list. Starting clinical rotations on Monday (surgery). I won't be around much for the next year.

It's the beer snob Mecca. Maybe not free beer, exactly, but Chuck prefers not to sell you anything until you've had at least two or three samples. Also, at least one night a week (usually Friday) he has a tasting function, where a particular brewer shows off their new beers - you buy a cup for a dollar and you're good to go for the night. And the best part is that it's not a tavern. You can take your kid with you.

You have to sign the envelope, and the signature has to match the one on your registration.
