It was a shiatty mural. She got what she deserved. She went through all the work to get her art recognized but didn't bother to check and see if her art was worth recognizing in the first place. Consider it getting painted over as a protest against shiatty art.

Besides, the real artists don't bother getting permission.

I'm going to have to agree with the several posters that stated the obvious:

It's a skatepark. The mural was all bright and flowery and girly. I expected to see a pony popping out of it somewhere. Skaters aren't typically into pink and pastels. I'm sure they hated it. It was the wrong place for it. The skaters probably banded together to eliminate it.

Ok reiterating here, but it's a skate park. Perhaps less than 24 hours is mildly surprising, but exactly how long did she expect this to remain intact? Also, it looks like something I could do and that's not bragging. In conclusion, skaters aren't generally that big a fan of Lisa Frank inspired imagery.

I don't think that the artist researched the skate culture. Her mural looks like something out of a 13 year old girls middle school notebook.

And nowhere in the article does it mention the skate park users were consulted. Sounds like they just took the space back from a group trying to co-opting it.

Skating over that multicolored monstrosity would have given me vertigo. The people that painted over it probably did it to keep kids from falling down and busting their heads open. Skating by it must have had a kaleidoscope effect on you. And if she honestly expected the locals to respect it, just about anyone with any sense would have explained the folly of such thought. She choose her canvas poorly.

I really doubt that. Like someone said, this was a semi-professional job by someone who wanted to totally remove the mural. I agree that someone wanted to obliterate it; but the kind of people who would do it that way would not care if skaters fell and busted their heads open. And skaters wouldn't have done such a professional looking job. They'd have either sprayed it or, if they did cover it with gray like that, they'd have used brushes and probably different colors of gray. Like a spot-job on a graffiti cleanup.

It was some old fart who just didn't like the look of the thing. Or a young fart, but not one who cared about the well-being of the skaters, I'm guessing.

I would have agreed with you....until I looked at the mural....

It *really* isn't appropriate for a skate park. Stereotypical or not, the target demographic of skaters are not going to appreciate cartoonish birds and rainbow colors. It doesn't jive with skater culture. And this lady isn't a skater. She doesn't come to the park. Legally/technically it's a public park or whatever - but in the eyes of the kids that use it, that hang out there, that skate - they probably feel like she has no business covering the park with stuff I'd expect to see in a children's day care.

This is the park before.

Seems fine to me.

That mural was total garbage. That girl doesn't know how to draw, much less paint. There aren't any people who use that area of the park (skaters) that could possibly identify with that lame, untalented bullshiat. This is not a "troll". These are just the painful facts.

Yep, most likely.  We have some idiot down here in NOLA that does that.  We call him the "grey ghost" because until recently no one knew who was doing it.

We have a lot of beautiful grafiti murals, too.  He nails them (and many times said murals are done with the building owner's permission).  I have no issue with cleaning up gang signs or whatever, but there's a line.

My favorite was when someone tagged a building with huge red letters that said "LIVE" (I think.)  The dude just painted over the letters.  So now its a grey tag saying "LIVE".  Idiot.

Nice. A neighbor had a bit of a problem with his wall (a rather large wall he kept painting it white) to be tagged over and over again. He got so tired that he painted it again, only this time he stenciled in black bold letters "NO GRAFFITI PLEASE". Next morning, there was a tag below saying "Sorry :C".

CSB:
When I was in undergrad, I wrote for the campus paper. I published a column shiatting all over the craptacular offerings of the Fine Arts students, including one display of clay blobs leading up to a collection of broken picture frames stuffed in a clay base. Needless to say, I wasn't very popular over that side of campus (not that anybody knew who I was). About a year after that I briefly dated a Fine Arts student who told me that people put up copies of my column and told everyone else to make a point of not liking me, but that she agreed with what I'd written. The problem with legitimising crap is that it makes it harder to the real artists (the ones who can draw a face looks like an actual face) to be taken seriously.

Well, dont really care for the mural as it was myself, but kudos to her for trying to bring some art to the public. She really should have expected it in a skate park though.

She does say ITFA that she was trying to get the city to allow other graffiti in the park, which I've seen some other locales do and is usually a pretty cool thing.

Mob mentality usually has a Darwinian effect on the art when that happens - really interesting and talented stuff survives since even really dickish taggers will usually leave it alone, if for no other reason that they dont want their scrawny butts beaten black and blue by the rest of the skaters who like the art and will probably have a good idea of who messed it up.
