Pretty messed up. This is why occasional external auditing is important in any organization. It's not just for corporations. And this isn't the first time it's happened nationwide. Interesting though that in bad economic conditions these people are found out.

At my HOA one guy and his wife took over the HOA for a short time (some weird drama was involved, I don't know everything) but before they could screw up the finances, the old HOA president found out they had previously been arrested for fraud.

Many years ago I worked at a community college where the comptroller skimmed off millions. She got caught and went to jail, but it gave some context to our faculty salary negotiations when the administration was claiming poverty.

The townspeople really need to compleatly shun and ostracize anybody found to be corrupt. Don't even sell them food. And put signs up everywhere. Signs that have a person diembowling themselves and text that reads "Do the right thing". Shun their families also, don't sell them food, fire them if you employ them, don't buy from them, don't even talk to them, refuse to educate their children. Until the corrupt politition does the right thing.

Suprising easy in small towns. Math is hard.

It's a good thing she's in jail. After 20 years, it's time to give someone else a chance to fleece the taxpayers.

OK, now she's been indicted so that makes it a follow up.

A court order and an agreement from Rita Crundwell to sell her possessions is why Federal Marshals are able to sell Crundwell's homes, horses and property. The list of the former Dixon comptroller's personal items is extensive. Most of the bigger items being sold are related to Crundwell's horse operation. There are Bobcats, John Deere Tractors, and several horse trailers. Horse equipment such as saddles are also for sale. 300 horses that did not sell at a web auction earlier this month are also on the list.

Federal Marshals are also selling 11 pages of personal items. The list shows benches, tables, bar stools, couches and chairs. There are also 9 televisions, several VCR's and DVD players, and washers and dryers that are up for grabs. Clothes, 7 fur coats, exercise equipment and art work featuring horses are also on the list.

14 of Crundwell's cars will be sold; they include a 2012 Chevy Silverado, a Ford Thunderbird, a Lexus, and a Hummer H2.

The part I find most interesting is that the feds are auctioning off her stuff before the trial has even started.
There is no way in hell anybody should be OK with the assets being sold at that point.

I'm willing to bet she is the one that did the audits. And I'm willing to bet that when anybody suggested that they bring in an outside entity to do audits she argued tooth and nail, probably to the point of criticizing whoever suggested it for attempting to waste taxpayer money, against it.

This is why you always bring in an outside entity to do your internal audits.

I read about this last week, they've already auctioned off all of her horses. She was known in the Okla horse circuit because of her extravagant trucks, trailers and equipment. The best of the best.

Seriously, no audits?

Audits don't always catch fraud and embezzlement.

There are a number of financial controls you're supposed to use to minimize this sort of thing. My guess is the town had zero controls.

One of the more common controls is how she got caught. You're supposed to send the people who handle the money on vacation now and then and have someone else do the work. If there's funny business - like the mystery bank account here - it often turns up.
