Congress realized they were talking about their own ethics, not normal people's.

2012-09-21 12:58:23 PM
what's the point of having an ethics committee anyways? I don't think it can do anything other than give you a slap on the wrist. and they that rarely enough in the first place.

I don't know much about this case in particular, but she is a bit nutty and we'd probably do better without her.

Interesting given her political affiliation.

The only investigations they opened against named violators in this document were against the following:
Charlie Rangel
Maxine Waters
Laura Richardson

I'm not saying these people weren't guilty of crimes. Just that these were the only people in Congress investigated - and they are all black. Considering the amount of illegal and unethical sh*t that probably goes on in that legislature, it's just a tad interesting.

FTFA: "It is abundantly clear that Rep. Waters told Mr. Moore that he should not specifically assist OneUnited," [Independent counsel] Martin testified during a rare public hearing by the panel Friday.

The investigator cleared the Congresswoman, and the Committee followed his recommendations. They should have come down harder on the chief-of-staff, though

Voters in her district would rather have a coprrupt rep who has seniority to funnel their way than a clean rep with no seniority.

We need a better system for going after these scumbags.

Issa openly admitted that he didn't have a case but was making one because of politics. Why not do the same to Waters? They must have absolutely nothing on her.

2012-09-21 02:32:44 PM
First, if the Republicans are dropping this, it's because they ain't got nothing, period.

Second, from TFA: "The Waters case has been marked by an extraordinary series of missteps, leaks and partisan infighting. The long delay in resolving the matter has damaged the panel's standing both inside and outside Congress."

Their 'standing' has been less than zero for quite a while now. Just digging a deeper hole.

If being on the supreme court and hearing a case directly involved with your own wife's lobbying group's goals isn't conflict of interest, I'm not exactly sure why this happened.

She is definitely a witch. One of the crookiest crooks in Congress.

And, if a Dem gets busted that means a Repub has to get busted too. Them's the rules. They probably want to wait and see who is going to be running the show in January.

The most interesting bit is how he deliberately skipped taking obvious deductions so that his effective tax rate would go from 13% to 14%, which I guess somehow he think that will make people like him more

Prove it. The House Ethics Committee can't. If you can, then why not let them know? I'm sure they'd love to hear about it. Or you could go to a media outlet and make a killing selling your proof to them, so they can break the news.

Didn't Romney say that if he didn't take every deduction he could that would make him unfit for office?

The acting chairman said that when Waters realized OneUnited was in serious trouble, she told then-chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., to handle any further matters in the case.

There you have it....clean as a whistle Barney Frank took care of everything.

That was for the really lean tax-paying years (i.e., before 2010). Then he flip-flopped and became Mitt Romney: Real American™.

Maxine,

You've been a congresswoman for over 20 years. Thank you for your service. Please home and get a job or retire. You are almost 75. Take it easy. Please take all the other Senators and Representatives of both parties that have served for 20 years or more with you. The country would appreciate it.

If she's bringing home money to the district, she's doin' a good job! That's how DC's Marion Barry has maintained a political life.

I remember some pundit floated the idea of everyone getting 2 votes: one traditional vote in your district, and one extra vote against any sitting Congressperson. That negative vote got included into their total so the entire country could override a districts vote. The numbers would have to be looked at, but the idea was that everyone else in the country could vote out your corrupt Congressman no matter how much support they had at home.

/not fully thought out, full of downsides and basically against the idea of federalism.

I'm just mentioning the best solution to prevent Congressional Corruption is to give them more money of the rich to spend. That's the solution to everything wrong with America.
