What I didn't get was this, FTFA: Mujica has no bank accounts and no debt, and he enjoys one thing money can't buy: the companionship of his dog, Manuela.

I'm guessing that his wife has the bank accounts? Given that she donates "part" of her salary, I have to wonder how large a part.

Anyway, the other bits, about American Presidents donating all or part of their salaries was interesting.

Actually, Herbert Hoover came from a wealthy family. His father was an international businessman who traveled all over the world, and took the family along always (only the super rich did that in late 19thC). Hoover's concern for the poor was evident when he ran the Food Aid programs after WW I...he probably save 20 million Soviets from starvation

Sounds like this Uruguayan Prez is a good guy...and practices what he preaches. The liberals in the US, on the other hand, are the worst in giving to charity

Why would anybody give their own money away? That's just stupid. You're supposed to give other peoples' money away.

Key words in article, "public servant."

That is all

"Hoover, who grew up poor, decided to never accept money for public service, so he could not be accused of corruption."

A man after my own heart.

Yeah the guy in the article was pretty cool too.

2012-09-21 03:43:59 PM
You know, they should just tax it from him since there is no difference between someone voluntarily giving their money to the poor and being forced against their will to do so. There is no way he could give that money as efficiently as the government.

Of the two, Conservatives and Liberals, Liberals do give less to charity. Additionally, religious conservatives give more than religious liberals. However, non-religious conservatives give *less* to charity than non-religious liberals.

No, that's not how it works. Especially in Latin America. See, the US will back a coup that puts an unpopular right wing dictator into power, who then privatizes everything and sells it for pennies on the dollar to corporations, who then proceed to bleed all the value out of the country's infrastructure without returning anything to the state, leaving the place a mess for decades. But by god, at least the citizens won't be living under the horrible yoke of socialism.

That's IIRC, of course. It came from Arthur C. Brooks' "Who Really Cares"

Which is exactly what we have now. The President's "salary" of $250K/year is pocket change for some of these chumps.

Poor people taste the best. They've been fattened up like waygu beef. They get plenty of food, lots of beer, are mostly sedentary so as to not make the muscles tough from hard work. You bet your ass we eat the poor. They're the tastiest. And thanks to Fartbongo there is no shortage of poor people. We're eating like kings these days.

Sure, but that's a symptom of different issues (not that they don't need fixed as well).
