They should have shut him down in April/May, like the Braves did with Medlen (into July even before he became a regular starter), so they would have him available down the stretch and into the post season.

I somehow don't think that management was really thinking playoffs this season or that would have been the obvious play.

They just clinched no worse than the opportunity to play in the Wild Card Play-In Game. If they can't nail down the Division after backsliding (and losing three to the Braves), then it's a premature celebration.

1) Season's not over yet. Clinching is good, but celebrations aren't in order until the season's over. You still have to play some games.
2) Celebrating a wild-card spot seems...silly. Yes, you made the playoffs, but there's a bit of conventional wisdom in sports that if you only look at the series ahead of you (ALDS/CS), you may run out of gas winning that one, and not have anything left for the series after. The Nats do well to remember that they have to winubianmes once the postseason starts, and not to celebrate too much until postseason win #19.
3) The players always look like goons in those champagne-shower locker rooms. Unless they just won the WS, they look like fratboy morons celebrating on Thursday night, forgetting ALLLL about the P-Chem final on Friday morning.

For fark's sake, they put starters in the bullpen in the playoffs just to squeeze a little more work out of them.

I guarantee you Strasburg is going to remember this when his contract comes due. He is not re-signing with the Nationals after this, at any price. To hell with pitch counts and inning counts. When he gets into free agency, he is going to someone that will actually play him in the playoffs.

Impossible to comprehend but who would have believed it in Baltimore in the late 90's or Toronto in 93, or Seattle in 2001. Let's not forget KC and Milwaukee in the 80's.

Even with more teams getting in there will be 5 or 6 that never make the playoffs until the next change in format.

Sometimes your shot at a title is your only shot.

You are preaching to the choir. I just meant that it would have been better if they were going to only let him pitch so many innings to start him later rather than end him early. The Braves didn't start Medlen until late in the year, but he did pitch out of the bullpen prior to that. It kept his innings down. He had the same surgery as strasburg.

Oh and Medlen's numbers are better than Strasburg's too. Like it's not even close.

I'd normally passively watch a non-Red Sox playoffs / world series, but I'd pay close attentions if The O's played the Nationals. It makes MLB seem more fair when these teams get in - though I'm not mistaking either as low-budget teams.

Strasburg has terrible mechanics that make him more prone to injury. Saw a great article on it with diagrams of how he slots his arm when throwing, and other things he does to his body that aren't good. Verlander, as far as I know, has fine mechanics.

I don't agree with how Strasburg has been handled this year, but still... he is prone to injury and should have had an inning maximum.

I thought they should have had him skip starts or pitch every 7th or 8th game during long stretches.

The point I'm making is, Verlander is doing this in an era where a manager is "ruining his pitchers" if he just lets them pitch. No one is accusing Leyland of ruining Verlander's arm, are they?
