DECMATH: No safety net for the old? WTF kind of Communism is that?
brantgoose: It's a Commie Plot! The Chinese, having noticed that the most irresistable force in the Universe is tiny Chinese grandmothers, has conspired to great a vast army of tiny Chinese grandmothers. They have the lifting power of ants (relative to their size), the arguing power of a minyan of ultra-orthodox Rabbis, and the unbearable screech of their voices when they shout at you makes ultra-macho giants turn to wobbly jellies and wet themselves.Nobody can resist a tiny Chinese grandmother, and now they have hundreds of millions of them, poised to invade the developed world and take over.Obese Chinese single children, accompanied by a bodyguard of doting, over-protective grandmothers (some with as many as nine grandmothers counting great-granies and great-great grannies), will devour everything in their path, devastating North America, Europe, Russia and Australia.Note: They won't have to invade Latin America and Africa because they already own all the land and resources in the Third World.Operation Grammie is the final phase of their plot to take over the world. The only country with the power to stop China is India, which has annoying grandparents of its own and unlike China has not even attempted to achieve zero population growth. The clash of two armies of Indian and Chinese grandparents is a sight to behold, and could make Argmageddon look like play time at an Infant Creche in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, you are unlikely to ever see it more than once.Chinese Grandmothers of the World unite! You have nothing to lose but your worthless lazy daughters-in-law!

super_grass: A communist country that has no safety net, now I've seen it all.
Harry Freakstorm: You will feed and cloth and maintain one (1) Chinese senior citizen of Apple's choosing. No take backs. No Trades.
BoxOfBees: This doesn't make any sense. How do people live that long without government assistance to pay for pharmaceuticals and housing and cable television? Surely the civilized West with its social welfare programs leads to people living longer lives?
dittybopper: super_grass: A communist country that has no safety net, now I've seen it all. They are CINOs, Communist In Name Only. So I guess they are Chinoccinos.
Lawnchair: One other little problem for Chinese manufacturing. It's mostly based on under-40s. By the time you've spent 20 years in dim lighting and repetitive motions for 7x12, you're a near-blind quivering husk. You aren't keeping up with Foxconn production speeds. Think ageism is a problem in the US? You either find something even lower paying (cooking, etc) not in the export industries or you're expected to remove yourself to your ancestral village and subsist.China hasn't just been riding a wave of under-65s, it's been riding a wave of 20-somethings that were born just after the end of the Gang of Four years. That boom ends much sooner.
Girion47: So once again old people are hampering society?
meat0918: So are we.
Spindle: Sad, sobering article. I don't get why the headline has to laugh about this situation, is this a meme that I haven't caught onto?
phojo1946: Another problem that is rapidly approaching is the result of the one child policy and that is the lack of females. As a family was only allowed one child and females were not as desirable as males, female fetuses were aborted in favor of males. Now that the children are growing up, there are going to be millions of males who cannot obtain a wife and they are going to be mighty unhappy as those hormones run thru their bodies with nowhere to do. Any suggestions, realistic ones, that is?
NutWrench: "I never thought about what would happen when I got old," he says. "My parents died of starvation. I couldn't even afford coffins for their bodies. My children grew up with no clothes. I had no money for those either."I can't afford an iPhone 5, right now. :(
