(Talking Points Memo)   I don't know which is more shocking. Seeing a Democratic nominee recommend taxing the 47% or hearing the GOP shout "ZOMG HE'S TAXING THE POOR." Is it possible to be shocked...and yet not at all surprised?   (2012.talkingpointsmemo.com) divider line 162

"Virginians heard liberal Tim Kaine loud and clear today - his solution to 43 straight months of unemployment above 8 percent is to raise taxes on everyone, regardless of their income levels or economic struggles," Brian Walsh, NRSC communications director told TPM. "Remarkable."

So let's see:

Republican Talking Point #1: "It's bad that 47% of Americans aren't paying federal income tax."
Republican Talking Point #2: "How dare you suggest that we tax the 47% of Americans that aren't paying federal income tax!"

"You can't issue comprehensive tax reform if you start shutting doors."

FARKING THIS. We can't talk about tax reform until Republicans exorcise their inner-Grover so that we can actually talk about tax reform.

2012-09-21 09:58:32 AM
Republican argument: Taxes are too low, and also, they are too high. So vote for us, and we will raise and lower taxes.

American people: But that makes no sense.

Republican: Fark you and vote for us. Bald eagle. Jesus.

American: Hmm... maybe they have a point.

The story of American politics.

Neither is really shocking. The Dems are a big tent party and there's plenty of stupid ideas floating around them.

And the GOP has no problems being huge hypocritical jackholes.

Wow, finally a dem I can vote for. I swear the teams are going to hot swap their planks in a few years.

A big tent party? My guess is that this is a blue dog (Virginia) pandering to the teabaggers who are up in arms that the "47%" are gittin' them slave reparations, dadgummit. There are a lot of "Democrats" who are (or have become) teabaggers in sheep's clothing.

As for Republicans, the definition of these days is, "If'n a Democrat is fer it, I'm agin' it." Except of course for raising (by which I mean not cutting) taxes for the wealthy, and not bombing Iran.

2012-09-21 10:05:52 AM
Yeah we still haven't forgotten about the teabaggers proposing the same thing so everyone had "skin in the game". It was their talking point for months.

I don't know what the fark the democrat was hoping to gain by entertaining it though.

So I suppose if you repeat it enough times it becomes true?

Raising taxes on the working class during a recession, even a non-recessed cryptorecession, is probably not ideal.

The fact that he said he's open to discussing all strategies in reforming the tax code should not be viewed as a bad thing. It's much better than ignoring possibilities without even a second of thought.

We have a progressive tax system. Deductions apply across the board. Nobody with the same deductions pays taxes on the same bracket. Someone who makes $20,000 and someone who makes $1,500,000 pays the SAME taxes on the first $20,000 if they have the same deductions.

Oh, and also,

MARGINAL PROPENSITY TO CONSUME

Retards.

That's it. I'm declaring today "Slap a Republican in the Face." If you see a person who talks about Republican politics, slap him or her square in the face. Bonus for a glove slap.

Because stupid, dishonest and evil people will not stop without a bit of shaming.

Republicans: "47% have no skin in the game!!!"
Tim Kaine:"I would be open to a proposal that would have some minimum tax level for everyone, But I do insist, many of the 47 percent that Gov. Romney was going after pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than he does."
Republicans: "OMG! Kaine's solution to 43 straight months of unemployment above 8 percent is to raise taxes on everyone!!! Remarkable!!!"

Remarkable indeed.

Republicans have absolutely no interest in being rational and honest.

that is fantastic. I love how Jesus has a tie...so we know he has a full time job...he just happens to have a beard and long hair and wear sandals because because because...well they don't really know why he dresses that way...but he has a tie, so you can just know that he has a full time job and pays all the taxes that is legally required in his tax bracket.

They pay state and municipal income taxes, sales taxes (which are incredibly regressive), property taxes (yes renters pay property taxes, duh), etc. etc.

/plus many are retirees, etc. who have already paid their damn share, students who will, in the future, pay their share, etc. and low income families who have paid their share in the past and will in the future once they recover from the bankers going nuts
//plus plus the 47% Federal tax stat is a statistical anomaly due to the biggest recession since the 1930s. In a typical year, something like 15% of Americans don't (directly) pay Federal income taxes (but still pay other taxes
//plus plus plus 100% of Americans are dependent on government

well I suppose the slope matters but there's no reason someone should be paying 99.999999% of what they make, even on a marginal basis.

This just shows that the Republican platform is based on the opposite of the Democrats' platform, no matter the issue. It saves them having to think

"47% don't pay taxes! They should have some skin in the game!"
"Hmm... maybe you're right. Perhaps they should pay something."
"Why do you hate poor people?"

the 47% in this context clearly refers to Federal income taxes. That is what that number represents. They even say "income taxes" in the quote you took issue with and it was in reference to a statement a guy made running for US Senate.
