His birth name is 'Wally'. Srsly, does Wally mean something over in the US to make you change it to Waldo? Isn't Wally just a name (there's a Wally in Dilbert after all)?

My favorite Where's Waldo moment was on The Simpsons, when Bart opens the book, and the whole page is just a picture of Waldo. Then Bart say, "Man Waldo, you're not even trying anymore."

I wondered about that too - Wally means a bit of an idiot in the UK, but isn't offensive so is OK for a kids book character, is there something about the name in the US that they had to change it to Waldo from the original?

My best guess is that "Waldo" was chosen to help convey the dorky quality that the term "wally" has in the UK. It's probably a coincidence, but the Waldo/Wally cartoon character also closely resembles Waldo from the "Our Gang" shorts.

Change it to Where's Muhammad !

1.Now the trick is not to include any image of the Mo, at all.
2. Entire Muslim World devotes all their time looking for something that's not there.
3. Peace reigns through the world.

Thanks for the replies. I've done some googling and it seems that the author and publisher simply felt that 'Wally' wouldn't sell as well so opted for Waldo. Got nothing concrete though, just other forum posts on the subject.

I remember a few years back on Rooster Teeth's website they did a Photoshop Cartoon Gus contest and someone did a Where's Waldo one. The comments on that one pic were mainly that they found Waldo before finding Gus (me included).

You forgot the "Fark it! We are lazy" option and the ones who will just attack you (physical and / or verbal) and not even realize there is no picture.

With all the jokes about "Where's Waldo", I would've sworn it was at least 50 years old.
