Rabbit of Seville is a very close second in greatness to "What's Opera Doc?"

Somewhere, there's a Bugs Bunny cartoon that has him helping the ghost of Franz Schubert complete the Unfinished Symphony

/that frikkin cartoon led to a life-long love of classical music, and the Unfinished Symphony in particular
//evil, I tells ya

Me too.

"Water, Water Every Hare" with Bugs giving the monster a permanent is a personal favorite.

Happy Birthday Mr. Jones

2012-09-21 03:02:49 AM
Not to take anything away from the man, because he was inarguably a genius whose work gave me a lot of joy growing up, but he is also responsible for the Tom & Jerry episodes that I consistently loathe.

2012-09-21 03:07:07 AM
BTW anyone ever notice that at the start of Rabbit of Seville the billboard has the name Carlo Jonzi? A nice fun reference to Jones.

Wow, didn't notice that, but I'll look for it the next time. Thanks for the headsup.

At about 5:54 in that second video, the FDR election one, is a screen cap which should prove the notion of "what's old is new again".

All due respect to Rabbit of Seville and One Froggy Evening, this is the proper #2 to What's Opera Doc?.

No arguing.

No, no, no. The worst Tom & Jerry cartoons (aside from the network TV Saturday morning atrocities) were produced by Gene Deitch. Case in point:

Calypso Cat

It is THAT director's version of Tom and Jerry that are the direct basis for the Itchy and Scratchy spoofs.

Duck Amuck

My favorite.

I still think Chuck and Mel were an order of magnitude ahead of their time...and most of the over-produced animated features of today. They probably produced 25 cartoons for what it took to make a minute of Avatar.

One of my favorite scenes ever:

Bugs: It's true, Doc. I'm a rabbit, alright. Would you like to shoot me now or wait 'til you get home?
Daffy: Shoot him now!!!! Shoot him now!!!!
Bugs: You keep out of this! He doesn't have to shoot you now!
Daffy: He does so have to shoot me now! (to Elmer) I demand that you shoot me now!

(Elmer looks at the camera, unsure if Daffy knows what he's talking about. As Daffy sticks his tongue out at Bugs, he is shot. Daffy pushes the tongue back in and pulls his beak back in its place and marches back over to Bugs, gun smoke pouring out of his nostrils.)

Daffy: (to Bugs) Let's run through that again.
Bugs: Okay. (deadpan) Would you like to shoot me now or wait till you get home.
Daffy: (similarly) Shoot him now; shoot him now.
Bugs: (as before) You keep outta this, he doesn't have to shoot you now.
Daffy: (re-animated) Hah! That's it! Hold it right there! [to audience] Pronoun trouble. (to Bugs) It's not "He doesn't have to shoot you now". It's "He doesn't have to shoot me now."
(Pause)
Daffy: (angrily) Well, I say he does have to shoot me now!! (to Elmer) So shoot me now!!!
(Elmer obliges and lets him have it. Daffy puts his beak back to normal and rushes to Bugs in a pose with him pointing a finger at him with his mouth open.)
Bugs: Yes?
(Daffy looks at the camera and forcibly pulls his arm back and closes his beak.)
Daffy: (shakes his head) Oh no you don't. (shakes head again) Not again. Sorry.
(Daffy walks over to Elmer.)
Daffy: This time we'll try it from the other end. Look, you're a hunter, right?
Elmer: Wight!
Daffy: And this is rabbit season, right?
Elmer: Wight!
Bugs: (interrupting, pointing at Daffy) And if he was a rabbit, what would you do?
Daffy: Yeah, you're so smart! If I was a rabbit what would you do?
Elmer: Well, I'd... (Points gun at Daffy)
Daffy: (Looks at the camera in horror) Not again! (gets shot)
(Daffy puts his beak back and walks over to Bugs with a deadpan expression.)
Daffy: (re-animated) Ha-ha, very funny, ha-ha-ha-ha! (resumes deadpan expression)

I loves me some "Wabbit Season, Duck Season" scenes, also loves me some Wiley Coyote and Road Runner cartoons.

Agree with above poster that "Avenging Angel" was the best Looney Tunes homage ever.

You have to admit they were etter than the ones produced in Eastern Europe.

Even he didn't really like those characters. They were Hanna/Barbera's babies and he felt that he really couldn't do them justice. So, he just applied the Roadrunner formula to them. Pretty effectively, actually.

My all time favorite line from a Jones cartoon.

"Did you know that when you are in love, it is impossible to get insurance?"

I totally admire that he created some of the best Looney Toons cartoons ever, but also adore his Rikki Tikki Tavi adaptation. I must have watched that so many times as a kid...

He animated The Grinch too!!! In fact, he based the Grinch on himself. If you look at a pics of each side by side, you can totally see it.
CSB- I have a friend whose grandmother was CJ's secretary for many years. She has a huge file of drawings he would make while on phone calls. Just doodles on animation paper to him. Priceless works of art now to her.

The "HARK" smoke is one of my favorite things ever.

John Kricfalusi did a fun article examining the "smears" (the animation getting characters from Point A to Point B) in Dover Boys awhile back. Good stuff.
