One of the reasons I've been the cook in my household: My wife cooked a good lasagna soup many years ago.
/why yes I finally got my kitchen (which I designed) after 12 years in our house when we did a refinancing

I feel sorry for people, male or female, who either aren't interested in or derive no pleasure from cooking. It's akin to not liking sex to me. I just don't get it.

And by decent we mean traditional yet good.

No fusion cuisine, no nuts in the brownies, no passion fruit.

Turkey, cranberry sauce, and freakin' pumpkin pie. It ain't rocket science.

Cooking for loved ones (be they friends, family or lovers) is one of the great joys in life.

Plus, you don't have to do the dishes.

Here's a thought - how about you do it for each other? Men and women work the same hours these days, and share the same chores.

Except steak and BJ day. I don't do sh*t on that day. Not even help carry the steaks you just bought for me. For the amount of hell and self-doubt ("will she love this or punch me in the dick?") you put me through on Valentine's day, steak and BJ day is my revenge. Suck it, haters.

And get me a beer while you're at it.

Everyone should learn to cook.

As a chef, I often find that gals are a little intimidated in cooking for me. That's why I like cooking with folks. It's fun. It's great to learn stuff from friends, how other families do things, learn new traditional dishes, learn new takes on dishes I already know and share recipes and techniques. I always learn something, and it's fun to share.

Food is as basic as it gets. It's connection. It's passion, it's necessary, and it can be both art, craft, and just plain play. Friends get together, you get a bite together. And drinks. That's how basic the connection is. We celebrate with food. We commiserate with food. We share when folks are in trouble, grieve, or are have troubles.

Cooking is connection. Plain and simple. Sharing food with folks we like, that's a joy.

Everyone should learn how to use the convenience equipment that comes standard in their domicile in order to live their lives. Or else they will pay more money to whoever can do this for them.

hubiestubert: As a chef, I often find that gals are a little intimidated in cooking for me.

Actually, they're probably annoyed at being referred to as "gals." Seriously... I'm an old fart, but even I remember that women stomped out being called "girls" and/or "gals" about 20 years ago. And I sure as hell wouldn't call one a gal with kitchen cutlery in the room.

2012-09-21 01:58:45 AM
I dated a girl who bragged that she didn't have the slightest idea how to do anything but nuke a Lean Cuisine or order pizza. She grew up ass-poor, too, so it's not like she had Hattie McDaniel pounding out roasts on demand, either.

Needless to say, it didn't last. Even if all you can do is boil water and heat up some sauce in a pan eventually you'll think "I wonder what this would taste like if I added *this* to it?" and the next thing you know you're actually cooking.

2012-09-21 02:13:39 AM
If you consider doing something nice for your significant other "selling out" then I think you have some problems.

2012-09-21 02:23:21 AM
Someone in the relationship needs to know how to cook. That applies to straight couples, male or female, and gay couples of both genders. Someone needs to cook. Ideally both.

Are we talking cooking on a stove, or grilling a variety of dead animals outside? Because I'm the master of the latter. The former? Meh, not so much. I do make a mean Hamburger Helper, though

I mean real kitchen cooking. I can teach anyone to grill, but real kitchen cooking requires intuition, science, and artistry. I don't meet many women open-minded enough to do more than read a recipe off a page.

Heh, I married mine. It's odd, our personalities flip in the kitchen. She eyeballs everything, never cooks a dish the same way twice, while I get fussy about the details. Other than that, she's very type A, while I'm pretty relaxed.
