When does artistic license become unartistic butchery. Answer: When Peter Jackson makes a film.

Your no Tolkien fan. If you were you'd have blown a gasket at what he did. I couldn't make it through The Two Towers
without being in a seething rage. I still have not watched the Return of the King and never will. From all indications in the
clip I have seen of a trailer for The Hobbit he has hacked that up as well.

You mean expose a new generation of people who may never have heard of or read LOTR to the series, possibly inspiring them to pick up the books? The Horror!

Granted I thought the books were highly overrated, and tended to drag on and on, and at the time I read them back in the 80s I was pretty heavy into fantasy novels.

I highly doubt your going to find that many of the inured masses that watched the films will pick up the books. Probably less than 1 percent. So I'm a purist sue me. I've read the LOTR series along with most of the other Middle Earth novels as many as 50 times. I love them. Most of the other novels I read tend toward Science Fiction.

You sound like one of those folks who blow a gasket each month Martin doesn't release a Game of Thrones novel. The ownership that some "fans" take over the works of others can be equally irritating and depressing at times. Some of Jackson's choices were made simply because they made a better film. Jesus.

No one takes ownership of a classic it's a classic because of the power and compelling nature of the story. There are some things I understand why they were left out like the Bombadil section. If you really want to learn the depth of Jackson's asshattery read this webpage.... LOTR movie-book differences.

This is the point where I kick you out of my comic shop for being too much of a nerd.

It worked! He already is.

Now get Jackson to direct THAT episode.

I was about to read the books when I heard the movies were coming out. I figured I'm always disappointed when I see a movie when I've read the book, so I waited for the movies. Bored my ass off.

I figured, well now I can read the books and see how good the story really is! Also bored my ass off. I'm glad other people can enjoy it so much, I probably enjoy The Wheel of Time as much as most LOTR fans enjoy their preferred series. Just not my thing.

Yes I understanf the irony of saying LOTR bored me but WoT didn't. Maybe books 6-9 I skip any chapter with Nyneave.

You wouldn't have gotten the chance. I hated comic books.

Yes, but who cares? Did anyone honestly think that a LOTR adaptation would be scene-by-scene, or that Jackson wouldn't have to use some shorthand here and there? Are there differences between the book and the movie? Well, yes, and I can't think of many films that haven't manipulated the content egregiously.

Using your Tom Bombadil example, in LOTR, he appears, sings some songs, tells some stories, and then disappears, never to be seen again. Including him in the movie would satisfy the LOTR nerds among us, but they aren't going to be enough in force to make putting the film together worth the effort. Same thing with the Ent Council. In the book, does it make sense? Sure. In the movie, do we really want to see the Ents wandering the forest, calling a council, and then simply deciding to go to war?

Like I said earlier, the only thing about the adaptation that bothered me was the depiction of Denthor.

Some of the stuff on the link you have is completely nitpicky and pointless. OH MY GOD, THE WITCH KING HAS A MACE INSTEAD OF A FLAIL! ARTISTIC "BUTCHERY" IS WHAT I CALL IT!

Seriously, as a slightly geeky person myself, I think I get more irritated with the reactions of the extreme geeks who want everything to be absolutely perfectly faithful to their own vision (even though they don't have the creativity to do it) than I do at the one-and-done fanboys.

Not that I'm quite as angry about it as Icetech, but how is he wrong? Between shifting the focus from Frodo to Aragorn, while filling the later with angst about who he is, beefing up Arwen's character, turning Merry, Pippin and Gimli into buffoons and Legolas into superman, the complete transformation of Faramir's character, the clusterfark that was the handling of the Army of the Dead(and the siege of Minas Tirith generally), and any number of other smaller gripes, you don't think he has a case at all?

They're entertaining enough as movies but don't hold up all that great as adaptations, in my opinion.

/Cautiously optimistic about the Hobbit, but, three movies? Really?

I'm expecting a lot of filler material from the appendices. I don't know if it will be half of the runtime, but I do think it will be a significant portion of the films.

I'm sure there will be a fan edit after all the films are out that makes it into as faithful an adaptation as possible.
