A protest at the US embassy in Pakistan! It must be a day that ends in Y.

I sincerely hope that the security forces guys there are weapons free...and that we have an appropriate level of quick reaction forces ready to move.

Hyperbolic submitter is hyperbolic.
FTFA: The warning comes as hundreds of Pakistanis angry at the film clash with police in the capital, Islamabad. A crowd of more than 1,000 people tried to make their way to the US Embassy inside a guarded enclave that houses embassies and government offices.

Still, no good. I hope all stay safe, and the protests are peaceful.

(I know, but one can always hope for a good outcome, right?)

That's what I was thinking.

y'know...here in the west, we've got our problems. unemployment. a rich 1% that's convinced it's not wealth enough until they have ALL the money. idiot leaders. religious nutbags. lots of problems. But..one thing we DID get right is that if someone posts a rude, insulting video we don't go riot in the streets over it. we'll make counter-videos. write blogs, write our congressman. we might even sue. But we don't go out and murder people just because some artistically challenged nobody chopped together a crappy video and posted it on a youtube account.

now i'm not saying Islam is primitive or violent and uncivilized...but I am saying that Islam seems to have a real problem the idea of self expression. this is a wired world - there IS no filter anymore. At any time and in any country, someone could (and probably will) say something that will offend Islam. And probably all of Christianity and Judaism as well. plus offending some pagans and hell, a few atheists just for good measure. My point here is that you are GOING to be offended. probably quite a lot and quite often. So going out and burning building and murdering people is going to tired you out. it's also not going to stop you from being offended nor will it stop people from going out and saying/doing things that offend you. So my advice to ALL of Islam is this: suck it up and get over yourselves. learn to handle opposing viewpoints and accept that you cannot control the thoughts and actions of other human beings.

there. that probably offended at least half a million muslims. TRY not to burn down anything while being offended by my comments, ok? thanks guys! glad we had this chat.

They're pissed at us already for mismanaging the Afghan war and having its effects spill over into their country. This film is just beating that hornets nest.

Yeah, I heard that report last night. I knew that the US was way more tolerant of free speech even when compared to a country like the UK, but NPR kinda indicated that we're pretty much an far outlier. It's weird, as the whole "Free Speech" thing is so ingrained into our culture, I think a lot of us assume that other Western Countries are just as tolerant.

Angry Drunk Bureaucrat: It's weird, as the whole "Free Speech" thing is so ingrained into our culture, I think a lot of us assume that other Western Countries are just as tolerant.

I don't think it is still ingrained as we would like to believe. Remember we have "free speech zones" outside political conventions and people get thrown out of rallies for wearing the wrong T-Shirt or asking the wrong questions. And the ACLU has plenty of cases to keep it busy. State laws that don't allow a doctor to tell their patient if abortion is an option for them if they have a severe problem with their pregnancy. We keep women out of state and congressional committee discussions on Birth Control and still have violent police reactions to some protest events. Then there are the e-mail and internet activity monitoring the FBI and NSA do...

I don't think the U.K. is worse than us on the free speech front.

This idea that American is the great font of freedom in the world is simply not true anymore.

I no longer care about Pakistan or those that live there. Seriously, they're still in bed with terrorists, and they suck for stuff like this too.

Pull all our people out, ban everybody with a passport from there, stop the aid. Let India know we don't care. Tell them to call us when they've advanced to the 21st century.

On the other side of that, Salman Rushdie (who has a wee bit of experience in having the entire Islamic world on his ass) made a great point on the Daily Show the other night... Basically, you have these third world banana republics where every aspect of the media is tightly controlled by the government. Our concept of freedom of speech is so alien to what is ingrained in these people, they can't even begin to wrap their heads around the fact that this video was NOT created for and approved by government bureaucrats, but was instead the work of one douche looking to troll people.

When I moved to Canada, I heard about "Human Rights Commissions", and had some interesting conversations with people in Canada about freedom of speech that kind of blew my mind.

My wife, for example, was horrified that Klan rallies are legal and permitted, and that I - Mr. King Liberal White Douche - actually supports the right of people who are COMPLETELY WRONG to still be wrong as loud as they like.

America is a strange and beautiful place. I wish that Americans realized that.

I can agree with the mismanagement bit to a degree, but I think "spill over" is unfair considering they're harboring known terrorists.

KiplingKat872: Remember we have "free speech zones" outside political conventions

This i have no problems with, every group has their outliers that would use a protest to cause harm to or prevent the conventions from taking place. You can still get your message out there, the "zones" are still heavily covered by the press, but it's safer for everyone involved.

Yes, yes safety v. liberty and all that, but when some protest outlier and some police outlier, the latter is obviously larger than the former, decide to get all shiatty and bullets start flying people that were just there for speech get hurt. Cooler heads can prevail, I file this under "don't yell fire in a crowded theater" type of restrictions.
