Dude, it's called football. Not soccer. And yeah, totally legal. Unless it's handball. Then, illegal.

Clearly the creator of this device has just enough free time on their hands. Lego is expensive.

Yeah, I'm guessing $50k for the LEGO bricks. Maybe more. The electrical components aren't cheap and he is using a ton of them.

Maybe not. The littlebopper has a ton of LEGO bricks, only a small fraction of which we purchased new. Most of them come from garage sales, etc. I think we paid $10 for a complete mindstorm robot one time at a garage sale.

spent two years building

Is that two years of accumulated work time? Or two years from start date to end date, because there is a huge ass difference.

So did he really spend two years building it, or did he build it over the course of two years.

I mean, for all we know, he spent one minute on it per day over the course of two years ... for a total of about 12 hours of actual work.

And did anyone else help him over the course of those two years, is he counting their time as time that he worked on it?

// I'm working on labor and overtime charging reports right now, can you tell :P

// damned FTE calculations

This again? I could've sworn that I saw this on Fark earlier this year.

The video indicates that total actual construction time spent was 600 hrs; it doesn't say whether there were others helping, nor does it talk about design time.

/this thing was awesome.

600 hours is a good amount of spare time for two years, but not insane. As someone who has a very time consuming hobby (building miniature live steam engines) I can relate to this.

LazarusLong42: The video indicates that total actual construction time spent was 600 hrs

Didn't watch the video

but that works out to about 49 minutes per day.

It looks so much like my Minecraft:Tekkit world it's scary.

Also, I wonder how much power that thing uses.

Takes a lotta balls to make something like that.

There's a question that all of us have been asked at one point or another in our lives: "What would you do if you won the lottery?"

Lots of people say they'd travel, or they'd become benefactors, set up their friends and families for life, and the more inventive of us talk about buying an island or creating an underground bunker/supervillain lair, maybe something of the hollowed-out volcano variety, but it seems a lot of it seems ridiculously grandiose.

I'm simpler than that. I'd do this. Maybe more elaborate, to the point of being suspected of mental illness, but if I had the money and all the time in the world, I'd do exactly this. Create elaborate, magnificent, remarkable edifices of motion, of functional singlemindedness, half a million pieces humming and buzzing and spiraling and clicking with the sole goal of conveying little plastic balls through an endless journey that's simultaneously pointless and glorious.

Oh, and two chicks at the same time.
