Even worse, off all of the beauty and variety that California has to offer, they photograph some kid at a Dodgers game. The farking Dodgers, fer Chrissake, the very worst thing about California, and that's what they show! I'd have preferred that they show downtown Bakersfield, or an oil refinery, or a garbage dump, or damn near anything else rather than something relating to the goddamn Dodgers and their "fans."

at least you could tell it was California from the picture. NJ just had some nitwits in a portable carnival ride that has probably been in fairgrounds all up and down the east coast.

Won't complain about Virginia's picture considering I was expecting something to do with the Confederacy. I would say that there were around 10 states fairly represented, another dozen or so playing to stereotypes and the rest were anywhere from 'meh' to trash.

Aggies at a football game? Not even remotely fair. You know, Marion Barry is an iconic and even beloved figure in D.C., so a picture of him would be a fine way to represent D.C. BUT YOU WOULDN'T SHOW HIM LIGHTING UP A CRACK PIPE. It's the ugly moment when all the stereotypes come true for a while, and then a few days later you can shake the image out of your mind and remind yourself that they have a world-class veterinary school and a lot of great research programs. Showing a photo of Aggies at a football game is like showing Marion Barry smoking crack with a hooker, or Elizabeth Taylor with her hand in a bucket of fried chicken. Or, to be fair, a picture of scuzzy homeless twenty-year-olds on the drag in Austin trying to bum money to buy drugs. How does this fit in with pictures of yacht races, cute kids, and natural wonders?

I find it amusing that for Rhode Island they picked something that most Rhode Islanders have never seen in person.

Given that the choice for my home state, Connecticut, I'm forced to suspect that none of these pics necessarily depict anything typical or distinctive about the states they're in, beyond obvious choices such as the Grand Canyon. I'd admire an attempt to go for the unusual, but what's unusual about a Memorial Day parade in any white city?

2012-09-20 01:41:26 AM
I like how everyone is pissed that their state's representation is too sterotypical. If they're not busy biatching that it's not stereotypical enough. It's just interesting photos that were categorized by the state in which they were taken.

Also what's with people who can't even look at a simple picture without turning up the wharrblgarble? They're like those dreggy newspaper commenters who see a story about a cat nursing a litter of orphaned wolverines and say "Lousy freeloading wolverines! Notice that they are black and looking for a handout, bet they vote for B. Hoosane Obama too!" It's gotta be some form of extra annoying OCD. I thought Atlantic readers would be above that.

/my comment on the wolverine story would be a prayer offered for the mother cat's teats.

I dunno, I'm in Fargo and I thought it was highly representative. An abandoned farmhouse and an oil well sums up the western half of the state nicely.

A photo of any five-mile stretch of I-29 would exemplify the eastern half the the state equally well.

My three-year-old couldn't get through the stars room at the Neil Armstrong museum fast enough last March, but now he talks about it at least once a week.

The museum is pretty nifty, pretty dated. But it does kind of feel like you have left the 21st Century when you walk through there.

Not sure if that'd be the picture I choose for Ohio, anyhow. It would have been nice to have a photo that showed an Ohio landscape as something other than flat, Cleveland, or football.

A sculpture adorns the front grounds at Medway Plantation in Goose Creek, South Carolina, on February 17, 2012. The plantation contains 6,728 acres of land and is staffed by 7 full-time employees. Upkeep on the property can run as high as $500,000 a year. In the South Carolina Lowcountry, more than a half-dozen antebellum plantations, which don't change hands often, are now for sale.

Arkansas Ozarks in Fall

Holy cats, those are gorgeous. I mean bring-a-tear-to-your-eye gorgeous. When I was young, we had a large picture of the Ozarks on a wall in our house. It got lost or ruined in a move, but I remember staring at it many times. Just stupefyingly beautiful. And this is coming from a New England girl, where we get to see the explosion of fall foliage every year without having to travel. What we don't have are the massive and beautifully sculpted mountains to go along with it, except in the highest parts of Vermont. (And that's a risky venture, because they're often socked in with fog.)

well...they're both right, I guess

but is a picture of a pitcher redundant?

Yes I've had a few drinks, what of it?

fudgefactor7: Once again, Iowa gets farked in the mix because instead of the scenic prairie we get some redneck, inbred kid with a farking Mohawk and German cross ear rings.

At least they didn't show his meth-addicted dad.

dletter: I may actually do a little experiment, and see what the first photo (not map or icon) that appears for the GIS on a state name. That would be 100x more interesting than this page.

Safe search on or off?

LOL, well, on at first, but, another one with off would be very interesting.

redheadstepchild: Love the freshwater surfing pic for Wisconsin..... nice to see Sheboygan being recognized for something (VERY) cool instead of all the crazy shait that happens there.

It's called freshwater surfing. In fall when the wind blows out of the northeast this stretch of Lake Michigan will throw some nice waves

Should've known there'd be a dang nascar referrence for Tennessee. Shows the failure of the pictures since people usualy think country music or the Smokey Mountains.

My state has this little monument featuring the faces of four important presidents, but they went with Doggie Day at a city pool.

/It is a fun day, though

That's the best they could do for my fair Wisconsin?

Fresh water 'surfers' paddling in Lake Michigan?

Pfffffffft. Fark you.

(on the other hand, at least it wasn't a farking 'Happy Days' or 'Laverne and Shirley' reference)

This was an idea that had some true potential but needed some decent research to pull off right.

For example...

Delaware
Pic of a major corporation's HQ office that is just a P.O. Box.
A picture of the Hagley museum - former DuPont estate (bonus points if you could have the experimental station building off in the distance)
Horseshoe crabs at the Delaware beaches where migrating birds feast on their eggs before continuing their journey.

Oklahoma
The nodding donkey oil well on the grounds of the governor's mansion.
Cherokee reservations
Picture of downtown after 6 pm where you see no one and would expect tumbleweeds to blow down the street. Bonus if there's a tornado touching down.

Pennsylvania
Pic of the Occupy (location). Bonus points if you could get the to gather near the Liberty Bell.
Suburbs of Philly where farm fields are next to a big box Walmart or Costco or Three Mile Island.
Centralia PA showing the hazards of the coal industry
Old steel mills in Pittsburgh.

Nebraska
corn fields
more corn fields
car that veered off the road into a corn field because the driver fell asleep from driving past a 100 miles of cornfields.

I guess some states could be summed up in one pic, but others need more.

Lukeonia1: Representative of the unwashed masses: Show a donkey pump at an oilwell in N. Dakota? weak. While I am from Saskatchewan (Canadian province right on top of them) it is a pretty State. Surely there are some better pictures they could have picked.

I dunno, I'm in Fargo and I thought it was highly representative. An abandoned farmhouse and an oil well sums up the western half of the state nicely.

A photo of any five-mile stretch of I-29 would exemplify the eastern half the the state equally well.

Interesting, I actually think that Minot is a pretty cool town.
