I just started watching on AmazonPrime (and they need a better media player.) I didn't catch on to the original run until about the third season. Damn this was good stuff.

The Amazon thing costs $80 a year. But in addition to free streaming videos of TV and movies, you get free shipping on all things marked "Prime." You can save a shiat ton of money. But the media player is small. You can expand it to take up the whole screen, but then the sound is out of sync. That has been my experience.

I also have NetFlix streaming, which is much better, but as you said, it is missing West Wing and a few other choice things I'd like.

I'll definitely look into it. Apparently The West Wing was a Sorkin brainchild just like The Newroom (which was freaking EXCELLENT) so I WILL be making this happen one way or the other.

Obama could really learn how to govern from Bartlet. Campaign Bartlet and Campaign Obama are good, but Governing Obama sucks.

Especially since the first two seasons are the best. Well, my favorite is still "The Supremes" in the 5th seasons, but that's me. It really drops off in the 6th season, but once the campaigns start it gets good again.

Governing Obama has to deal with a farkass opposition in Congress who's stated farking goal was not to govern, but to assure he doesn't get reelected. In other words, reality.

Pres. Bartlet: ...restoring abundance amid an economic shortfall, securing peace in a time of global conflict, sustaining hope in this winter of anxiety and fear. More than any time in recent history, America's destiny is not of our own choosing. We did not seek nor did we provoke an assault on our freedom and our way of life. We did not expect nor did we invite a confrontation with evil. Yet the true measure of a people's strength is how they rise to master that moment when it does arrive. Forty-four people were killed a couple of hours ago at Kennison State University. Three swimmers from the men's team were killed and two others are in critical condition, when, after having heard the explosion from their practice facility, they ran into the fire to help get people out. Ran into the fire. The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels tonight. They're our students and our teachers and our parents and our friends. The streets of heaven are too crowded with angels, but every time we think we have measured our capacity to meet a challenge, we look up and we're reminded that that capacity may well be limitless. This is a time for American heroes. We will do what is hard. We will achieve what is great. This is a time for American heroes and we reach for the stars. God bless their memory, God bless you and God bless the United States of America. Thank you.

This clip isn't about voters like that, because like LordJiro said there are people who say the same thing about President Obama. This is about how the President responds to those people, and if he will show respect and compassion toward them, or denigrate them as people who don't want to take responsibility for their own lives.

Well, the courts put him in power in 2000, and 2004 was riddled with exit poll issues and he lost the popular vote. That's on top of the debt, starting wars, domestic spying and state sponsored torture.

I'm surprised anyone claims the guy.

I think a lot of that came from the fact that he didn't actually get the most votes in that election and a lot of people thought he was handed the election by the court.

But the above statement is about the mentality of the President, not the governed. The President still has to be the President of people who say he's not their President. He can't just say it's not his "job to worry about those people." It's his job to worry about everyone.

If this had been an exercise in missing the point, you would have done very well. But this isn't about the people disowning the the guy they didn't vote for, it's about how the President treats the country as a whole, including those who don't agree with him.

Hey, West Wing fans ... remember that one episode where the office chick wore a Starfleet insignia to work in the White House, and Josh thought is was inappropriate, and she said 'but it represents my ideals', and he said 'yeah, but you're fetishizing it, so don't wear it to work'?

Yeah, stop fetishizing The West Wing.

It's nice to think of a government full of enlightened, Nobel-Prize-winning, witty characters that can recall Ivy League trivia, have the US Code memorized, and have a genuine love and concern for the great People of the United States ...

... but in REALITY, government is made of sniveling, greedy, talentless, unproductive, power-lusting nobodies who care about their and pensions and their little fiefdoms than they do anyone or anything else. Their sole motivation is to protect their own employment at whatever social or economic cost it takes. This is the way it has always been with giant governments, and the way it will always be. Conservative or liberal, male or female, black or white, government is where people who produce nothing of value go to get fat paychecks to sit around and f*ck sh*t up through negligence, incompetence, and corruption.

West Wing, like Star Trek was a fun fantasy, but it's never going to come true.

Worth knowing is that Sorkin was basing characters in the series off political operators he saw and knew. Any time you think Josh throws elbows in a familiar way, remember that he's based on Rahm Emanuel.

tomWright: ""I'm the President of the United States, not the President of the people who agree with me.""

Yeah. Considering how many folks on the left I heard say that Bush was not "their" president, this seems somewhat, ironic? Does that fit here?

No. Somehow you managed to get that completely backwards.

See, the reason lefties were saying that is because he wasn't acting like their president. In fact, I seem to recall him talking about a "mandate" for his policies, when he had only won by such slim margins, instead of following a path of compromise that might have been suggested by the close election.

Hell, I'm a libby-lefty and I gave him my support and respect after 9/11. It was as great of an opportunity to be everyone's president as any. It's a shame he pissed it all away on unnecessary wars and intrusive security measures.

You don't have dreams of a "grand future" that you work towards? You must become the change you seek.

2012-09-19 07:56:55 PM
Veep is better. I said it.

The West Wing is a good show with clever dialogue but it was ultimately a left-wing masturbatory fantasy of how government should work and it's produced a generation of liberals who think the government actually *does* work that way and get frustrated that Obama can't run his administration the same way a fictional character did.

Veep portrays the way DC actually works so much better. The petty undercurrent, the brown-nosing/arrogant staffers, the career climbers. Jonah and Ben are the worst and I know lots of people here JUST LIKE THEM. The changing priorities from above and the scrambling to adjust. The deals you have to make. It's so spot on it's scary.

Veep is also made by the same folks who gave us Malcolm Tucker of The Thick of It/In the Loop so you have to watch it now.

Here's another relevant one.

Santos: It's true, Republicans have tried to turn 'liberal' into a bad word. Well, liberals ended slavery in this country.
Vinick: A Republican president ended slavery.
Santos: Yes, a liberal Republican. What happened to them? They got run out of your party. What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican party? I'll tell you what they did. Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created social security and lifted millions of elderly people out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act. What did Conservatives do? They opposed every one of those programs. Every one. So when you try to hurl the word 'liberal' at my feet, as if it were dirty, something to run away from, something that I should be ashamed of, it won't work, Senator, because I will pick up that label and wear it as a badge of honor.

I always like another Bruno clip from Season 7 explaining to Vinick why he wants to run a Republican's campaign. It basically amounted to "because you're not them. You're a uniting president, not a dividing one. I want to help a uniter win,"

There's no clip or quotes that I can find, sadly.

Yes, lazy leeches with an anti-Midas touch are found exclusively in government positions. In no way can such people be found anywhere in private enterprise. That's why Office Space failed completely, because it didn't speak to anything people experience in the workplace. We can now proceed to trade anecdotes over how one is so much worse than the other.

It's like how Republicans deliberately and willfully break everything they can about government, then crow about how government can do nothing right.

Out of curiosity, how much of "governing Obama" do you believe is his fault, and what number do you give the intransigent GOP? I'm asking a genuine question. Furthermore, are you basically saying Obama doesn't pack the gear to serve in our beloved corps?

On some days I consider it 50/50, but on others it can trend upward of 70/30 with the cheap politics of the GOP in the lead. Keep in mind that I'm fairly well-known as a raging libtard, but obstructionism in the name of gaining points doesn't lie, and the fact that I'm more liberal than Obama (hell, who isn't) doesn't interfere with my thoughts. I genuinely feel the man has faced Sisyphean tasks with this Congress and therefore it's difficult to pin the majority of the blame on him.

He was supposed to do everything, and yet still have the 100% approval of Congress, never violate any laws and yet do things so breathtakingly illegal that, had they been done, would have met the Constitutional definition of treason.

Seriously, the attacks against Obama from all angles of the political spectrum have been astonishing for their doublethink: We want him to close down Gitmo, but not free any of the terrorists but keep them safe but not in my state! And when he couldn't do any of that it was HIS FAULT. We want him to balance the budget, cut costs and increase revenue but without stepping on any toes in Congress and without raising taxes or cutting services and despite filibustering and cloture issues! And when he couldn't it was HIS FAULT.

And it's been coming from everyone and nobody wants to consider that if Obama had in fact done the things people most condemn him for failing to do, he'd have had to be the dictator everyone seems to think he is. You can't have it both ways, either on the left or the right.

You're a son of a biatch, you know that?  She bought her first new car and you hit her with a drunk driver. What? Was that supposed to be funny? "You can't conceive, nor can I, the appalling strangeness of the mercy of God," says Graham Greene. I don't know whose ass he was kissing there, 'cause I think you're just vindictive. What was Josh Lyman - a warning shot? That was my son. What did I ever do to yours but praise his glory and praise his name? There's a tropical storm that's gaining speed and power. They say we haven't had a storm this bad since you took out that tender ship of mine in the North Atlantic last year. Sixty-eight crew. You know what a tender ship does? Fixes the other ships. It doesn't even carry guns. It just goes around, fixes the other ships and delivers the mail. That's all it can do. Gratias tibi ago, domine. Yes, I lied. It was a sin. I've committed many sins. Have I displeased you, you feckless thug? 3.8 million new jobs, that wasn't good?

Bailed out Mexico. Increased foreign trade. Thirty million new acres of land for conservation. Put Mendoza on the bench. We're not fighting a war. I've raised three children. That's not enough to buy me out of the doghouse?

Haec Credam a deo pio, a deo iusto, a deo scito? Cruciatus in crucem. Trus in terra servus, nuntius fui, officium perfeci. Cruciatus in crucem. Eas in crucem.

You get Hoynes.

The Latin:

Am I to believe these things from a righteous god? A just god? A wise god?

Thanks!

Lernaeus: Hey, West Wing fans ... remember that one episode where the office chick wore a Starfleet insignia to work in the White House, and Josh thought is was inappropriate, and she said 'but it represents my ideals', and he said 'yeah, but you're fetishizing it, so don't wear it to work'?

Your cynical, sweeping generalization is no more apt than the idealistic generalization that you decry.

DamnYankees: Via Infinito: I have never watched The West Wing and I'm starting to think that's a damned shame.

This was always a favorite clip of mine, in terms of West Wing electoral politics: Link

My personal favorite scene was the National Cathedral in "Two Cathedrals" right when he does the bit with the cig. For real fun watch Sorkin's comments on the DVD for that ep.
