Goddammit my bullshiat meter just exploded.

Also, in case anyone wants to know the real reason, it's that he can't possibly keep his tax promises. To close the loopholes and lower taxes without reducing income, he has to have a net increase in middle class taxes. Based on what little information he's given, there is no other possible solution.

So, Paul, what's stopping you from having that discussion with Congressional Democrats now? You are a not only a Congressman, but the House Republican's official budget wonk. Why isn't the budget plan you proposed already a compromise with the Democrats?

Wait, so Paul Ryan can't announce the Romney/Ryan tax plan because... Republicans really want to compromise with their Congressional opponents? Sounds legit to us.

Of COURSE it sounds legit. To reveal their tax plan as being a "compromise" with Democrats would ...well, I guess their base will vote for them no matter what, but still. But, you just have to look at how the freshmen Republicans in the House freaked the f*ck out at even the MENTION of a compromise on the debt issue.

Of COURSE Romney and Ryan are going to keep mum about it.

I've seen analysis of RobMe's tax promise that says he'd have to eliminate both the mortgage deduction AND the dependent deduction from everyone's income taxes to even come close, and of course both of those are used by the middle class more than anyone else.

Yeah, there's a void where that followup question should be. It's not like they need to wait in order to compromise and hash out a budget deal that's acceptable to both parties. In fact, it's sort of the main reason why Congress exists, and they have a chance every year, regardless of whether or not Mitt Romney is president. Even if you take Ryan's statement in good faith, you can fill in some of the blanks on what Democrats are going to want: tax increases on high income earners and defense cuts. The Democratic budget platform isn't some wacky chameleon where no assumptions can be made of what it will look like on any given day.

Furthermore, isn't that sort of philosophy - gasp - "leading from behind?"

I don't know how I would feel about a president who waited for others to dictate his policies.

Ryan's got no possible way to win talking about taxes with Boy-King Norquist and the Highest Form of Patriotic Descenters riding his ass about never raising taxes, pinky swear for reals. They need revenue to cover their capital gains cuts and increased defense spending, so they just pretend they can get it from tax loopholes but everyone knows they will just drive us further into debt like they did the last 3 Republican Presidents they put in charge of the country.

Good luck, Pauly. You're doomed.

While working part time at a local manufacturing plant during college, earning extra money to donate to an orphanage, Paul Ryan was getting hassled by some of the shop toughs for not joining the union. Ryan decided that he would solve the problem by challenging the entire plant to an arm wrestling contest: If any man could best him, he would join the union.

The Local 519 decided they weren't going to take the chance of being bested by some college boy, so they put out the call state wide for any of their Brotherhood to come and help the cause. The men began lining up at Ryan's workstation at 5am, only to find that Ryan had been there for 2 hours already, working his stamp press. For 16 hours, Ryan continued working the press with his left hand, and pinning arms with his right. At 10:00am, someone from the college brought a video camera, and Ryan gave a 45 minute speech on how advanced neuro-net principals are shaping analysis of global-economic sociology, while still stamping and pinning. Turns out he had been teaching several of his classes for the past several weeks. At the end of his shift, having beaten every man that had shown up at least 3 times, Ryan asked for a glass of water and a Twix candy bar, which he promptly received, and told the gathered that he was going to run 10 miles to home and make love to his wife.

It was the President of Russia (not Putin, but the guy who preceded him). And his reasoning was that during an election year, the Republicans would try extra-hard to politicize and demonize anything he does, no matter how beneficial for the country it might be. And judging by their reaction to that remark, he was absolutely right.

If you've ever believed a politician was actually going to fix a budget problem by closing loopholes and eliminating fraud and waste without saying which fraud, waste, and loopholes or how they'd do it, don't vote. You're not helping.

Steps to an open dialogue leading to compromise:

1) State your position
2) Listen to the other guy's position and/or their complaints about your position
3) Work towards meeting the other guy in the middle.

There is no reason why we can't do step 1 before the election. We must, in fact. They are refusing to say because they have nothing, or they know what they have will turn a lot of people off.

I think we all know that not all conservatives are super-villains, but the fact remains that conservatives/the GOP keep letting these nut-jobs speak/represent them. But conservatism doesnt suck. At least its policies take into account unavoidable human nature and economic unintended consequences. Its sad so many people have been brainwashed to think liberalism is not only great for this country, but has been historically great. Empirical data proves otherwise, especially if you are part the working or lower classes. I understand the Wall St Mess, but if you think Democrats at the top of the food chain are not soul-suckers you're not paying attention. Granted, this should not be a reason to vote GOP. The fact is we have too many shiatty politicians and that is a direct result of having a ton of ignorant voters (and non-voters).
I get more wrapped up in local and state elections anyway, as they affect my life in a much more direct capacity (which sucks also, because North Jersey has a hammerlock on the state) and I actually have to compromise and vote for "conservative' Democrats when necessary.

This particular election is far from over, Romney's 47% comments be damned. The base that would be offended weren't voting for Romney anyway (according to todays WSJ, a clip of 80%+) and we didnt even start the debates yet.
Thats not a whine, my friend. Right now, Romney is probably a +180 dog (The Astros beat the Phils Sunday with a similar line).

Recognize that no matter how insane our system seems to be, its still the best in the world (or near it). So no matter the outcome, I wont be half-mad.

Try honesty.
Nah....I like lying. Because that's my specialty-lying on Fark forums to impress.
Is it the rain in the Pacific Northwest that makes libs up there so cranky?

Curious:
Krauthammer is smarter about what he says and where he says it. plus he doesn't have to stir the pot for ratings. all that said i've seen him say partisan stuff that anyone with more than room temperature IQ could dispute.

I can't blame him if he said it on that Washington Insider show. He gets bookended by liberals and he's bound to fall back on some easy quotes every now and again.

The liberals made him lie. Got it.

In my lifetime I have watched Republicans start wars (Iraq), receive bailouts(Savings and Loans), fund terrorists(Iran-Conta), and promote idiocy (Bachmann et al) and anti-science rhetoric (Akin).

Hopefully with my generation being tech savvy they educate themselves and understand what the conservative philosophy is all about, and its not what you are mentioning.

But good luck to you, respect your opinion, but hopefully my generation can put the stake in the heart of Republican style conservatism and a real party can emerge.

I dont want to go tit for tat with corruption and lying but I admit somewhere along the line parts of conservatism got lost in corporatism.

Part of conservatism also got lost in:

War Hawking
Attempting to establish a theocracy
Refusing to compromise and holding the country hostage to accomplish your goals

I disagree. You're assuming that the people who are not in Romney's 47% are automatically voting for Romney. They're not. At least I'm not.

Ryan seems to be quite willing to be specific about the tax cuts but not about the loopholes and exemptions to be closed. The game he is playing is quite obvious. He will get credit for cutting taxes while the Democrats will get blamed for closing loopholes and exemptions. Good plan if he can get away with it.

You mean like the capital gains aren't taxed at the same rates as income tax loophole?

Working for a living is for suckers. People who live off of capital gains are your betters. Your betters!

I'm still not sure why Ryan hitched himself to this campaign. I guess after being hidden down the back of the sofa by the party following his budget debacle he maybe figured any oxygen is good oxygen?

jayhawk88: Mugato: I'm noticing less and less pro-Romney/Ryan posters around here.

Noticing this on Facebook too from all my conservative relatives. Suddenly it doesn't seem to matter so much that Obama told some German politician that he should "wait until my second term" or that the UN is buying a bunch of bullets.

Pretty conservative district here in a swing state and the only Romney sign I've seen was one back during the primaries. They may just not be out yet but I've also only seen a couple of Romney bumper stickers.

Cletus C.: So Ryan says he wants a constructive dialogue with the opposition so a workable and passable plan can be implemented in a bipartisan way? This instead of empty and divisive political rhetoric?

You're so trusting.

That's adorable!

jayhawk88: Romney/Ryan: All right, we don't have any ideas, OK? We've got nothing. Happy?
Public: No. Amused, though.

If Romney just admitted that either a) he's has no farking clue what his plans are, and/or b) he specifically wants to shift all the wealth to the 1% and screw everyone else, at least I'd have a little respect for his honesty. I'd still never vote for him, but I'd respect him a bit.

This "elect me and I'll tell you my plans" garbage got old decades ago.
