It's not their history I care about.

It's their current platform of war war war, jesus jesus jesus, and millionaire-favoring fiscal irresponsibility with a side order of rape, and misogyny, and hatred of brown people that I object to.

I don't care if before I was born you healed lepers with your touch and sprinkled cash on my granparents' generation every time it rained, if you're sticking a knife in my side while you pick my pocket, all the while whispering that you think my brown-skinned girlfriend isn't human, I don't like you.

If you were not racist then minorities would vote for you. They are tuned into your racism far more than any republican apologist author.

today's republican party bears zero resemblance to the party of lincoln. ZEE-ROH.

it is now the party of two constituencies: the hyper-rich and ignorant white southern christians.

Because when *I* think of someone who'll risk it all for the right of minorities to stand with the majority as equals, I think of Southern Republicans.

Ah yes, the Republican Party: where the actions of 150 years ago matter, the distorted facts of 30 years ago matter, but what happened from 2000-2008 is totally irrelevant.

I don't necessarily believe that TPTB in the GOP are actually racist. However, I do believe they're willing to pander to the panicked, ignorant elements of our population who are in order to get their votes.

And after that, the Republicans literally invented a campaign plan called "The Southern Strategy":

Questioner: But the fact is, isn't it, that Reagan does get to the Wallace voter and to the racist side of the Wallace voter by doing away with legal services, by cutting down on food stamps?

Atwater: You start out in 1954 by saying, "Ni****, ni****, ni****." By 1968 you can't say "ni****" - that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me - because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "Ni****, ni****."

Herbert wrote in the same column, "The truth is that there was very little that was subconscious about the G.O.P.'s relentless appeal to racist whites. Tired of losing elections, it saw an opportunity to renew itself by opening its arms wide to white voters who could never forgive the Democratic Party for its support of civil rights and voting rights for blacks."

That doesn't necessarily apply to Romney or Republicans right now. But using Lincoln as evidence to the contrary is BS. There has a been a lot of political history since then.

FlashHarry: today's republican party bears zero resemblance to the party of lincoln. ZEE-ROH.

I disagree.

(1) The Republican party still has the strain of religious activism running through it. In Lincoln's time it concerned itself with freeing the slaves as part of a moral crusade; today it concerns itself with abortion and gay marriage.

(2) The Republican party was the party of industrialists & Robber Barons in the 1860s, who used the Federal Government to advance their own economic interests; today it's the party of corporations & Robber Barons who are using the Federal Government to advance their own economic interest.

Um...gee, this is awkward. How do I put this?

See, I don't think your great-great-great grandfather was racist. He fought to free the slaves. I don't think your great-grandfather was racist. He fought with African-Americans in WWI. I don't think your grandfather was racist. He fought with African-Americans in WWII. They were great Americans.

YOU, on the other hand, are a racist. I say that because you love a racist assbag like Rush and listen to him devotedly. I say that because you say 'you people' when you talk about any minorities. I say that because of your immigration policies in Arizona. I say that because, despite all of your pandering at RNC this year, if I had played 'drink every time you see a minority who's not on stage', I wouldn't even have gotten buzzed. If I had done the same at DNC, I would have died. In about 15 minutes.

It's ok, though. I don't think you're a bad person, just a racist. You can change. We all can. But the first step is admitting it, and as long as you keep staying in denial, I'll keep pointing it out.

Racist.

Good chart - what's important to notice is that the main factor here is GEOGRAPHY. Once you normalize for North and South, Democrats actually voted FOR the Civil Rights Act more than Republicans.

Maybe it's because you accuse Barack Obama of being muslim (like there is something wrong with that) and a Kenyan usurper.

Maybe it's having strict anti-immigration views.

Maybe it's your platform which is generally intolerant of African Americans and hispanics and their views.

Maybe it's people who throw peanuts at a black camerawoman at the RNC.

Maybe it's the overwhelming number of cops that vote Republican and who for lack of a better reason seem to overwhemingly profile brown people more than whites.

Maybe it's the fact that an overwhelming number of red states are in areas of the South that resisted the Civil Rights movement, or in places like Indiana where the KKK was founded.

Maybe it's the people who photoshop pictures of Obama as an African.

Maybe it's the voter ID laws that target minorities.

Maybe it's the illegal gerrymandering of districts in red states like Texas that target minorities.

Maybe it's because your view of welfare recipients never seems to go much beyond the idea that they are all lazy black people.

Or maybe it's simply because many of you are a bunch of f*cking racists.

correction - Indiana's KKK was just more politically powerful than any other state for a long time. It was started in Tennessee, which of course is a swing state ;)

Just more evidence that party trumps all for these people. They ignore the fact that the segregationists were the conservative ones. That slave owners were the conservative ones. The anti-suffragettes were the conservative ones. The side that is resisting change and clinging to the old way is, by definition, conservative.

I'm becoming convinced that Rick Santorum is right and they really are just stupid.

"Republicans and conservatives are now regularly smeared as racists. "

If today's Republicans and conservatives were like those people they like to claim to be like, then yes, it would be a smear. However, given that all those people in the past are long gone, today's Republicans and conservatives are often the people they claim not to be.

In other words, the smears of today's Republicans and conservatives being racist are not smears, they are facts. And there is no shortage of examples of this as of late including the GOP candidate blowing hard into the dog whistle as his closing line at his last speech before the GOP convention.

(Of course, not all Republicans and conservatives fall into this category, but enough do to put a really damaging spin on the Rep&Cons brand)

Because those were the last times the party cared about fighting racism. 50-60 years ago, and not only have they abandoned that side of the fight, they've joined the other side.

The GOP freed the slaves...in 1865. The areas of the country that now vote Republican went to war to defend that particular form of racism.
The GOP overturned Jim Crow laws...with the help of Northern Democrats, the Northern GOP passed the CRA. The Southern wings of both parties - those areas that now vote GOP - voted against.
The GOP fought for racial equality...while also fighting against it. (I could also say the same about Democrats or Jews or rich people or socialists or women or doctors or religious people, making this a useless claim.)

// all this is well-trod rhetorical territory
// and sadly, we'll have another of these threads next week when some other media-employed blogger complains that the media calls them racists
