We were having cable issue at that time anyway, so when it went black, we were ready to shrug and catch it again on a replay.

Then the credits came on.

We considered it well-played, knew there would be a shiatstorm.

What happened was David Chase gave himself an awesome insurance policy in case he needs to generate some money really fast all he has to do is pitch a Sopranos movie. And since the ending is totally open to interpretation, he can write whatever kind of story he wants based on what he feels like writing whether or not James Gandolfini is available.

Well, that's good, I guess. Opened up a couple of episodes for nonsensical dream sequences. Who wants to see violent confrontation in a gangster show?

Some people were asking about the Russian all the way up until the end. But since it was Paulie and Christopher chasing him and considering how their own storylines play out I dont think the Russian could just show up and get revenge on either one of them. I wont spoil the rest of the series for you if you are trying to stay in the dark about it. But once you see how things end up, the Russian storyline was kind of a dead end.

mechgreg: And since the ending is totally open to interpretation

Sure, but there are right and wrong interpretations. As David Chase said ""If you look at the final episode really carefully, it's all there."

I see that others have responded already, but I think that was a terrible oversight. They could have brought it back just for a laugh or a quick thrill. I think it was a great missed opportunity but oh well.

I'm gonna guess their fate starts with "w" and ends in "hacked".

/Thanks for the thought about spoilers, but at this point, it would be my own fault!

To guard against typecasting he should do a period piece next. Maybe a medieval drama where a feudal lord sends him out to shake down those lousy peasants who won't pay their taxes.

Maybe it was just a certain time in my life, but I can't ever remember a show I looked forward to more than The Sopranos. I never watched the first three seasons live, but caught up the summer before Season Four and was just enthralled with each and every episode thereafter.

It's easy to rip on the finale in hindsight, but at the time, it was unbelievably tense and exciting and if he was trying to create just an emotional connection of what it must be like to be Tony Soprano living every casual family moment in fear that you were about to die, it succeeded in spades. And if that isn't what he was going for, than who gives a crap ? He gave us six seasons of genius.

That and the plotline where they are selling guns to shady middle easterners. That one had lots of potential.

The single cast member who can actually act is doing just fine.

I loved the show and it was a terrific and brilliantly assembled ensemble. But boy what it must have taken to get those performances out of those people.
