This is another one. That one was in Munich.

An American World War II bomb left a huge crater in a pedestrian zone and two houses seriously damaged - but no-one injured - after experts conducted a controlled explosion

CONTROLLED?

Oh wait. We're talking Germans and explosives. That's pretty controlled, given the circumstances.

Yeah, because the British never dropped bombs back then.

I once went to Munich, and went to a church that essentially had to be rebuilt because of the RAF bombing attacks.

Chill. The German UXO teams are what you'd call "experts" at this, having 6 decades of organizational experience in an extremely Darwinian field and being, well, organized along German lines. If they say it's American, it's a good bet they can also tell you model, variant, manufacturing date and weather conditions the day it was dropped.

Interestingly, the Germans I met while living in Hamburg had something close to the same approach. "Our grandfathers went completely nuts and had to be slapped down. Sucks the cost was so high, but it was necessary. If you want to talk history, can we talk about what we made of our country after 1945, now?"

(Admittedly, the mass graves where entire city blocks were laid to rest did get to me. 10-year-olds perishing in firestorms kinda sucks, no matter how crazy their fathers went.)

Kind of like the full-time teams in France defuzing World War 1 ordnance. They know what they're looking at. (They'd better, since lots are gas shells.)

I think the most honest explanation I ever read was from Peter Cremer: "My country was in ruins, my friends were dead, and my youth was gone. We followed an evil man and we had no one other than ourselves to blame."

Speaking of UXO experts. These guys, along with the French "deminers," have balls of solid brass.

I have no problems with today's Germans. They left my country, due to the war, depopulated by a third, and helped us get enslaved by the Russians for 50 years afterwards, but I don't believe in the "sins of the fathers."
Berlin, Koln, and Bravaria are great places to visit.

Yeah....and then there's France's "Harvest of Steel" left over from WWI....still takes lives, and the Germans put a lot of it there. As a previous post said, "Sow the wind......"
