I fibbed a bit. Right now I am in the Philipines looking at places to outsource jobs. And most of the toilets here look fairly western. Next week is China and I will let you know.

I have seen that sort of thing in Malaysia and Korea but not nearly as filthy. They have them in Zanzabar too.

Lupine Chemist: I actually agree with him on this issue and he still comes off as a raging out of touch douche saying it.

My stance is that from the US POV it frees up resources that are currently being used stamping a metal plate in some factory to do something potentially more productive. The issue is there needs to be more assistance to help people that are displaced by this sort of movement find new work and help their families. I think outsourcing is better on the whole for the country and economy as it prevents legacy inefficiencies from lingering, but there are real losers at home when it happens and someone should be obligated to help them.

From the Chinese POV you cannot look at it with western preconceptions. The fact of the matter is the conditions are horrible but they are also a million times better than having to collectively farm every day. This is how the Chinese middle class is forming and it's not pretty. And the fact is unless Chinese factories can start producing things at world class quality (they will in some time, but that's still a ways away) they are going to have to compete on labor costs. And as harsh as it sounds and as repressive as the CCP is with regards to human rights, they do honestly seem to have the interests of the people in mind as far as Economic development goes.

I think it's a hard decision that cuts 55-45 in favor of outsourcing, but you really do have to accept that that 45% negative is there.

Eliminating our manufacturing base does not make us more effiicient.

It's one of those things where if just a few people do it, then they make out like bandits, but if everyone does it, the whole system collapses. I disagree with you about the 55-45.

America is right about tied for worlds largest manufacturer. It's just that it's much more high value-added goods. American manufacturing is strong and getting stronger, it`s just not as labor intensive. But that's an internal question within a country of how to ensure wealth distribution happens, which I am also for.

I have absolutely no doubt that Mitt Romney and others like him would LOVE it if the American people were as desperate for work as the Chinese women at that factory. None whatsoever. And since Reagan was elected, they've managed to drag us pretty far in that direction.

So, we got Daily KOS--a site notorious for being liberal--claiming there are factory workers in Illinois asking Romney to stop Bain from offshoring their jobs. The article links to a Salon article as a citation...that doesn't exist anymore.

While I'm inclined to believe that Romney ships/shipped jobs overseas, I absolutely HATE it when there's no good citation. Makes me wonder if there's more to this story than just what Daily KOS is claiming.

Never mind. They also cite Reuters, which actually has an article there.

Yes almost all toilets in public places are as posted there. The only western toilets you will find are in handicapped stalls or western establishments.

I live in the Philippines right now and I've never seen a squat toilet here, but then, this country is a wacky mix of cultures, none of which are what Americans think of as "Asian".

They do have squat toilets in the airport in Taipei, however.

ox45tallboy: That was actually one of the cleanest ones I found on the GIS.

That's a hell of a lot cleaner and nicer than some of the toilets I've used in Italy. In a lot of small towns there, all you get is a smelly hole in the piss-covered floor. If you're lucky, someone will have painted footprints so you have an idea of where to stand. Then you have to figure out how to drop trou in such a way that no part of your clothing touches the floor.

Irrelevant, but squat toilets are not a sign of squalor, they are the traditional form in much of the world and in fact medically much superior. people from those regions find seat toilets revolting and hard to use.

Of course in many places they are often disgustingly filthy and generally vile but thats another issue. Egypt, I mean wtf is wrong with you Egypt.

Also, those toilets may look primitive to Americans, but as I understand it, they're built that way because it's actually physically healthier for you to squat to do your business. Not that I've ever used one, but... just sayin'.

When I was back in my private equity days, we went to China to buy a factory there. It employed about 20,000 people. And they were almost all young women between the ages of about 18 and 22 or 23. They were saving for potentially becoming married.

And they work in these huge factories, they made various uh, small appliances. And uh, as we were walking through this facility, seeing them work, the number of hours they worked per day, the pittance they earned, living in dormitories with uh, with little bathrooms at the end of maybe 10, 10 room, rooms. And the rooms they have 12 girls per room.

Three bunk beds on top of each other. You've seen, you've seen them? (Oh...yeah, yeah!) And, and, and around this factory was a fence, a huge fence with barbed wire and guard towers. And, and, we said gosh! I can't believe that you, you know, keep these girls in! They said, no, no, no. This is to keep other people from coming in.

And I said, "No, no! This is great! I wish we'd thought of this back home!"

I'd actually be more disturbed if he DIDN'T make up the whole story. Do rich powerful Americans often visit factories surrounded by guard towers and barbed wire and think, huh, THIS is what we're missing in the USA! Cause that is terrifying to consider.

Be afraid.

A few months ago some Apple exec was giving an interview and talked about manufacturing iPhones in China. The anecdote he gave was that before the latest iPhone release there was a last minute design change to some component. They sent the change to their manufacturers, at something like 3am in China. The factory operators immediately woke up several thousand laborers in the company dorms, took them to their work benches with the new instructions and set them to making phones. Within a day or so they we're churning out thousands of phones a day.

The exec was thrilled with the speed and flexibility of the workforce and (IIRC) bemoaned that you just couldn't do that in the US.

To be fair, all I see there is Romney describing what he saw - it doesn't say he approved. The next part of the story could be that he was horrified at the conditions and immediately pulled out of the deal. Though I'd be pleasantly surprised if that was the case.

They want to make the American worker so desperate they will accept a lower standard of living, less pay, and no benefits.

Yep. Course, since my grandfather fought f--king hard, with his coworkers, to get those put many of those BASIC F--KING WORKER PROTECTION LAWS in place in the first place, to Mr. Romney, from the Land Where The Trees Are The Right Height

If I had money, I'd start a Super PAC right now and simply send postcards with Romney quotes on them to undecided or leaning Romney. The people who haven't really been paying much attention other than TV news at best.

Just quotes. Black and white, with a reference at the bottom. Single postcards, cheap postage. You have to at least glance at it before you toss it.

That'd be enough to throw over some undecideds, even if they're still kind of uncomfortable with Obama or just worried about the economy and half bought into the "Mitt is a Businessman!" BS. And it might demoralize those who were leaning Romney to not even bother going to the polls.
