Spent a few hours with Borderlands 2 last night. So far, it's similar enough to the first that it's instantly familiar, but different enough that it feels new. The devs also improved the menu system, which is great...Since it frankly sucked balls in the last game. A solid, fun game overall, but those inventory screens were murder.

More than antyhing, I'm glad to see Gearbox doing well. Randy Pitchford is a hell of a nice guy.

When the first Borderlands came out, they made it seem, at least to me, like you could "build" guns. I get that there are a lot of cool weapons available, but being able to stick together the parts that you like would be much more appealing. Also, I wish it had full online play available, it would be fun to play PvP.

I would do this for free, though the game would be a welcome addition.

i've been having a heck of a time with the steam match making services not working, but when it works its fantastic with 4 player co-op

Anyone else get a giant ad, then a black screen that won't go away?

Dammit, I wish they were doing something like that in my area, I'd totally do it. As is I'm going to have to wait for it to come down in price or for a Steam sale to hit before I pick it up. Just can't spare the $60 to buy it this month.

2012-09-19 03:20:50 PM
Steam worked like magic for me, had two 4 player rounds yesterday with Steam friends, got to level 11 with zero and 9 with the gunzerker. Both lots of fun!! Slightly disappointed that I didn't get to a high enough level/damage that I was exploding anybody yet, though...

2012-09-19 03:21:34 PM
And wait, are they letting you bungee jump for free, too? So two things for free? I would totally do that.

Did anybody else notice the difficulty is ramped up between 2 and 1? Every boss fight I'm getting 1-3 "Fight for your life!" situations.

I'm in the same boat. But it is giving me a reason to play through part 1.

I found the same thing. At least the first levels are much harder, and I was running out of ammo constantly. But I didn't get to play much yet.

/Gunzerker, I want a build that lets me never stop shooting.

Running out of ammo as gunzerker?? Just keep using your ability, it regens ammo for you! Like, even when just traversing terrain to get to your next destination, hit the 'F' key and build up some ammo!

That was one of the only complaints on the Kotaku review, and not really a complaint, just made it harder. They said the ammo is very lacking in some places. And if you decide to hike back to an ammo store, enemies will have usually respawned by that time, so you have to fight through them too.

I've noticed it too though, having to watch my shots and make sure they count.

The first Shield mini-boss (The Medic) was a nightmare. What me and the wife eventually did was stand on opposite ends of a room taking potshots for nearly half an hour. Two Zer0s even with different builds does not work well on bruisers.

I'm still annoyed at Borderlands because my save got corrupted on the last stretch of the Knoxx DLC and if I ever want to finish it I either need to sit down mod a save or I have to replay the whole friggin' game....

Oh yeah, compared to my 1st boss in BL1, Nine Toes was a breeze, cut to BL2, Flynt just destroyed me. I had to level up during the side quests to outmatch him.

The worst part...As a $30 impulse buy, priced about the same as games like "NASCAR Unleashed," I wouldn't have a problem recommending Borderlands 2 as a fun diversion. At twice that price, though, I think it's fair for players to demand the whole magilla - cutting-edge development, engrossing campaign gameplay, scads of downloadable content, a rich social media/community experience, sharing of loot and gear and online multiplayer modes that keep you and your friends coming back until the next version of the game comes out.

This guy actually is advocating a day-one DLC model...Fark him and everyone who looks like him.

I feel your pain. I inadvertently erased my save on my Xbox. Lvl 50 with the best weapons down the drain. I eventually went back, started anew, and got the lvl 11 or so. Don't know if I'll ever get much further now, tho.

The sniper rifles have been few and far between. Got one when I first started, had to keep using it until I made it to sanctuary. Every other weapon type dropped at least 3 times on my way there, but not a single sniper rifle!

I never got far in Borderlands - the initial "missions" of "go kill 5 of those things", or "go get me 10 of these things" just immediately turned me off. The environment was cool...but the quests were just so unimaginative that I got bored real damn quick.

Just to be clear - I'm over a hundred hours into Skyrim (Xbox), and just bought it for my PC to play it over with mods...so I'm not a attention-deficient 12-year-old.

Hehehe apparently the author already had to issue a statement:

Dear Community Members,
I know you're angry at me for what I wrote previously on this article. I didn't want to cause controversy on here at all. I just wanted to write a simple review about Borderlands. That being said, I do not take back what I said about Borderlands 2. I know you are all upset with me but Borderlands was NOT a good game and it definitely did not compare to Call of Duty or Halo in multiple ways, as I stated above. Call of Duty and Halo are going to contain much more rich multi-player abilities than Borderlands 2. Also, I believe the graphics on Call of Duty and Halo are much more detailed and accurate than in Borderlands 2. I was basically just writing my opinion on how I dislike Borderlands 2. It wasn't supposed to be against a community member or anything at all. Please stop writing on my YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. Also, please stop calling my work. Nobody deserves this much harassment because of his belief on a simple video game that wasn't up to standards. I appreciate the time you took to read this comment.

Thank you,

I had a lot of issues getting Borderlands 2 to run at first. First the .net framework loop got me, got around that after about an hour. Then when I launched it, I got the splash screen, hit play, got the loading screen, and it simply restarted my computer. After checking the forums and google, the only way to fix it was apparently updated the bios. Didn't want to do it, but once I realized I had dual bios I figured what the hell. Installed the new bios, restarted, then my PC would get to the windows splash screen and restart. Loaded up the laptop and hit google, finally figured out how to fix it, loaded up fine from there on out. But man, what a pain in the ass. So far I've actually spent more time trying to get it to work than playing.

/speaking of which...

I played the first one until my controller and the disc wore through, I picked this up yesterday morning before work.
I spent a few hours with it last night. My thoughts:

-AWESOME - NEW BORDERLANDS
-new menu system is confusing, why are they using so little screen real estate?
-why are the gun names nonsensical now? Before I could instantly kinda know what it was "shredder", "panacea", etc. Now we get 'funny' quips in place of the name. "this kitty's got TEETH, BOOYAKASHA". Ok so... what does that gun do? What category is it in? Why is my assault rifle called a rocket launcher? I really don't get it
-the graphics are more cartoony, which is a disappointment. I liked the graphic novel look of the first one. They're taking another step towards normal graphics, ugh

That being said, I still liked it a lot, and will continue playing the f*ck out of it.
Does anyone know if they still have class mods that regen ammo? I'm playing as Axton, and I really start to enjoy the game when ammo is no longer a concern (I find it is used as a crutch to make games harder)

I really didn't think Borderlands was a good game. It was, ultimately, really farking boring.

Any fun to be gleaned was either from later DLC or by having idiot friends around...but having idiot friends around can make nearly anything fun, so Borderlands doesn't get any points for that.

I actually agree with you on that one. The game was boring as hell if you didn't play co-op. My buddy chris said thats been fixed this time around with single player so im looking forward to getting it when I have the cash.

I liked the first one well enough. I'm not a big FPS player though. The last one I sat down with for any length of time was Half Life 2. I was more attracted to BL's RPG elements and the unique abilities and magic guns. It was like an FPS + WoW.

A couple of my buddies were pretty hardcore about it though. They picked up BL2 last night. I'll wait a month or two and snag a copy from one of them.

I played a demo of the first game and enjoyed it. Looks like a hell of alot of fun, but I could not get past the color scheme. Gives me a headache. If they didn't do it in that cell shaded format (or what ever it's called) I'd be in

Hm, think I'll wait for both Steam sale and reviews of XCom till I decide whether to get that or Borderlands 2. Still play Fallout Tactics, so a game in that vein has my interest.

Didn't play Borderlands.

Also, Call of Duty has sucked since CoD2 and Halo only had music going for it. I think the video game industry found its Armond White.

That was originally supposed to be a feature but it didn't work out in playtesting. At some point in the development cycle they realized that Borderlands is really about trying to find the perfect gun, so allowing players to craft one would have sucked the life out of the game.

Same hear. It seems like it would be in my wheelhouse but whatever the hook is for BL it never got me. I played a few hours and then let it gather dust. Might go back and try it another day but thanks to steam sales I am only out a few bucks.

XCom has given me a raging nerdboner.

Rock Paper Shotgun had an interesting series of interviews with the lead designer and he seemed to know what he was doing.

I imagine the base layout will end up being stupid and gimmicky, but since there are buttons to just jump straight to important aspects of the base, I'll get over it.

A few thoughts on that review, having only played BL1:

1. CoD and Halo games have single player modes?

2. I like the cartoony animation style, but I got really bored with the drab, washed out look. Totally person preference and not really something to knock the game for. If the graphics are unintentionally bad that is one thing, but to say that the game is bad because you prefer a different graphical theme is almost like saying you don't like a book because it is based in New York and you prefer L.A. as a setting. It's supposed to be goofy.

3. I would not trust that guy's review of one of my bowel movements, much less a game purchase. Please don't ever link to him so as to choke off all web traffic to his reviews.

What's interesting is that they actually didn't feel threatened by Xenonauts (an indie game trying to basically revitalize/make a modern remake of the old-school X-coms). They were, in fact, *really excited* by their existence, and really, really hoped they succeeded.

I never played the old-school X-Coms. I did grab them on steam, tried to play them... but, uh, the UI's, sort of...
I get the feeling UI designed was not very advanced in those days? "I don't even know what half of these buttons DO!" was the general feeling I got.

Loved th first Borderlands. Not liking this one as much after 2 hours of play. Might grow on me though...

one thing maybe someone knows... in the first game i ued the diamond pattern on my compass all the time to see where i needed to go for the objective. i dont see that oncreen now only a bar that seems to show my closeness to making the next level where the compass was. is there a setting or something to put that onscreen? right now i am always having to go back to the map and reroute myself.

i downloaded on playstation network so no users manual. when i get bck to a computer will see about downloading it. also, do i need some code to play online?

sorry for the n00b questions. i'm too old to figure this shiat out lol.
