FTFA:

Romney's comments in the recently released video clip from a May fundraiser implied that he has written off as certain Obama voters about half of the population whom he says pay no income tax. Gallup does not track voters who pay no income tax, so it is not possible to isolate these voters precisely. Still, government data suggest that those who are most likely to pay no income tax are those who have very low incomes and are the youngest and oldest segments of society. Recent Gallup Daily tracking data show Romney in fact has significant support among these segments: those with the lowest incomes, the young, the old, and the older voters who have low incomes.

Well, a lot of working class conservatives do consider themselves victims. And most of them have a real problem taking responsibility for their bad decisions.

They don't care. They think their 'situation' is temporary. They'll be rich soon enough.

That's one variation of why they still support the GOP. Another is:

We shouldn't have these programs. True, I'm on it, but I am only doing it because it is available. If it weren't, I wouldn't and we shouldn't have it.

The rare one I've heard is:

I'll never be rich because I'm not good enough. I don't support the system I use, and I support the people who despise me, but I do it because Jesus.

Here's how ridiculous Romney's statement was:

growlersoftware.com

WTF Indeed: Maybe because Mitt was talking about "Obama voters" not "poor people"

Nope.

Romney said: "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what," he went on to state, "These are people who pay no income tax."

2012-09-18 06:02:37 PM
Does anybody stop and wonder about the percentages of the comment? The whole "there is damn near a majority of the people who will vote for the president no matter what"? Isn't that an admission of defeat?

I mean, even if you took the exact percentages, and said 47% = Obama voters, that's means that there's a lot more who MIGHT vote for Obama, and all it would take is 3% of them to defeat him.

/yeah, I know the man says stupid shiat, but even he can do basic math

It doesn't matter, since none of those people make the connection that he was talking about them. To quote Frum:

When you ask white Americans to estimate the black population of the United States, the answer averages out at nearly 30%. Ask them to estimate the Hispanic population, and the answer averages out at 22%. So when a politician or a broadcaster talks about 47% in "dependency," the image that swims into many white voters' minds is not their mother in Florida, her Social Security untaxed, receiving Medicare benefits vastly greater than her lifetime tax contributions; it is not their uncle, laid off after 30 years and now too old to start over. No, the image that comes into mind is minorities on welfare.

Does matter, with only 3 or 4 percent moving, telling seniors and the working poor that you think your job is to not care about them isn't exactly winning any of those undecided voters. Aside from that, it depresses voter enthusiasm in his own base... getting people to turn out for a guy who doesn't care about them is gonna be really tough. He doesn't care about you, but you need to give up a couple hours to care about him... idk if that's the grassroots movement foundation he's looking for.

The only reason so few people pay income taxes is because Republicans have cut rates so many times in the last thirty years. The irony would be amusing if it weren't being presented so cynically. How do the Republicans, who have told us for years that taxes are oppression and that lower rates are the path to prosperity, have the balls to complain now that taxes are too low? They're halfway to their goal of eliminating taxes for everyone, they should be overjoyed.

I can't believe I'm about to do this, but I'm going to defend Romney here -- after a fashion.

Romney did not say that he "didn't care" about the 47% of Americans who don't have an income tax liability. What he said was that he's trying to win an election, and since the core of his economic plan is to cut people's income taxes even lower than they are today (as the Republican core often is), his point was that this message is unlikely to resonate with people who are not paying any income taxes to begin with.

You might say that this is a hair-splitting distinction, but it is a distinction.

Now, of course, Romney went on to say some spectacularly silly things about these 47% of American households (that they were victims, that they all had a sense of entitlement, etc.) He should -- and will -- be pilloried for saying these things. There is plenty of legitimate raw meat in this video that makes Governor Romney look more than a little bit out of touch. But I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that he "doesn't care" about 47% of the country on the basis of these video clips.

For the record, I'm an Obama supporter and have no intention of voting for Romney. But we've been listening to Republican shills take "you didn't built that" out of context for months now, and it seems a bit hypocritical to me for us to engage in the same kind of chicanery, even if it has been served up on a silver platter (as is the case with these ham-handed remarks).
