They cheated with a metal motor. I want a paper motor, damn it.

It would be faster to build a regular robot then program it to build the paper robot.

Yeah there was a shiatload of tediousness in that build, but cool result.

Anyone know resin casting reasonably well? Doing it again after a long time and need strategies for avoiding bubbles, but don't want to go to the extreme of vacuum pumps.

Because a robot's greatest enemy is always FIRE!

No cheating, no motor. Elastic band winding (I guess not technically paper, but neither is the string, glue, or pencil axles). The winding key is that spinning bit up by the robot's head.

Love it.

It really made me feel like the slow kid though.  I had a hard time building something with Legos without getting hungry and choking on the pretty plastic interlinkable candy.

Came here for Romneybot reference and left satisfied.

I use an orbital sander bolted to a piece of plywood as a vibration table to remove bubbles.

You have time to do that with a short pot life resin like alumilite?

Seriously, though. Very nice.

Undoubtedly, when the affordable ones get a whole lot more accurate. For now, it's still RTV molds and resin for the things I do.

What a neat project I wish I had the patience to do something like that.

One technique is to puncture a hole in the cup you mix the resin in, place a piece of tape over the hole. Mix the chemicals and peel the tape off to start pouring the bubbles cant escape with the fluid rushing out and you get a nice cast. I will see if I can find the youtube video of the process later.

I made a replacement tail light lens for a '67 VW Karmann-Ghia that way. It (the third try) came out perfect; you could even read "HELLA Made In Germany" on it. Unfortunately the red coloring I mixed with the resin faded quickly in the sun. In about a year it was significantly more clear than the original one that I used to make the mold.

I got this "Make You Own Paper Clock" book for my daughter. This reminds me that we need to get back to work on building it. All paper but some axles and string.

JESUS! I could NOT have the patience for that, I would have designed that in CAD as solid pieces and call it a day (especially with affordable 3d printing). Damned impressive making all that out of paper, especially the cogs and spiral gear set with sliding linkages. It really is amazing what can be done with paper if you form it right.

Vossiewolf: Are you japanese? I can only imagine that sort of culture (with oragami) could have patience to do that.

See all that stuff in there, Homer? That's why your robot never worked.

Yea. I mosty do flat-backed molds, though I do have some full molds. Pour and jiggle the mold to get the big bubbles out, put on the vibrating plate for about 30 seconds. If its a flat-backed mold, Ill put the backing piece on and weight it. If its a full mold, I might have to top it up a bit so that resin comes out of all the air holes. Takes a couple of times to get the timing right at first (especially with a new mold) but it goes pretty fast.

Ah thanks, that sounds promising, I'll give that a spin.

Thanks, I think I'll do that as well, I have an old 1/2 sheet pad sander sitting around. BTW I tried micromark's resin, nasty stuff, comes out pure white (which makes it hard to see the details for cleanup) and is really gummy, almost like styrene. Back to alumilite for me.

I didn't make the clock. But I do other kinds of intricate stuff:

I've been buying my stuff from Aero Marine

http://www.aeromarineproducts.com/

Good prices, speedy shipping. Their resin isnt as yellow as that casting, but its not stark white either.

It's that color because it's wood, not resin. I carved that from basswood. Going to check out aeromarine, thanks again.

Sand it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.
